Loco Lowe

In a back and forth with Mark in the comments of one of today's posts - a thought occurred to me.

Derek Lowe has long reminded me of Bob Stanley who not only was a starter for the Red Sox but is also is the team's all-time leader in saves. Stanley's bread and butter was the sinkerball - just like Lowe. The comarisons could go on and on. They are both among the most charitable of Red Sox players and both are known to enjoy a beer (or eight). Bob Stanley's nickname was the Stanley Steamer (as far as I know - Bob is not from Cleveland and the name refers to his ability to steam through opponents).

How about the nickname of the "Lowe Locomotive" for Derek Lowe? The name works on many levels. When things are going good - Lowe's sinkerball (to use a Superman term) is more powerful than an speeding locomotive. When Lowe is doing poorly - we can just shorten the name to Loco Lowe or Lowe Loco (since many people attribute most of Lowe's problems to the "neck up").

Loco Lowe - it does have a certain ring to it.
