The Senate failed to pass the Save Act requiring voter ID even though it nominally passed along strict party lines 52-48. All the Yea's were Republican and all the No's were Democrats. For some reason 60-votes were needed. Not sure if this is what they intended but they are turning many people into single issue voters.

The Tipping Point
"Coca-Cola pad $35 million for the rights to sponsor the 1992 Olympics, but despite a huge advertising push, only about 12% of TV viewers realized that they were the official soft drink and another 5% thought that Pepsi was the real sponsor."
The reason I bring this up is an explanation isn't given for what would be considered a good run-rate for TV viewers and much of the book espouses small changes leading to big results. Is this a choose your own adventure going on here? Or a making facts seem to mean what you want them to mean? The Home Depot meanwhile explains that becoming Olympic sponsors was one of the best marketing decisions the company ever made. Both companies are based in Atlanta - why include one fact but not the other?
Let me first explain that I did enjoy the book but I've learned to take Gladwell's writing with a huge grain of salt. The Tipping Point is basically about how epidemics reach a "tipping point" and then "burst" as if they were a bubble or something. Like the tulip bub bubble or the dot com bubble. Except "the tipping point" is a fresh idea that could be pitched to book publishes. A great story and a best seller waiting to happen.
Also read his book The Bomber Mafia and though I also found that enjoyable and thought it had some good history but couldn't dismiss the fact that Gladwell couldn't hide his bias and a person unfamiliar with the facts could be swayed into the wrong impression about Cutis LeMay and the bombing of Japan.
Gladwell has the habit of cherry picking his facts to match the premise of his books. Know that going in and enjoy the ride.

Not in favor of him receiving any taxpayer supported security either. The Red Sox won the first game of a double-header to run their win streak to 15-games and tie the franchise record. But then they lost the second game to end the streak. College Football Thoughts

Welcome to the Monkey House
Recently read Kurt Vonnegut's collection of 1950's era short stories Welcome to the Monkey House and for the most part enjoyed it. There were one or two stories that may not have held up so well but for the most part worth the read.
Let me get this out right away but not sure if naming a book after what can be boiled down to frankly a rape story would get a green light by publishers today but the book is a collection of stories that reflect the thinking and fears of a by gone era. It is interesting to look at the thinking and fears from 70+ years ago. But again - don't think the rape story as title of the collection would be approved today.
As an aside long have noticed how Kurt Vonnegut consistently used unique words or phrase and defined them in his own style. Or by his unique definitions. Here were two such examples from the book:
- Drupelets - "the pulpy little knobs that compose the outside of the raspberry"
- Euphoria - "a sense of buoyancy and well-being"
Was thinking of creating a collection of Vonnegut's dictionary of unique words and phrases but see it's already been done.

Localism would become sectionalism; the special interest of where a man lived would come to seem petty and disruptive."
Of course the biggest vice was slavery which would in time lead to the Civil War.

Spain won the World Cup yesterday 1-0 in extra time (if we call it soccer we should also call it overtime) despite some heroic goal keeping from Argentina. Many had the feeling that if it remained 0-0 that Argentina would win in a shootout.

Salt: A World History
"The city of Cincinnati was built into a major commercial center with salt from Kanawha and pigs from Ohio, Kentucky, and Indiana. By the late 1830's, Cincinnati was packing almost one third of all western American hogs...
...Kanawha salt makers could still undersell their competitors, not only because the density of their brine but because their workers were slaves.
Kanawha was in the state of Virginia, which had a huge slave-based tobacco industry that was slowly declining. The large tobacco plantations had more slaves than they could use, and the owners saw an economic opportunity in renting these people to Kanawha salt producers. According to the 1810 census, Kanawha county had 352 slaves, but by 1850, 3,140 slaves lived in the county, mostly assigned to saltworks...
Plantation slaves did not want to be leased to saltworks, and they would sometimes escape while beig taken west. The slaves knew that, like the salt, they were only a short journey to Ohio, which was a free state...
...By the 1840's, Syracuse, not Kanawha, became the leading supplier of salt in the Midwest."

College Football Thoughts
Some offseason thoughts and observations that were NOT sponsored by Monster Energy drinks.

Anal Ice Cubes and the Difference Between Men and Women
I read a study once where the experts explained that putting ice cubes up the rectums of unconscious people has no physiological benefit and can even lead to seizures and stroke. Of course I laughed at such a silly study. And the more I thought about it – the funnier I thought it was.
After thinking about it for a while I came to the unmistakable conclusion that men were completely responsible for such a thing. In order for the study to be done in the first place people must have been putting ice cubes up the butts of unconscious people. Who would do such a thing? Men! A woman would never see an unconscious person and think – “Instead of calling an ambulance for help I think I will jam a large ice cube up the ass to see if that wakes the person up.” Say that to a guy and the chances are his response would be, “What the heck – give it a shot.”
And who would design and OK the spending for such a dumb study? Men! Do you think they told the test subjects what the study was all about? “OK we are going to knock you unconscious and then place ice cubes of different sizes up your rectum.” How would you like to be the test subject that ended up having a stroke because you needed the $50 the experiment paid?
