Paid $4.15 per gallon of gas yesterday. This was already down $.30 from what I paid on Monday and I'm guessing next week it will be back down under $4 a gallon. When it is all said and done what the American people really care about is how any particular policy effects their family budget. As Bill Clinton put it "It's the economy stupid."

Soldiers in Jetpacks

The above video has been circulating for a number of years. But were you aware that way back in October of 1961 at Fort Bragg at what is now the John F. Kennedy Special Warfare School a demonstration was held showing a soldier with a rocket on his back crossing the water to land on the other side?

Not to mention the opening scene from the 1965 James Bond thriller Thunderball which showed Bond escaping in a jetpack.

We've been promised the ubiquity of jetpacks for a long time now.

There's a saying in sports that its not really a rivalry if only one side wins all the time. That's what comes to mind when I hear some asking if Iran won the peace deal. The US was basically bombing at will, controlled the air and the seas, the Iranian atomic program was halted, terrorism around the globe was wiped out, and the regime neutered. This was akin to the Black Knight saying "OK we'll call it a draw."

The Best and the Brightest

The Vietminh did much to get rid of the colonial French from Vietnam after WW II while the politicians in the south did just the opposite. Many fought on the side of the French or profited from the war to expel them. Was it any surprise we would have an issue with "hearts and minds" when we appeared for all purposes to just be taking the place of France and installing our own politicians?

Under President Eisenhower when Dienbienphu fell to the Vietminh - bombing by US forces would rightly have been seen as an act of war. And Eisenhower rightly did not take the bait. President Kennedy opened that door a crack and slowly it swung wide open.

Those in power when the French again took over after WW II knew America should not get involved militarily. At best they'd be on the side of a colonial power when we were the poster child for anti-colonialism and the costs were likely to be more along the lines of the Philippines insurrection from 1899 to 1913 than the Korean conflict. Besides Americans were emotionally exhausted from both WW II and Korea.

By the time President Kennedy was elected - Americans were more rested, China had been "lost" to the Communists, and the US was now an acknowledged Super Power. Plus we were willing to believe in illusions. To paraphrase Richard Feynman, "The easiest person to fool is yourself." David Halberstam's The Best and the Brightest tells the story of how America fooled ourselves into the Vietnam war.

Dense history but worth the time.

This Sunday is Father's Day so don't be surprised if you see a lot of dad's getting a jump on any yard work that needs to be done and for golf tee times to fill up pretty quickly. They know that the kids will insist they take it easy on Sunday with no work and to just do what they want. What many want is to play golf but they also know that lawn ain't going to cut itself.

President Trump is on his way to France for the G7 summit. On the Air Force One flight think it's a given that he'll be asked more questions about the wars in Iran and Ukraine than about world economies but what's the odds he also faces more questions about the Obamas or the SpaceX IPO than the actual reason for the trip?

The Killer Angels

"To be a good soldier you must love the army. But to be a good officer you must be willing to order the death of the thing you love. That is... a very hard thing to do. No other profession requires it. This is one reason why there are so very few good officers. Although there are many good men." - General Robert E. Lee

Yesterday was President Trump's 80th birthday and you have to think he had quite a day. A peace deal was reached with Iran and the night saw the UFC Freedom 250 event at the White House. You have to think the timing of that event was not coincidental.

Tonight is game 5 of the NBA Finals in San Antonio and the Knicks have the chance to win their first championship since 1973. Have the feeling the Spurs (and maybe the NBA) won't let that happen which would set up a potential ratings bonanza game 6 in NY. Just saying.

Filling the Ocean

Isaac Newton once said that what we know is a drop but what we don't know is an ocean. He's right of course but that doesn't mean we shouldn't try in our own small way to fill that ocean.

That - in part - is what I try to do with trying to absorb some of the lessons from the quotes I examine and try to take to heart each day. And also with my thoughts on what's going on in the world and what they may mean. Not to mention the reading I try to do each day.

In the movie The Shootist John Wayne buys a newspaper the day he learns he has terminal cancer and is intent of reading that paper cover to cover so he knows what happened on that particular day. I don't have terminal cancer (thank God) but death does come for all of us - memento mori. Shouldn't we use the time allotted to us in our short span and try to fill the ocean of what we don't know but at the same time enjoy the fact we are alive and appreciate the present moment?

The two big stories this morning are the Knicks amazing comeback to win game 3 of the NBA Finals and the war in Iran devolving to just the US taking target practice. That the NBA Finals seems the top story shows just how little regard the average American is giving to Iran's military at this point.

The Killer Angels

"'This is a different kind of army. If you look at history you'll see men fight for pay, or women, or some other kind of loot. They fight for land, or because a king makes them, or just because they like killing. But we're here for something new. I don't... this hasn't happened much in the history of the world. We're an army going out to set other men free.'" - Col. Joshua Chamberlain

Even with the Spurs beating the Knicks last night the big story of the day was Brendan Sorsby being ruled eligible for Texas Tech by a local Lubbock District Court despite being banned for life by the NCAA for gambling. Lessons of History

It was well reported that The Guns of August by Barbara Tuchman was one of JFK's favorite books. But it was also reported in David Halberstam's The Best and the Brightest that JFK may have sent those 18,000 "advisors" to Vietnam as a direct result of the bullying treatment he received from Nikita Khrushchev in Vienna. It's as if he didn't lean anything from Tuchman's book.

"Those who cannot remember the past are doomed to repeat it." - George Santayana

I've also long held that much of the tragedy of WW I was because military leaders failed to learn from the lessons of the American Civil War where trench warfare had it's seeds.

Tonight is game 3 of the NBA Finals and the first finals game at MSG since 1999. Look for any celebrity from New York or any who have shows on ABC or Disney to attend and get plenty of air time. Halberstam Upper Level History

Just a thought but you could make a whole year of college upper level modern history classes from some of the books of David Halberstam. For example:

History 301: From World War II to Vietnam. The class would be based on Halberstam's book The Fifties and his book The Coldest Winter: America and the Korean War.

History 302: The start of the Vietnam War to Japan taking over the US auto market. This class would be based on Halberstam's The Best and Brightest and his book The Reckoning

These two classes would span the better part of four decades of US history over a single college year. There would be plenty of historical details to review and Halberstam is considered liberal royalty by many - so that should ease the courses being adopted by various universities. Halberstam has become more controversial as the years go by so all of the items from the books should give plenty of subjects and differing takes for historical papers.

So let it be written so let it be done.

President Trump has been emptying the strategic oil reserve trying to keep the price of gas at the pump at a reasonable level. He's also been been selling that oil at top of the market prices because of the war in Iran. If that war ends and the price of oil drops - will he then start refilling the oil reserve by buying at much lower prices? Did the US government just make a huge windfall? The art of the oil deal?
