Can you just imagine all the stories "journalists" will be telling about Joe Biden and his family and how they knew these facts all along but were censored from sharing them while Joe was in office? Here's a nice appreciation of Feynman written in celebration for what would have been his 100th birthday.

The Raymond Chandler Papers

Raymond Chandler with a tongue-in-cheek look at the rules for marriage from a 1955 letter:

  1. Ride her on a short rein and never let her think she is riding you.
  2. If the coffee is lousy, don't say so. Just throw it on floor.
  3. Don't let her change the arrangement of the furniture more than once a year.
  4. Don't have any joint bank account unless she puts in the money.
  5. In case of quarrel, remember that it is always your fault.
  6. Keep her away from antique stores.
  7. Never praise her girlfriends too much.
  8. Above all never forget that a marriage is in one way much like a newspaper. It has to be made fresh every damn day of every damn year.
For evidence he was joking keep in mind he was married, "for thirty years, then months, and two days, she [his wife] was the light of my life my whole ambition. Anything else I did was just the fire for her to warm her hands on." He married once and was faithful till the day she died and never married again.

Samurai Jack

Samurai Jack was a great cartoon show than ran for 5 seasons. The first 4 with 13 episodes each ran on the Cartoon Network from 2001 to 2004. The 5th season was on Adult Swim it's concluding season in 2017 with only 10 episodes. The show was the brainchild of Russian born Genndy Tartakovsky who was also the creator of the popular Dexter's Laboratory.

Tartakovsky claims the inspiration for the show was a combination of David Carradine's Kung Fu, the work of Frank Miller (especially his samurai Ronin series), and the samurai films of Kurosawa. However, no name is given for the title character just like Clint Eastwood's "man with no name" westerns. He's called the slang "Jack" in the first episode and the name just stuck. Like Eastwood's Angel Eyes.

The main character Jack is voiced by actor Phil LaMarr who may be best known as Marvin from Pulp Fiction (yeah the same guy). Jack's nemesis the demon Aku is voiced by the iconic Mako in the first 4 seasons (Mako died in 2006). Greg Baldwin voiced Aku in season 5.

Aku's opening narrative gave the premise to the series: "Long ago in a distant land, I, Aku, the shapeshifting master of darkness, unleashed an unspeakable evil. But a foolish samurai warrior wielding a magical sword stepped forth to oppose me. Before the final blow was struck, I tore open a portal in time and flung him into the future where my evil is law. Now the fool seeks to return to the past to undo the future that is Aku."

There was no conclusion to the first 4 seasons. The show was left open-ended which is why it was so important to many to provide an ending in the 5th and final season. Even though fans had to wait 12-years for it. Luckily viewers never had to live through a live-action movie in the meantime.

Won't go into the reason I was thinking of the show or the various connections I was thinking of. I will say that it's time to re-watch Samurai Jack.

Had the weirdest dream where I was golfing at a course I had played before but had to interrupt my round after 4 holes for a reason the golf pro accepted. Ghosts

I've decided that I'm not going to believe in ghosts. Why? Well the reason is pretty simple.

Every kid is taught that ghosts say "boo!" Who decided this? It's become unanimous. According to our culture and accepted norms - ghosts say "boo". But why would your spirit in death be saying something you never said in life? When was the last time you said "boo"? Were you impersonating a ghost?

The only explanation is that nobody has ever spoken with a ghost. And that must be because they don't exist. Logic.

As an aside - I think it would be funny if someone re-cut the movie Ghost so that Patrick Swayze's dialog after he dies is replaced by someone just repeating "boo!" over and over.

Idea for a New TV Show

Combine the craziness for Sports Talk Radio and Poker on TV. Here's the format:

  • Instead of an appearance fee - five players from a combination of sports writers / former pro athletes / local celebrities get $250 (or whatever the show's producers can afford) in poker chips
  • The game is No Limit Texas Hold 'Em
  • You have a dealer who is also the show's moderator/host
  • The show lasts 1 or 2 hours and with each hand dealt the dealer/moderator throws out a quick topic of discussion
  • Each player has say 10-15 seconds to throw out their take on the subject AND decide whether to bet or drop
  • The winner of the hand gets an extra 15 seconds on the topic
  • At the end the show - the players get to keep their chips and if they bust out - the player gets nothing, nada, zilch.
How could this format fail. You could even have a Tournament of Champions. (BTW - I reserve all rights to the idea)

Life Advice

"A learning experience is one of those things that say, 'You know that thing you just did? Don't do that." - Douglas Adams

I think living a good life can be boiled down to three simple rules.

1. First simply try to live life by the Golden Rule - treat others as you'd want them to treat you.

2. Try to make good decisions in life. For the most part you know instinctively a good choice from a bad choice. Try to make good choices.

3. You will make some bad choices - it's unavoidable. However when you do - treat your bad choice as a learning experience and take the words of Douglas Adams to heart and try not to make the same mistake twice.

Rinse, lather, repeat. A good life doesn't need to be complicated.

The Great Resist

Haunted Mesa by Louis L' Amour

Currently reading Haunted Mesa by Louis L' Amour and enjoying it. Was led to this decision by a strange sequence of events. First - a long time ago I had actually visited this mesa and the abandoned Indian cliff dwellings (but had no idea of their history and reputation for maybe being haunted). I was in the Four Corners area anyway and a guided tour just seemed the thing to do. Recently I read L' Amour's memoir Education of a Wondering Man and he went out of his way to mentioned spending over-night in these dwellings. As a man who knew all about the history of the old West L' Amour wouldn't have dedicated a chapter of his memoir if he didn't consider it significant. Finally when I had mentioned reading Education of a Wondering Man - Eric mentioned Haunted Mesa as one of the books he re-reads from time to time. Knowing how impactful books you feel compelled to re-read can be - I knew I had to pick this book up.

Will let you know how I make out and if this will join my list of books I need to re-read. Thanks Eric!

"The whole point is that the detective exists complete and entire and unchanged by anything that happens; he is, as detective, outside the story and above it, and always will be. That's why he never gets the girl, never marries, never really has any private life except insofar as he must eat and sleep and have a place to keep his clothes. His moral and intellectual force is that he gets nothing but his fee, for which if he can protect the innocent, guard the helpless, and destroy the wicked, and the fact he must do this while earning a meager living in a corrupt world is what makes him stand out." - Raymond Chandler (from a 1949 letter)

President Eisenhower's Farewell Address

The Raymond Chandler Papers

"My argument is and has always has been merely that there is no such thing as serious literature, that the survivals of Puritanism in the American mind make all but the most literate people incapable of thinking of literature without reference to what they call significance, and that most of this so-called serious literature or fiction is the most transient stuff in the world; the moment its message is dated, damn quick, it is dead stuff." Raymond Chandler (from a 1949 letter)

Friday Flotsam and Jetsam

Have a new miscellaneous thoughts and observations post up at Substack.

Admit I watched the fist 10 picks of last night's NFL Draft. It was a combination of not much else to do, curiosity over who the Patriots would take with the third pick, and a fleeting hope that Roger Goodell would publicly be served papers by Jon Gruden's legal team. Thursday Flotsam and Jetsam

Have a new miscellaneous thoughts and observations post up on Substack.

Tonight is the start of the NFL Draft. Have long said that this event should be held in the city of that year's Super Bowl champion - so this draft should be held in Kansas City not Detroit. This provides an extra bonus to the champion (who traditionally drafts last) while also taking away power from the commissioner's office. Love this idea.
