Miscellaneous Thoughts

Some observations while I have my first cup of java...

I am amused at "news" articles about Andy Dick because the writers always seem unsure what to call him. So you may get "comedian-Andy Dick" or "actor-Andy Dick". I always though they should just use "annoying-Andy Dick" or more plainly "dick-Andy Dick." I can't think of anyone I have found more un-funny the past several years... Todd Van Poppel pitched 7 strong innings for the Reds last night to earn his 3rd win of the season. Many people view Van Poppel as a first round bust but of the 13 pitchers taken in the first round of the 1990 draft - only Alex Fernandez, Donovan Osborne, Steve Karsay and Mike Mussina have had better MLB success. Alex Fernandez was the first pitcher taken in 1990 but he hasn't pitched in MLB since 2000 while Van Poppel is still going strong (well going at least)... Christopher Walken news of the day... Seven shutout innings from Derek Lowe yesterday. I'll probably have more to say about that later today... You know for all the grief Pedro Martinez has taken this season - he is still within shouting distance of pitching's triple crown. Pedro is 13th in ERA, tied for 5th in wins and 1st in strikeouts. Fans in Boston have become spoiled... Fred McGriff hit his second HR of the season yesterday and now has 493 for his career (just 7 away from the magic 500). For those McGriff detractors out there - I would point out that Crime Dog's 2 HR are 2 more than what the Angels have gotten from 1st base this year... Eric Gagne has the same number of saves (16) as Jose Mesa. Who knew?... You have to think that San Diego is hating interleague play...
