Flotsam and Jetsam

Miscellaneous thoughts and observations.

Red Sox fans love the fact that the Dodgers are on the hook for $15.75 million for Josh Beckett next season... If you want to understand how the Red Sox were built for success this season - you should read this piece by Peter Gammons... Men should not own either a fanny pack or Capri pants. This is non-negotiable... Rex Ryan needs to win 5 more games this season to beat the 5-year coaching record of Herm Edwards who went 39-41 in his time with the Jets... Because kids don't understand history - they probably think "the erection of the Berlin Wall" is something dirty... I still don't understand the logic of college athletics being tax exempt. I think if you removed the tax exempt status then the NCAA would crumble... A friend had a kale smoothie the other day. When he told me I thought he was making a euphemism for a green crap as in "I took a kale smoothie this morning"...

Top 5 - Players the Jets Could Have taken Instead of Mark Sanchez

Mark Sanchez went 5th overall in the first round of the 2009 NFL Draft. Here are 5 players they could have taken instead who went after Sanchez in the first round.

1. Josh Freeman - if the Jets really needed a QB then Freeman who went 17th has 10 more TD's and 6 fewer INT's.
2. Clay Matthews - a top pass rushing LB and perhaps the real pretty-boy drafted out of USC in the first round in 2009.
3. Percy Harvin - a threat to run or catch would have given the Jets offense multiple options
4. Michael Oher - OT whose Blind Side story if it ended in New York would have made for an even bigger movie box office (and besides Oher has been pretty damn good)
5. BJ Raji - a DT who could have anchored the Jets defense.

The draft that yielded Tom Brady will always be known for the player after player taken before Brady and the what ifs for each NFL team if only they took the wiry kid from Michigan. The 2009 draft for Jets fans will probably be known for who they could have taken instead of Mark Sanchez.

Jets QB Circus

The Jets spent another high draft pick on a QB - taking Geno Smith of West Virginia in the second round. The Jets now have six QB's on their roster - Smith, lame duck starter Mark Sanchez, Tim Tebow, David Garrard, Greg McElroy and Matt Sims. For a point of comparison - the Patriots roster has three QB's - Tom Brady, back-up Ryan Mallett and Mike Kafka from Northwestern.

Some want the Jets to cut Sanchez and take the $8 million plus cap hit. They argue that Geno Smith may be a raw rookie but at least he protects the football. These are the same people who neglect to mention that Tim Tebow is one of the best QB's in football at turnover ratios. I would also mention that every team in the NFL knew the Jets were going to take Smith in the second round and yet every team above them passed him over and no team behind them moved up to make sure they got him.

I will also add that Tebow was also much higher rated coming out of college. The Jets are a joke. And as a Patriots fan - I think the joke is pretty funny.

Flotsam and Jetsam

Miscellaneous thoughts and observations.

Love learning new words. Some of these I knew but others I will try to add to my vocabulary... Saw The Hobbit on opening night. Three things you should know: 1. the book is being broken into two movies which is OK because Tolkein packed a lot of action into that book, 2. the movie is close to 3 hours long (go to the bathroom before the movie!) and 3. some changes were made from the book - how you view these changes will affect how you feel about the movie... O Chemistree, O Chemistree... If you replace the word "ham" with the word "condoms" then Green Eggs and Ham becomes a very strange gay cruising book... Here's a geeky question that bothers me - if you poked out one of Wolverine's eyes would it grow back?... Here's a geeky joke to go with that geeky question: Two chemists walk into a bar - the first orders H2O, the second orders H2O too. The second chemists dies... As a reminder Rex Ryan needs to win the last game of the season to equal Herm Edwards 4-year record with the Jets. If anyone out there still thinks Ryan should keep his job - let that stat sink in...

Flotsam and Jetsam

Miscellaneous thoughts and observations.

I wonder what the updated Vegas odds are of Roger Clemens getting voted into the Hall of Fame. I remember during the summer it was 4-1 that he'd get in on the first ballot and 7-4 that he'd get in on the second ballot. The guy would obviously be a 100% lock without the steroids allegations. It will be interesting to watch... Tom Brady is operating at a level this season that few quarterbacks in history have reached yet he gets very little MVP recognition because we've come to expect this from Brady. Brady is simply unbelievable. Enjoy him while you can... Probably shouldn't write this but I can't be the only person who quietly suspects that film maker Ken Burns may secretly be a woman - can I?...  Bad management - not unions killed Hostess... Interesting stat from SI's Stewart Mandel; of Notre Dame's 12 wins - 9 came against bowl eligible teams. Alabama only had 5 such wins and Georgia just 4... Didn't realize this but Curt Schilling actually had a higher career WAR (76.9) than Jeff Bagwell (76.7). Not reading anything into that - just that it surprised me... The next fuck I give about the Jets "Fireman" Ed will be the first.

Mark Sanchez is the Assman

New York Jets meet Seinfeld. I really hope someone splices the video of Mark Sanchez getting almost knocked out by his own lineman's ass with the video of Kramer being told that "according to the State of New York - you are the Assman."

For good measure you could splice the video of Frank Costanza saying it was a "one-in-a-million shot doc" with the video of Rex Ryan explaining that Mark Sanchez getting knocked silly by an ass in the face was "a one-in-a zillion play."

Come to think of it - Fusilli Sanchez would be a good nickname for the Jets QB.

Mark Sanchez and Matt Leinart

A normal thinking person would probably argue that Mark Sanchez is not the answer for the Jets at QB and that the team has nothing to lose by giving the ball to Tim Tebow. Yet Rex Ryan and those in charge of the NYJ don't seem to be normal thinking people. Too stubborn? Too stupid? Both?

I can't help but keep thinking that Mark Sanchez is no different than fellow USC alumni Matt Leinart except Sanchez was drafted by a team that was determined to sink or swim with their number 1 draft pick while Leinart was drafted by a team run by normal thinking people. Seriously - I bet Matt Leinart wakes up every day thinking "why couldn't I have been drafted by the Jets."

One thing that Tim Tebow doesn't do is turn the ball over. That alone could have meant the difference in a couple of close games for the Jets this season. But instead of going with what will give them the best chance to win - the Jets are sticking with their bonus baby QB. As a Patriots fan - that's just fine with me.

Oh as an aside - I think its funny that that the folks at Pro-Football-Reference.com list Tim Tebow as a tight end (for 2012 season).

Flotsam and Jetsam

Miscellaneous thoughts and observations.

Just a reminder but Rex Ryan needs to go 7-9 this season just to equal the 4-year record the Jets had under Herm Edwards. With today's loss the NYJ are now 3-6. Rex Ryan - worse than Herm Edwards?... 55 things you might not know about the US armed services... With the Red Sox signing David Ross - it will be interesting to see whee Jarrod Saltalamacchia gets traded to. I think Salty could really rake in the NL. Most speculation has him going to the Mets... It would be interesting to compare the records of the schools kids transferred to vs Penn State's record. The grass is not always greened... One side effect of Obama being re-elected - 4 more years of incessant gold commercials on Fox News...

Flotsam and Jetsam

Miscellaneous thoughts and observations.

The over/under for wins for the Jets this season is 8.5. I am almost convinced that Mark Sanchez will get the team to 4-7 record before getting replaced by Tim Tebow who will then peel off 4 straight wins so the team is 8-7 on the last Sunday of the season. Something like that is bound to happen... Real men of Genius -Joe Biden. What was true 3-years ago is still true today... Am I the only one is is curious what Martin Scorsese would have done if Siri told him that it was Rick in that commercial?... Things you learn from the Internet: "Mitt Romney and Paul Ryan" is an anagram for "My ultimate Ayn Rand porn"... Growing up when cars had chrome bumpers we used to ride behind on cars like this all the time. We called it "skitching" or "bumper riding"... Just started watching Lost. Yeah - I'm hooked.

Linky Links

Stuff I found interesting and thoughts I'd share.

Game of Thrones casts Ciaran Hinds as Mance Rayder (the King Beyond the Wall). Ciaran Hinds is probably best known for playing Caesar in the HBO series Rome. I'm a little torn by this casting since I like Hinds but he's nothing like what I had pictured in my mind after reading the books.

Heh heh - Karl Rove endorses Joe Biden for Democratic VP

The economics of bank robberies. Bottom line - you'd probably make out better being a taxi cab driver.

Heh heh - sports books taking action on when Tim Tebow will replace Mark Sanchez as starting QB.

Flotsam and Jetsam

Miscellaneous thoughts and observations.

I'm a fan of Title IX and the payoff the American public is seeing from all the women's medals at the Olympics makes me very happy... Very cool story of how Mitt Romney became a Texas' couple's landlord... I've mentioned this before but Red Ryan has to go 7-9 this year to equal Herm Edwards' record in Herms first 4 seasons as Jets coach (35-25). I don't think Rex can do it... Incredible panoramic views from the Mars probe Opportunity - did I mention it was incredible?...  The over / under for wins for the New York Jets is 8.5. Looks like the bookmakers aren't sure if Rex is any better than Herm too...

Flotsam and Jetsam

Miscellaneous thoughts and observations.

File this under "One of these things is not like the other" - of the four remaining teams in the NBA playoffs - three are coached by men who are considered in the top 4 of NBA coaches. The other team is the Heat... Gates to White House - STFU... Kevin Garnett likes to talk about taking a lot of pride in his "craft." That's why it disappoints me that nobody ever describes him as "crafty". Or even a "crafty vet"... Interesting - resampling the Wisconsin exit polls show that Mitt Romney is either tied or ahead of Barack Obama... Some time in July I plan to strap an old Christmas tree to the roof of my car, dress up in a Santa suit and drive around City Hall 50-times. I'll have someone video the reaction of onlookers... Spooky or cool science? Gravity hills... This joke would be funny if it wasn't so sad that its true. "You can always tell a guy who masturbates a lot by looking at his hands. If you look closely - you'll see a wedding ring"... Incredible photograph - the sun, Venus, the Taj Mahal and a bird... Just a reminder - Rex Ryan will have to go 7-9 to equal Herm Edwards record in his first 4 years as Jets coach (35-25). There's a good chance Ryan doesn't do it... This was just awesome. Hitler finds out that Scott Walker won the Wisconsin recall election... The show Unlocking the Universe is one of the best science shows ever made... Who knew? Tim Burton's first choice to play title role in movie Beetlejuice was Sammy Davis Jr...

Flotsam and Jetsam

Miscellaneous thoughts and observations.

It should be noted that Mike Aviles who ends up being the starting shortstop for one of baseball's richest teams was basically given up for nothing by the Royals. To get Aviles the Red Sox gave up Kendal Volz (flotsam) and  Yamaico Navarro (jetsam)...  Heh heh - the most accurate Jets passer... Could a guy who owns a landscaping business also be called a geostrategist?... All the talk about Etch-a-sketch reminds me of the Emerson quote, "A foolish consistency is the hobgoblin of little minds, adored by little statesmen and philosophers and divines"...  15 Bizarre Portraits of Nude Politicians. I thought the JFK assassination was tastefully done... Last night the Boston Bruins honored team Captain Zdeno Chara who recently played his 1,000th game. Chara reminds me of what could have been if Gord Kluzak had healthy knees. Kluzak may have been (slightly) shorter but he was actually much more talented than Chara (which is not a knock on Chara just a reminder of how great Kluzak could have been)... Taking the phrase "a man's home is his castle" literally... If anyone snarks at you about Mitt Romney and "car elevators" remind that person that Mitt is mega rich and that his wife Ann has MS... Do you have an extra $35-70,000 laying around? The 1959 Masters Green Jacket is for sale... If Rick Santorum was elected President his first act would be to outlaw folk music in Catholic Churches. Acoustic guitars have no place near the altar in Santorum's America... Finally - a product that is just begging for a Ben Roethlisberger endorsement. Just begging for it... The have been a number of articles recently about the debate of the Red Sox using Daniel Bard as a starter or whether he should stay in the bullpen. If the article fails to mention Justin Masterson then the article was either lazy or biased towards Bard going back to the bullpen (looking at you Ken Rosenthal)... Wow - Matt Bush does not seem like a very good human being... I think a TV show called Rick Santorum - Vatican Spy would be awesome. You could have a West Wing meets Archer meets Get Smart type mash-up. Wouldn't you watch something like that?...

Top 5 - Reasons the Jets Traded for Tim Tebow

Here are the Top 5 possible reasons the New York Jets traded for Tim Tebow.

1. Mark Sanchez really isn't that talented but nobody wants to admit it cause he's so damn good looking.
2. PSL sales baby! PSL sales!
3. Tony Sparano and Rex Ryan are both big fans of the Wildcat package
4. Buddy Ryan always told son Rex that not getting Doug Flutie to start over Steve Beuerlein when Buddy was head coach in Arizona was biggest mistake of career. Rex didn't want to make same mistake.
5. The Jets were afraid the Patriots were making a move for Tim Tebow and did not want to get out-smarted by Bill Belichick again.

Jets and Patriots - the Difference in a Nutshell

Yesterday was very instructive when it comes to showing the difference between how the New York Jets are run and how the New England Patriots are run.

Early in the day the Jets announced that they had traded for Tim Tebow but the problem was they never read Tim Tebow's contract and were unaware that they would owe $5 million as part of the deal. This caused a snag. While this financial detail was worked out the bungle allowed renewed speculation about Tebow to Jacksonville and renewed derision about the Jets being more of a circus than football team. The funny thing is even though the Patriots weren't involved in the deal - they still had a better understanding of the financial ramifications of the deal than the Jets since Josh McDaniels was in Denver when Tebow's contract was negotiated and signed.

Speaking of contracts - while the Tebow on-again off-again circus was going on in New York the New England Patriots had their own QB contract issue going on as the Patriots renegotiated Tom Brady's contract to free up $7.2 million in cap space. This renegotiation was done quietly and without any fanfare. It can be argued that this extra cap space and the roster depth it will help add to the 2012 team will have a bigger impact than any wildcat package Tebow will add to the Jets offense.

The two moves by the two franchises were very instructive in illustrating how things are done by the Patriots versus how things are done by the Jets.

Whither Tim Tebow?

"Who will rid me of this troublesome QB?" John "Henry II" Elway
Supposedly now that Peyton Manning is in hand - the Denver Broncos will trade Tim Tebow possibly as early as this afternoon. Speculation is ripe throughout the Intertubes about where he will end up. Jacksonville? That would seem the natural marketing fit yet the football people there prefer Blaine Gabbert which I don't understand. Sure Gabbert has a slightly higher completion percentage but he throws many more interceptions than Tebow. Miami? Don't know about you but I'd rather have Tebow than Matt Moore.

There's a school of thought that Tebow could work as back-up for an established QB like an Aaron Rogers in Green Bay, maybe a Drew Brees in New Orleans or Tom Brady in New England. Green Bay just lost their backup QB Matt Flynn who signed with Seattle so there seems to be a slot open there. I honestly couldn't tell you who is the backup QB in New Orleans but if Tim Tebow got traded there then everyone would know who the backup was. New England has perhaps the best depth at QB of any team in the NFL. Tom Brady is a God, Brian Hoyer could probably start for half the teams in the league and Ryan Mallett is a cannon-armed diamond in the rough. That said - how about a trade that would send Ochocinco to the Broncos for Tim Tebow? That would solve a problem for both teams. If I'm Bill Belichick I definitely make that offer. Just for the salary cap space it would be worth it (Chad Ochocinco costs them $3 million while Tebow would just be $1 million).

One of the more intriguing rumors is the Jets being interested in Tebow. I wonder if that is the offshoot of all the speculation that the Patriots are interested? How funny would that be if the Jets get goaded into a move just out of fear that Belichick was somehow outmaneuvering them? I would actually like to see Tebow in New York but not with the Jets. How ironic would it be if Tebow ends up as Eli Manning's backup with the Giants? I think that would be great on a cosmic karma scale.

Don't sleep on the very real possibility that the Broncos announce today that they are not trading Tebow but are releasing him instead. They could spin it that they owe it to Tim after everything he did for the team last year to let him decide what team would be best for him to sign with. This would eliminate the embarrassing situation of having to settle for a 5th or 7th round pick for a guy who was your starting QB last year.

If Tebow is released then a whole new set of opportunities open up. How come nobody has mentioned the CFL? Tebow in Canada would be the biggest thing since Doug Flutie played north of the border. It would give Tebow the chance to start at QB and prove that he can do the job just as Flutie had to go to America's Hat to show he could be an NFL QB.  You know the CFL is salivating just at the thought of Tebow.

I still think the Flutie comparison is apt. Looking back - how many NFL teams would have been better off with Flutie than the prototypical NFL QB's they tried while Flutie was up in Canada? When all is said and done - people may think the same thing about Tim Tebow.

So what's God's will for Tim Tebow? We might find out today.

Flotsam and Jetsam

Miscellaneous thoughts and observations.

I understand that it was Woody Johnson's granddaughter who was really behind the Jets extending the contract of Mark Sanchez. She thinks he's really cute. There is also a clause in the extension that he has to take her to the prom... Probably going to hell for this - the Passive Aggression of the Christ... I will never even consider buying Geico insurance until they get rid of that stupid cavemen... Strange - I don't think the local ponds ever really froze over enough for ice skating this winter. Maybe a few of the smaller ones for a week at most. Can't ever remember a winter like that... It should be noted that Keith Olbermann really stopped being taken seriously by anyone right after Ben Affleck did his spot on impression of him on SNL. Olbermann has pretty much been a joke since... I know that Ron Paul supporters wouldn't necessarily vote for Mitt Romney even if Ron Paul told them to do so but that doesn't hold true for Ron Paul's delegates. Going into yesterday's voting Romney had 404 delegates while all other had just 337. If you added Ron Paul's total to Romney's - you'd have a truly commanding lead. This should not be forgotten. Ron Paul is Romney's insurance in case Newt or Santorum does drop out of the race.

Flotsam and Jetsam

Miscellaneous thoughts and observations.

I have to wonder if after the debacle that was the Ryan Madson non-deal with the Phillies - if Scott Boras cannot get Prince Fielder a megadeal - will he try to use a big deal for Jacoby Ellsbury to try and restore some of his lost luster? As a Red Sox fan - I hope so... I don't care how good a Rick Reilly piece is or how highly recommended it comes - I've wasted too many hours of my life reading his mailed in pieces to ever take the chance of letting him cheat me out of any more slices of my lifetime...  Cool - old picture of Mitt Romney and Muhammad Ali... I wonder if Tim Tebow is going to wear wool socks and sandals when he comes out to New England. He would certainly fit the Jesus Boots profile... If Andrew Bynum was a baseball player - he'd be JD Drew... Heh heh - is Mitt Romney's large penis the new Bababooey?... Jets fans talking about getting Peyton Manning smells a lot like Penn State fans talking about getting Nick Saban to replace Joe Paterno... When did people switch from calling the NFL Playoffs "the playoffs" to calling it "the tournament"? Was there a memo?... Best pole dance move ever!!... Every time I see Newt Gingrich speak - I keep expecting a bad lip-reading bit to break out... Taking a trip on the Orient Express is definitely on my bucket list... Farts - an under appreciated threat to astronauts (listing this under science).
