Linky Links

Stuff I found interesting or amusing and thought I'd share.

- Why do people buy into mythology of the Confederacy? Because our understanding of history is wrong!

- Dangerous animals. Holy crap - hippos are killers!

- Average cost of beer in cities around the world.

- I agree that George Bush should do the Daily Show before Jon Stewart departs. I think people would be surprised by how well Bush presents himself. Watch the Rumsfeld episode to see how Rummy owned the room because he was right and had the facts. Bush would do the same.

  1. The author of the WaPo article on the confederacy myths ironically reinforces the Buckley dictum he used to open the article. There's been a great whitewashing of history where primary sources from the day are expunged.

Here is one, a book written by a Union General. The history was fresh in everyone's mind and much more nuanced that the WaPo version.

  2. It's a tricky subject. On the one hand Robert E Lee was not a slave owner and did not believe in slavery. Post Civil War he also had a distinguished career as the head of Washington & Lee University. So I have no issues with a statue of him. The Confederate flag? As a historical artifact - no problem. But when it is raised in 1962 - almost a 100 years later as a protest against Civil Rights - then that's not right.
