Friday Flotsam and Jetsam

Have a new miscellaneous thoughts and observations post up on Substack.

Thought it might be helpful to share my thoughts on being a paid subscriber on Substack and paid websites in general. I follow many talented writers on Substack but am only a paid subscriber for a few. It's not that I don't appreciate their talents and want to reward their efforts. I do (rust me I understand the work and dedication needed to constantly be churning out posts) but I do not want Substack or my online life to be money-losing propositions. This is why I generally only sign on as a paid subscriber once someone becomes a paid subscriber for me. At the same time - I do not want to charge for my offerings but I do accept paid subscriptions. This is why you also don't see me linking to any sites behind a paywall.

Hope that helps - and after all that please Subscribe, hit the Like button or share the Link. Thanks - it really is appreciated!

About Face

"Still, to me it came second in importance to what I considered the most significant thing I did at the Pentagon, which was a study of U.S. friendly fire casualties in the war and my tour with Slam told me anything, it was that the U.S. Army was its own worst enemy in Vietnam."

"Some changes were implemented immediately and some took a little longer, our recommendation that the Colt .45 pistol be eliminated and replaced (having caused since WW I, more friendly casualties than enemy) probably took the longest, at some eighteen years."

"But the main problem of friendly fire casualties - unrealistic, over supervised training -was never resolved, and of the some 58,000 American who died in Vietnam, on the basis of our calculations, between 8,700 and 11,600 of them shouldn't have."

This was perhaps the most shocking thing I learned about the war. A study David Hackworth took part in showed between 15-20% of the casualties were caused by friendly fire

"...old blood-and-guts leadership was neither needed nor desired by an Army that now placed management and executive skills well above those essential to inspire men or turn around an army on the ropes, even in the middle of a war In 1967-68, Grant, Teddy Roosevelt, Patton, Gavin, Ridgeway, and Van Fleet wouldn't have stood a chance."

David Hackworth at the Pentagon:

"...judging by the unmarked 'due date' form on the front of each book, not one of these French after-action reports had ever been checked out. Neither had Modern Warfare, the insurgency treatise of one of my renegade mentors, French colonel Roger Trinquier, available in English since 1964."

Pride goeth before a fall. And the Army certainly fell in Vietnam. We never learned.

- Enos Kanter Freedom is taking no prisoners.

- We are still "We the People." It is important not just to talk in terms of "we" instead of "them" but also to think that way too.

- Is anyone surprised at the governments actions regarding censorship at this point?

Tuesday Flotsam and Jetsam

Have a new miscellaneous thoughts and observations post up on Substack.

It is fair to stress that the would be assassin did not get off a single shot because of Donald Trump's "protection." While this does show an improvement in effectiveness in the Secret Service it also reminds people that some out there are trying to kill Trump and the DNC seems OK with that. It also brings up the question of if this crew was trained and if no longer comprised of DEI hires.

Have to admire a child's ability to just fall asleep when they're tired. Look back at a kid in their car seat on a long drive - and they're asleep. Or anywhere for that matter. Yet adults often will struggle to stay awake. In class, at work, church, anywhere. We should be more kid-like.

Happy Friday the 13th to those who celebrate. Accidently sent out this morning's daily quotes as "Saturday's Daily Quotes." Could blame this as mentally trying to avoid Friday the 13th (like how there's no 13th floor on many elevators) but really think it was just a lack of coffee.

Weapons of Math Destruction

"The root of the trouble, as with so many other WMD's, is the modeler's choice of objectives. The Model is optimized for for efficiency and profitability, not for justice or the good of the 'team.' This is, of course, the nature of capitalism. For companies, revenue is like oxygen."

Makes sense but keep in mind donations and getting elected are the oxygen that politicians live by.

"While Facebook may feel like a modern town square, the company determines, according to their own interests, what we see and learn on its social network... By tweaking its algorithm and molding the news we see, can Facebook game the political system."

"And Facebook is not the only company to weld it. Other publicly held corporations, including Google, Apple, Microsoft, and Amazon and cell phone providers like Verizon and AT&T, and have information of much of humanity."

"George W. Bush, after all, won in 2000 by a margin of 537 votes in Florida. The activity of a single Facebook algorithm on Election Day, it's clear, could not only change the balance of Congress but also decide the Presidency."

Cathy O'Neil's Weapons of Math Destruction came out in 2016. You can't say she didn't try to warn us.

Thursday Flotsam and Jetsam

Have a new miscellaneous thoughts and observations post up on Substack.

It's reported that 67 million people watched the Presidential debate on Tuesday. between Donald Trump and Kamala Harris. That's up from the 51 million who reportedly watched the Trump-Joe Biden debate. My question is how many of these additional viewers were independent or undecided voters and how many were tuning in for the car wreck effect?

Have a new miscellaneous thoughts and observations post up on Substack.

Watched the debate last night and was surprised that even though Kamala Harris was clearly nervous at the beginning and failed to answer the first question that Donald Trump did not call her on either. More surprised that today is 9/11 and the commemorations and public remembrances of the day are muted at best. This is tough to accept for those who lived through that day 23 years ago.

Weapons of Math Destruction

"Publicists for a Judd Apatow movie, for example, could target males from age eighteen to twenty-eight in the fifty richest zip codes, perhaps zeroing in on those who have clicked or 'liked' Apatow's hit movie Trainwreck, have mentioned him on Twitter, or are friends with someone who has."

"But for many direct marketers, when they're operating on the Internet or through the mail, a 1% response rate is the stuff of dreams. After all, they're working with huge numbers. One percent of the US population is more than three million people."

Interesting look at how algorithms have become a part of our daily lives.

Monday Flotsam and Jetsam

Have a new miscellaneous thoughts and observations post up on Substack.

We got the financial crisis in 2008 in large part because investors came to rely on ratings from analysis who received the bulk of their revenue from the very mortgage companies they were supposed to rate. Likewise today's corporate media receives the bulk of their revenue from the Big Pharma firms they are supposed to report on honestly.

House Speaker Mike Lee has attached the Save Act onto the September spending bill meaning the Senate either has to agree that only US citizens can vote in November's elections or the government faces a shutdown. Weapons of Math Destruction

"Like gods, these mathematical models are opaque, their workings invisible to all but the highest priests in their domain: mathematicians and computer scientists. Their verdicts, even when wrong or hurtful, were beyond dispute or appeal. And they tended to punish the poor and oppressed in our society, while making the rich richer.

I came up with the name for these harmful kinds of models: Weapons of Math Destruction, or WMPD's for short." - Cathy O'Neil
