Baseball / Geography Question

Here is my question: How come there are so many Dominican players but no Haitian players? They share the same island. It is like getting hundreds of MLB players from New Hampsire and Vermont (combined about the same area size as the Dominican Republic) but absolutely none from Massachusetts (about the same geographical area as Haiti).

I blame the French.

Edit: I meant to mention this earlier but did you know that if you did a search on MLB.com for the word "Dominican" - you come back with 246 matches? If you do a search fo "Haiti" or "Haitian" - you get zero matches.
