Jalen Goes for Win 71

Donald Trump

This is the final battle. With you at my side, we will demolish the deep state. We will expel the war mongers from our government. We will drive out the globalists.” - Donald Trump

Every pundit I've seen has said both the trial and verdict in NYC will backfire badly against Joe Biden and the DNC. Even one of his main competitors RFK Jr. has said it was a disgrace and a black mark on American justice. And every legal scholar I've seen said this verdict will surely be overturned.

So why did they do this? Simply because it was a hail Mary and the Biden campaign felt they have no other path but all they did was guarantee a Trump win in November. Plus they have most certainly guaranteed that Joe Biden will be remembered as both worst and most corrupt President in US history.

"Don't underestimate Joe's ability to fuck things up." - Barack Obama

Happy 84th Birthday to Clint Eastwood

Today is Clint's birthday (he turns 94 today - can you believe that?). Here are what I consider his Top 5 movies.

1. Unforgiven
2. The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly
3. Dirty Harry
4. Fistful of Dollars
5. (tie) Kelly's Heroes (tie) Where Eagles Dare (tie) Outlaw Josey Wales

Really liked Grand Torino but the ones I picked were classics. Also liked The Eiger Sanction but the book was better. The other Dirty Harry films didn't make the list because that character became cartoonish as it went along. Used to have The Outlaw Josey Wales as my number one but Sondra Locke's presence really detracts from the film.

Hard to believe that Bill Walton is really gone. One of my favorite Bill Walton stories is of how the Grateful Dead came to Boston and his teammates for that great 1986 team all asked him if he could get them in. Recently went to a graduation ceremony where non-invited "guests" were protesting the "genocide in Gaza." Have a theory that divorce has become much more prevalent in our society simply because people are living longer. In older generations even unhappy couples stayed together because they figured they only had a little time left anyway - why go through the hassle of a divorce? Tarzan of the Apes

Recently was re-reading Edgar Rice Burroughs' Tarzan of the Apes. I used the past tense because I quit reading the book halfway though. Loved the book and the series when I was a kid but I was afraid to read the book would be racist to today's audience and it was. Not to the degree I feared but definitely racist and misogynist too.

It is a great story and a great character. I simply had an itch I needed to scratch but now that itch has been scratched and probably won't be picking that book up again.

Redford and Newman

A woman walks into a tattoo parlor and asks "Are you good at doing tattoos of celebrities?

"The guy says, "Sure, I'm pretty good. What do you want done?"

The lady says, "I'd like a portrait of Robert Redford on the inside of my right thigh, and a portrait of Paul Newman on the inside of my left thigh."

"No problem," says the artist. "Take your pants off and get up on the table."

After a couple of hours, he finishes, and she sits up and examines the tattoos.

"That doesn't look like either of them!" she complains.

"Sure it does," he says, "and I'll prove it to you." With that, he runs out of the shop and grabs the first man off the street he can find, who happens to be the town drunk.

"Well, what do you think?" the woman asks the drunk, spreading her legs. "Do you know who these men are?"

The drunk studies the tattoos for a couple of minutes and says. "Well, I'm not too sure who the other two are, but the guy in the middle is definitely Willie Nelson!"

Grant by Ron Chernow

"The caricature of Lee as elegant and faultless whereas Grant was a clumsy butcher misses the point that Grant had the much harder task: he had to whittle down the Confederate army and smash it irrevocably, whereas Lee needed only to inflict massive pain on the northern army and stay in the fight for another day."

"The major victories of Sherman, Sheridan, and Thomas in 1864-65 would occur under Grant's direct supervision, yet he is frequently denied credit for his overall effort of the Union war effort. His epic confrontation with Lee in 1864-65 was just one facet of his farsighted leadership. 'Grant's strategy embraced a continent: Lee's a small state,' wrote Sherman. 'Grant's logistics were to supply and transport armies thousands of miles, where Lee was limited to hundreds.'"

The Raymond Chandler Papers

Raymond Chandler with a tongue-in-cheek look at the rules for marriage from a 1955 letter:

  1. Ride her on a short rein and never let her think she is riding you.
  2. If the coffee is lousy, don't say so. Just throw it on floor.
  3. Don't let her change the arrangement of the furniture more than once a year.
  4. Don't have any joint bank account unless she puts in the money.
  5. In case of quarrel, remember that it is always your fault.
  6. Keep her away from antique stores.
  7. Never praise her girlfriends too much.
  8. Above all never forget that a marriage is in one way much like a newspaper. It has to be made fresh every damn day of every damn year.
For evidence he was joking keep in mind he was married, "for thirty years, then months, and two days, she [his wife] was the light of my life my whole ambition. Anything else I did was just the fire for her to warm her hands on." He married once and was faithful till the day she died and never married again.

Samurai Jack

Samurai Jack was a great cartoon show than ran for 5 seasons. The first 4 with 13 episodes each ran on the Cartoon Network from 2001 to 2004. The 5th season was on Adult Swim it's concluding season in 2017 with only 10 episodes. The show was the brainchild of Russian born Genndy Tartakovsky who was also the creator of the popular Dexter's Laboratory.

Tartakovsky claims the inspiration for the show was a combination of David Carradine's Kung Fu, the work of Frank Miller (especially his samurai Ronin series), and the samurai films of Kurosawa. However, no name is given for the title character just like Clint Eastwood's "man with no name" westerns. He's called the slang "Jack" in the first episode and the name just stuck. Like Eastwood's Angel Eyes.

The main character Jack is voiced by actor Phil LaMarr who may be best known as Marvin from Pulp Fiction (yeah the same guy). Jack's nemesis the demon Aku is voiced by the iconic Mako in the first 4 seasons (Mako died in 2006). Greg Baldwin voiced Aku in season 5.

Aku's opening narrative gave the premise to the series: "Long ago in a distant land, I, Aku, the shapeshifting master of darkness, unleashed an unspeakable evil. But a foolish samurai warrior wielding a magical sword stepped forth to oppose me. Before the final blow was struck, I tore open a portal in time and flung him into the future where my evil is law. Now the fool seeks to return to the past to undo the future that is Aku."

There was no conclusion to the first 4 seasons. The show was left open-ended which is why it was so important to many to provide an ending in the 5th and final season. Even though fans had to wait 12-years for it. Luckily viewers never had to live through a live-action movie in the meantime.

Won't go into the reason I was thinking of the show or the various connections I was thinking of. I will say that it's time to re-watch Samurai Jack.
