You know that's the kind of food for thought thing that is capable of grabbing you by the scruff of the neck. Of course you will start out saying, 'wait, there was this fiendishly complex thing that worked perfectly and then you think about it and go, well, it's true it started out as a whole bunch of simple things that were added together and kept working. Just think about the bleeding edges on the USS Ford. I don't know if they got all the magnetic elevators working yet or not and it would take some serious footwork to convince me that the magnetic launch system really does work half as well as steam.
Good point - I think the only working complete systems that work without problems are combinations of simple systems that evolve or simple systems that evolved.
