The More Things Change
From the book John Marshall: Definer of a Nation by Jean Edward Smith:
On the surface, the Federalists appeared to be in good shape in 1799. They held the presidency and both houses of Congress, and their majority in the House of Representatives had increased from six to twenty... In reality, however, the party was badly split between the High Federalists, mainly from north of the Delaware, and the moderates from the south. The High Federalists despised [John] Adams while the moderates were steadfast in their support of the president.
Today the Republicans have Donald Trump as President and hold both houses of Congress. But the party is split between "classical" Republicans and MAGA Trump supporters. I just hope the Republican Party doesn't go the same way as the Federalsts.

In very unsurprising news New York fired coach Tom Thibodeau even though the Knicks just lost in the Eastern Conference finals. This reminds me of the Celtics firing Bill Fitch even though they won a championship under him. This New York team doesn't have close to the level of talent Boston had back then and I'd look for the Knicks to regress next season. Admit I have a soft spot for Thibodeau because he was an assistant coach under Doc Rivers and he was credited with installing the defense that netted the Celtics the 2008 championship.

The NBA Finals start Thursday with the Oklahoma City Thunder a huge (-$670) favorite over the Indiana Pacers (+$490). While the Stanley Cup NHL Finals start tomorrow with a fairly even rematch of last year's final - this time with the Edmonton Oilers (-$126) a slight favorite over the Florida Panthers (-$104). The favorites probably win in both series but would you really be surprised by any outcome? Even a Pacers victory?

Where Eagles Dare almost made the list but Eastwood really is a supporting character in that. Many consider Unforgiven his best movie but I placed it further down the list solely based on the number of times I rewatched it. Really liked Grand Torino but the ones I picked were classics. Also liked The Eiger Sanction but the book was better. The Dirty Harry films (after the original) didn't make the list because that character became cartoonish as it went along (just glad the role didn't go to Frank Sinatra - that would have been a completely different franchise).
He last directed a movie last year begging the question of if he's finally retired from films?

Agree with the premise of how rule changes slanted the playing field towards Wall Street and big builders but think the factors of who is moving into these growing cities (blue staters used to paying inflated home prices with myriad regulation obstacles) and the shirking amount of available land in the cities (God isn't making any new land) should be taken into account.
- Nellie Orr, DOJ official's wife, may have perjured herself in Russia Hoax testimony to Congress. This story isn't going away and Nellie and Bruce Orr may be going to jail.
- Atlantic hurricane preseason 2025. All opinion and no data seems to be the climate change arguments in a nutshell.

Still believe that President Trump supports the Big Beautiful Bill because he wants the Trump tax cuts and no taxes on tips or overtime pay to become law. Think he'll try to implement the DOGE recommended spending cuts through a recission bill sent to Congress which is now reported to be coming as soon as next Monday. Woe to any politician that votes against that since it then that vote becomes the centerpiece of a campaign against them.

So this week marked the two year anniversary of me suffering a stroke that required me to be hospitalized for 3 weeks. I feel mostly recovered though my balance and speech are a little off. I do take it as a step forward that I didn't even remember the anniversary but was reminded of it but something else. Life is precious - don't take it for granted!

Missed the original Friday news dump that Joe Biden has "aggressive" colon cancer that has spread to his bones. Though in one sense in combination with the release of the Hur interview tapes it does make Joe Biden appear to most to be an old man with dementia now suffering with terminal cancer. On the other hand I can't stop thinking about how the White House doctor could miss evidence of either - his dementia or his cancer. He had to be part of the coverup keeping a puppet in office and he definitely broke his oath to first do no harm.

We are only a little over 100 days into the new Trump Administration but are we already at the point where Donald Trump can feel he laid out his agenda (much of it via Executive Orders) and now just go on a world tour giving speeches and signing deals? Meanwhile back at home members of his Administration are taking care of business. This week it was RFK Jr. testifying to Congress and laying out the MAHA agenda and Border Czar Tom Holman on CNN dismantling the press and AOC. Next week it could easily be JD Vance, Tulsi Gabbard, Scott Bessent, Marco Rubio, Pete Hesgeth, and others taking the spotlight. Meanwhile Trump just glories in a world tour. My concern is that this may be too much too fast.
