He was born Adolphus Raymondus Vernon Agopsowicz but his stage name was John Vernon. You may better recall him as Dean Wormer from Animal House, or the mayor in the first Dirty Harry movie or maybe as Fletcher from The Outlaw Josie Wales.
Although I didn't realize it till today - my first contact with John Vernon came as the voice of Tony Stark in the old Iron Man cartoons. If I recall correctly, the theme song went something like:
Tony Stark makes you feelJohn Vernon was 72. RIP Iron Man
He's a cool exec with a heart of steel
But Iron Man all feet aflame
He fights and fights with repulser rays
Amazing armor - that's Iron Man
A blazing bomber - that's Iron Man
