The impression is that Tesla builds all their own components themselves but they rely on others for their chipsets. Case in point is the new giant Samsung fab in Texas that will make Tesla's next generation U16 chips. TSMC makes the U15 which just went into production while Samsung makes the U14 which is currently in use. Having all the major components made in America is a big deal.

I wonder if there is something like the Office of Net Assessment that looks at things like this and posits, 'how many of X can I build using the components that I can get from Y.' It's good to have a lot more Y INCONUS.
ReplyDeleteI think the supply chain problems that were laid bare during Covid made re-shoring all strategic goods. The chips that drive the cars and other products of Tesla are obviously strategic to them. Allies change but your country doesn't.
