Flotsam and Jetsam

Miscellaneous thoughts and observations.

I am mentally preparing myself for American hostages and increased loss of life in Afghanistan - where we may have to go back in because of the way the situation was mishandled. I also fully expect that the worst images will be shown by the foreign press as US media tries to downplay any potentially damaging images to the Biden Administration... Reminder that Jacqueline Bisset pretty much single-handedly created the Wet T-Shirt craze in the late 70's early 80's after her appearance in the movie The Deep... Pretty sure I'm not friends with anyone who disagrees with giving Afghan interpreters US citizenship. And also pretty sure I wouldn't want to know anyone who would disagree with that policy... Buying "carbon off-sets" to me always seemed like the modern equivalent of rich Northerners paying for replacements to fight for them in the Civil War. And just as hypocritical... I went to years of Catholic School and we were never told that Saint Peter - the Rock on which Jesus built his church - was married. Wonder why the Catholic Church conveniently forgot that aspect of Peter's life?...

  1. In regards to St. Peter, I guess it depends on the quality of your theology instructors. Mine personally covered the topic, from several angles in different years. In church history it was discussed factually, and in The Sacraments it was covered why Marriage is inconsistent with Holy Orders. Marriage pledges you to defend the health and welfare of a single person, placing their needs above those of any other. Holy Orders calls you to serve the entire Catholic Community with charity for all and favoritism toward none. The incompatibility is obvious. No one can simultaneously perpetually favor a wife and treat all equally.
Married protestant ministers (and worse, Catholic deacons) are the worst sort of proggy have cake/eat too assholes.

    1. The Bible disagrees with you on this topic. (And history has taught us that a man who does not desire a wife will often desire children instead.)

      1 Timothy 3
1This is a true saying, If a man desire the office of a bishop, he desireth a good work. 2A bishop then must be blameless, the husband of one wife, vigilant, sober, of good behaviour, given to hospitality, apt to teach; 3Not given to wine, no striker, not greedy of filthy lucre; but patient, not a brawler, not covetous; 4One that ruleth well his own house, having his children in subjection with all gravity; 5(For if a man know not how to rule his own house, how shall he take care of the church of God?) 6Not a novice, lest being lifted up with pride he fall into the condemnation of the devil. 7Moreover he must have a good report of them which are without; lest he fall into reproach and the snare of the devil.

  2. And while we are discussing Deacons, every one I've ever met is the kind of self aggrandizing prick who would wear an Army good Conduct medal, brag about having a blue checkmark, and Nominate himself for office.

  3. My Catholic upbringing was more concerned with attendance. Holy Days of Obligation not Holy Roman History or theology.

I've learned more reading on my own than I was ever taught in school - (where if you didn't pass Religion you didn't graduate).
