Clint Eastwood

Today is Clint's birthday - he turns 95 today. Here are what I consider his Top 5 movies.

1. Outlaw Josey Wales
2. The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly
3. Dirty Harry
4. Fistful of Dollars
5. (tie) Kelly's Heroes (tie) Unforgiven

Where Eagles Dare almost made the list but Eastwood really is a supporting character in that. Many consider Unforgiven his best movie but I placed it further down the list solely based on the number of times I rewatched it. Really liked Grand Torino but the ones I picked were classics. Also liked The Eiger Sanction but the book was better. The Dirty Harry films (after the original) didn't make the list because that character became cartoonish as it went along (just glad the role didn't go to Frank Sinatra - that would have been a completely different franchise).

He last directed a movie last year begging the question of if he's finally retired from films?

- VDH: Democrats and their DEI albatross.

- How big homebuilders and and private equity made American cities unaffordable (with a focus on Dallas-Fort Worth). Agree with the premise of how rule changes slanted the playing field towards Wall Street and big builders but think the factors of who is moving into these growing cities (blue staters used to paying inflated home prices with myriad regulation obstacles) and the shirking amount of available land in the cities (God isn't making any new land) should be taken into account.

Still believe that President Trump supports the Big Beautiful Bill because he wants the Trump tax cuts and no taxes on tips or overtime pay to become law. Think he'll try to implement the DOGE recommended spending cuts through a recission bill sent to Congress which is now reported to be coming as soon as next Monday. Woe to any politician that votes against that since it then that vote becomes the centerpiece of a campaign against them.

Wonder if the support of crypto and stable coins is a subtle strategy to discretely "end the fed." Or at least greatly reduce the power and influence of the Federal Reserve. Missed the original Friday news dump that Joe Biden has "aggressive" colon cancer that has spread to his bones. Though in one sense in combination with the release of the Hur interview tapes it does make Joe Biden appear to most to be an old man with dementia now suffering with terminal cancer. On the other hand I can't stop thinking about how the White House doctor could miss evidence of either - his dementia or his cancer. He had to be part of the coverup keeping a puppet in office and he definitely broke his oath to first do no harm.

We are only a little over 100 days into the new Trump Administration but are we already at the point where Donald Trump can feel he laid out his agenda (much of it via Executive Orders) and now just go on a world tour giving speeches and signing deals? Meanwhile back at home members of his Administration are taking care of business. This week it was RFK Jr. testifying to Congress and laying out the MAHA agenda and Border Czar Tom Holman on CNN dismantling the press and AOC. Next week it could easily be JD Vance, Tulsi Gabbard, Scott Bessent, Marco Rubio, Pete Hesgeth, and others  taking the spotlight. Meanwhile Trump just glories in a world tour. My concern is that this may be too much too fast.

Godel, Escher, Bach

Some thoughts and questions while reading the book:

Douglas Hofstadter writes in Godel, Escher, Bach, "Do words and thoughts follow formal rules, or do they not? That problem is the problem of the book." That also seems to be the very crux of a working AI system - getting words, numbers, and algorithms to follow rules.

GEB writes that, "Mathematicians (and more recently linguists, philosophers, and some others) are the only users of formal systems, and they invariably have an interpretation in mind for the formal systems which they use and publish." That "some others" were clearly AI programmers in hindsight.

Did Godel, Escher, Bach predict blockchain in a way? It talks about steps to a formal system being linked in an ironclad way - just as blockchain establishes ownership in an ironclad way. Does this mean that blockchain was a precursor to AI or did they develop in parallel?

Did the book predict AI? It writes about written symbols being translated to algorithms of typographical rules including all the Internet and the very rules of physics. Are AI hallucinations inclusions of non-theorems in the AI system? Is that how we get black founding fathers? Is DEI itself a non-theorem?

Enjoying the book but it is challenging.

Richard Feynman

Today would have been Richard Feynman's 107th birthday. There was a certain good feeling about reading Godel, Escher, Bach while thinking of him. This was of course a physics Nobel Prize winner who took a year off to study biology while at Cal Tech and almost solved the riddle of the DNA double helix before Watson and Crick did - and he would have too if his year "off" didn't run out.

Feynman was notoriously famous for working on problems like the structure of DNA and then just putting it aside in a file. His file cabinet is said to be chock full of such half-finished problems. I have long thought that a great use for AI would be to put this amazing computing power to work to solve these "files" for the benefit of mankind.

As always I recommend the book Surely You're Joking Mr. Feynman in his honor.

I would also recommend the essay What Impossible Meant to Feynman. Often when I learn something new I'd find myself exclaiming "Impossible!"

Godel, Escher, Bach

Just started the book Godel, Escher, Bach by Douglas Hofstadter. A book which has long sat on my books to read pile but honestly I was a bit intimidated by it.

GEB is nominally a book about a mathematician, an artist, and a musician but as the author writes in the 20-year anniversary edition, "In a word GEB is a very personal attempt to say how it is that animate beings can come out of inanimate matter." Or to the point, "I have tried to weave an Eternal Golden Braid out of these three strands: Godel, Escher, Bach."

The book is structured in an unusual way: as counterpoint between Dialogues and Chapters. Math is hard enough but this structure tends to lessen the burden. I'm resigned to not fully understanding the math in my first reading. The book is essentially about "Strange Loops" with perhaps the most pressing today being can intelligent behavior be programmed? The author puts forth that this seeming contradiction is no contradiction at all. I guess we'll see.

The book has been called the bible of artificial intelligence since it first came out who's to argue.

Pysics and Economics

The physics for large things like galaxies is different than the physics for the tiniest quarks. That much is known and accepted. However, the holy grail for physicists is a unifying theory that would unite both the gigantic and the microscopic.

Likewise, economics has been divided into the study of the large (Macroeconomics) and the personal (Microeconomics). Yet you never seem to read or hear about any economists working on a unifying theory of economics. This seems odd to me. Like such a theory is not a priority. Makes me wonder if it is because economic decisions are made by people who aren't always rational or because economics isn't really a science?
