Phony Vets for Truth

This "satire" by Scott Ott on the Phony Vets for Truth supporting Harry Reid in his tirade against Rush Limbaugh was pretty funny. However, it reminded me of a true situation that was even funnier than fiction.

In the 2004 election John Kerry's campaign tried to force Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney to accept a letter asking him to condemn the Swift Boat ads. Kerry's group was met by Darrell Crate, the head of the Massachusetts GOP, and a supposed Veterans Group called Veterans for Working Senators. Crate said he'd gladly accept the letter from Kerry's group if Kerry would accept the letter from his. The Veterans for Working Senators had a letter prepared which wanted to know why Kerry was AWOL as a Senator - never showing up for the job but still accepting the full salary. Crate's "phony veterans for truth" ruled the day as Kerry's folks knew that was a subject Kerry would rather not tackle (no show workers like Kerry aren't popular among the working folks known as voters).

I call them phony veterans for truth because there was no record of a group known as Veterans for Working Senators prior to the stunt by Crate or since.
