Lapsed Catholic

I always found the term “lapsed Catholic” rather interesting. If a person was raised Protestant but they no longer go to church – they just say that they are not “religious”. “Lapsed Catholic” makes it sound like someone let their membership expire. “Oh I’m a member of the Catholic Church but my membership expired and I need to renew my dues.” Just sounds funny to me.
