Miscellaneous Thoughts

Some various observations while I have my morning coffee...

Cool - Bush vs. Kerry bare knuckle boxing... Very quietly Baltimore is creeping up in the standings. Right now they are two games back in the AL East but they are tied with both the Red Sox and Yankees in the loss column... Why hasn't Comedy Central given Homestar Runner their own show yet? Strongbad would be bigger than Cartman from South Park... Red Sox fans are very concerned with Randy Johnson going to the Yankees but they should be equally worried about him winding up in California or Baltimore... David Ortiz leads the AL in extra base hits with 26. 62% of Ortizzle's hits have been for extra bases this season. Last season 56% of his hits went for extra bases... I know I said I was rooting for the Calgary Flames to win the Stanley Cup because they had the best playoff beards but if they play Tampa Bay I have to root for the Lightning because my roommate from college has season tickets and has brought me to several games (rooting for the Lightning is the least I can do)... The World Series of Poker starts this weekend and there hasn't been much change in the odds of who will win it (Phil Ivey is still the favorite at 12 to 1). The odds on Ben Affleck have come down to 450 to 1 which is only slightly worse than the odds on the Tampa Bay Devil Rays winning the World Series (400 to 1)... Have you read about the so called "Wedding party massacre"? Let me get this straight; ground troops approach a suspected terrorist safe house in the middle of the desert in the middle of the night (3:00 am), they come under fire and call in air support, the helicopters basically destroy the safe house and then the ground troops find weapons, foreign passports, satellite communications equipment and $2 million in Iraqi and Syrian money. So of course papers like the Boston Globe believe the wedding party story. You would think a week after publishing photos from a porn site the Globe would give more scrutiny to stories like this but I guess they'll never learn. BTW - I think it would have made for a much better story if the terrorists instead of saying it was a wedding party instead said it was a Bar Mitzvah... Here's the latest on Bill Simmons favorite football recruit... Seeing Phil Hellmuth get knocked out of the WSOP has to be one of the highlights of every year... Do you think Roger Clemens ever gave back that Hummer the Yankees gave him as a retirement present?... With the Yankees surging you hear less talk about how bad they're hitting as a team and less talk about whether Don Mattingly can cut it as a hitting coach (how can you not like Don Mattingly?). The Yankees are now 8th in OBP, 13th in MLB in runs scored, but just 26th in batting average (only the Mets, Reds, Devil Rays and Expos are worse)...
