Priests Playing Poker

The sins associated with playing cards are nothing new. The Synod of 1404 forbade card-playing by the clergy and in 1423 Saint Bernard called for the faithful to go home, get their playing cards and burn them right in the public square outside of Saint Peter's in the Vatican.

I wonder if that ruling against clergy playing cards has ever been rescinded?  Personally I can't ever recall seeing a priest at a poker table. And now I really want a version of Dogs Playing Cards but with priests instead.

Friday Flotsam and Jetsam

Have a new miscellaneous thoughts and observations post up on Substack.

Watched the debate last night until around 10:30 and had to quit because I couldn't take it any more. Trump, rightly, harped on how disastrous the open borders policy of this Administration has been for the country, Biden called it malarkey and claimed the Border Patrol Union supported him (a claim that was refuted in real-time by the union who said they never supported Biden and never will). How anyone could think Biden is in the same condition as the man who ran in 2020 that's running today is disturbing,

Some Presidential Debate Humor

When I think about tonight's Presidential debate I can't help but have two thoughts; I keep thinking of the Monty Python and the Holy Grail bit of "come see the repression in the system" and I hope comedian Shane Gillis gets some good material out of tonight's debate. Anyway...

How Steinbeck Used His Journal as a Tool of Discipline

How John Steinbeck used his journal as a "daily act of showing up." Or as Steven Pressfield calls it "putting your ass where your heart wants to be."

Love Steinbeck but funny enough have never read The Grapes of Wrath (probably because it was assigned reading in high school). Must have read Cannery Row a dozen times - one of my all-time favorite beach books.

The article is well worth you time. Good life advice - still haven't read The Grapes of Wrath but I need to remedy that!

The NCAA has decided to not test or punish players in the college playoffs testing positive for any marijuana. The leagues control testing for the regular seasons. All of them should announce they aren't testing either. Its now a recruiting tool and any league that still tests will be dinged and probably lose recruits because of it.

Choosing to Care for Yourself

My number one priority in life, above my happiness, above my family, above my work, is my own health. It starts with my physical health. Second, it's my mental health. Then, it's my spiritual health. Then it's my family's health. Then, it's my family's wellbeing. After that, I can go out and do whatever I need to do with the rest of the world. - Naval Ravikant

I Believe What I Believe

Think I've come to the conclusion that "nothing" moves faster than the speed of light and that "nothing" is the absence of "information" which is why the universe is expanding faster than the speed of light. "Information" also moves faster than the speed of light but not as fast as "nothing."  "Information" creates matter and energy at the sub-Planck quantum level and nothing made of matter or energy can move faster than the speed of light. Does that make sense to the physics geeks out there?

Monday Flotsam and Jetsam

Tonight is game 7 of the Stanley Cup finals which means starting tomorrow both the NBA and NHL are all done until next season and the only sports to bet on until football starts again in late August are baseball, golf, or soccer. I don't have the inclination to bet golf (outside the Masters) and no interest in soccer. In the past I'd bet the Red Sox or the Yankees or Dodgers the game after a loss with the idea none of those teams go on 2-game losing streaks. This season I have no interest in following the Red Sox and less interest in following results for New York or Los Angeles. Guess that means more beach and hiking time for me. JAWS

The iconic movie JAWS was released 49-years ago. It was one of the first movies I saw in a theater (I was a young kid and it wasn't on its first run) and have seen it a number of times over the years plus some documentaries on how it was made. I fully expect it to be re-released next summer for a special 50th anniversary event.

I've read a number of Peter Benchley noels over the years but never JAWS, Think it was a conscious omission. Perhaps next year I'll rectify that.

ABC Nightline - the Birth of Fake News?

It can be argued that ABC News: Nightline was the birth of fake news. The show's original tagline was  "The Iranian Crisis: America Held Hostage." That was highly editorial and jingoistic in nature if you think about it just for a minute. This should come as no surprise when you realize it was the brainchild of Roone Arledge who was promoted from heading ABC Sports to heading the news department as well. It's even less surprising when you realize that Arledge is the same guy who lost the rights to televise the real sport of NBA games and replaced it on Sunday afternoons with made-up competition of the Superstars

Superstars did better ratings on ABC than CBS did with NBA games in the same time slots. Likewise ABC News went from a 3rd place also ran to a ratings juggernaut under Arledge with the creation of ABC News: Nightline. The fact was not lost on ABC's competition and programming news stories for ratings (the clicks of the day) was off and running.
