Saturday Flotsam and Jetsam

Have a new miscellaneous thoughts and observations post up on Substack.

Joe Biden being morally questionable and mean was known throughout his career yet he was still picked to be Obama's running mate and then when he was getting trounced by other Democrats on the debate stage the party managed things to either force the other candidates out or got them to drop out in his favor. Now they get him to drop out if the race against his will in favor of a completely unqualified Kamala Harris who nobody voted for. Paying attention yet? Hard to stay silence in such a situation.

MAHA

"I was completely misinformed about what MAGA is... The coming together of these two groups over the past weeks - has been really glorious. And they gave us the name MAHA, Make America Healthy Again. That was always the vision of this unity movement, this desire to heal the divide, even though these are just two pockets... they're two very powerful pockets, and to find common ground has been one of the most motivating, optimistic things I've seen in recent political time." - Nicole Shanahan

Reportedly it was announced that Kamala Harris agreed to debate Donald Trump on September 10th. My burning question was how Joe Biden and Kamala Harris planned to commemorate that fateful day of September 11th 2001 and those who lost their lives that day. Now I'm wondering if they'll be commiserating over losing a debate the night before.

As a Patriots fan I'm not sure how I feel about Jacoby Brissett maybe being hurt and Drake Maye having to start the season as the starting QB. Like the idea of bringing him along slowly but clearly he's the more talented guy. If they do have to do that - I hope the O-line doesn't get Maye killed.

The Liberation of Paris and the Ritz Bar

[From the Archives] I'm a big fan of Ernest Hemingway and if you were to mention to me the liberation of Paris in WWII (August 25, 1944) - the first thing I would think of is Hemingway "liberating" the bar at the Ritz Hotel that very same day.

Today is the anniversary of that day. I was curious - so I Googled "Hemingway liberate Ritz bar" and I came across an article from the San Francisco Chronicle.

The article is an interesting read - chock full of anecdotes about Hemingway and his "liberation" of the Ritz bar. However, the paragraph that really caught my attention was this:
The renowned author annoyed his colleagues in the working press. They were both awed by his fame and furious that he was playing soldier, in violation of all the standing rules about correspondents staying out of the war, even though the reporters were very much a part of the war effort.
I have no trouble picturing Hemingway having a bit of a mid-life crisis (he was 45 at the time) and playing soldier would have been his equivalent of buying a new Corvette. What struck me as odd was the description of the "working press" who in their own way "were very much a part of the war effort."

Can you imagine the press being described that way today? The American press could not be described as part of the war effort today. The press today serves their own self interests and not the public good. Stories are slanted to match a certain bias and agendas are almost completely transparent (even though the press likes to crow about being a neutral purveyor of the simple truth - (yeah as long as "the truth" matches the agenda). I wonder how the Hemingway of 1944 would view the press of today.

I'm pretty sure I know the answer.

Hard not to think of all the speakers at this week's DNC convention (including Kamala Harris) as actors playing a role and sending out a scripted message. Also hard not to think of the Bible quote of what good would it do a person to gain the world (or in this case the White House) and lose one's soul. Didn't watch Kamala Harris' speech at the DNC last night. Have you ever thought I have to watch Kamala's speech because she may say something profound? Curious to see how the DNC's ratings from last night stack up against the NFL pre-season game between the Colts and Bengals on Amazon Prime though. The Hunt for Red October

"It was people like these who had built the American Dream, and people like these who were needed to maintain it." - Tom Clancy The Hunt for Red October on the defecting Russian officers.

It was a post from CDR Salamander that got me thinking about Tom Clancy and The Hunt for Red October. It has been so long that I read a Clancy novel or seen the movie that I forgot which I did first - read the book of see the movie. I do remember seeing the movie when it first came out with my brother and we loved it. It holds up to the point that its hard not to picture Captain Marko Ramius anyone other Sean Connery whether you read the book or see the movie.

There were many differences between the two. The book was more detailed with the same basic plot but various differences. There was no US President in the movie or Ritter at the CIA while the role of Judge Moore was reduced to just a miniscule appearance in the movie now.

The dialog was also better in the movie. This is no surprise since Sean Connery only took the role because it was promised that the gun toting, cigar chomping John Milius would write Connery's big speech to the crew. Guessing Milius punched up the rest of the script too. He is, of course, uncredited. Hollywood seems to want to erase any memory of the man who directed Conan (giving Arnold his first big role) and Red Dawn.

The ending in the book is different than the movie but you can't hep but notice in neither case were the Americans the cause of Russian sailors' deaths. There was no blood on their hands.

Now to re-watch the move sometime.

Admit that I'm not watching the DNC convention live (I didn't watch the RNC convention live either). But I do have to wonder if those in charge of messaging there have pivoted from "price controls" or "vibes" to "electing Harris/Walz is like elected Joe Biden to a second term?" The DNC convention in Chicago begins tonight and it promises to have plenty of "moments." Not a Republican consultant but if I were I would suggest that Trump, Vance, and the rest take the week off and just let Kamala and other Democrats speak. There will be plenty of "what did they just say?" and "WTF?" moments to go along with all the footage of mostly peaceful protests. Think people will contrast how well the RNC convention went off on their own.

Donald Trump Announces 20 Core Principles

Those are the first 10. Here are the second 10. Are there any you disagree with? I have a quibble with 8 because if Israel's Iron Dome works so well there - why not import it here? (Via)

The Donald and Elon

Elon Musk had a conversation with Donald Trump last night on X. Musk says the "interview" was viewed by 1 billion people and many are saying this marks the end of corporate media. None of the conversation was scripted and you can see how leaders act and are able to think about issues with having to rely on scripted answers off a teleprompter. Have to admit that I admire both of these guys.

I would say that Elon Musk buying Twitter and promising free speech was beginning of the end of corporate media trying to force a message upon people. Tucker Carlson having a "show" exclusively on X was the second step. Letting people see and hear for themselves was the beginning of "red pilling" many.

Trump during the interview admits that he didn't hire the best people at first in 2016 but will the second time around. I have to say this is largely because he hired people recommended by Mike Pence last time and Pence has been replaced. So have all those people who had their own agendas. Big difference now.

I endorse this idea 100%!
