Tuesday Flotsam and Jetsam

Have a new miscellaneous thoughts and observations post up on Substack.

The Final Four has two great games on Saturday but I would not be surprised that both Michigan and Arizona beat each other up so much that the winner does not have much left to beat the winner of the Illinois and UConn game on Monday. I could be completely wrong about this though.

Monday Flotsam and Jetsam

Have a new miscellaneous thoughts and observations post up on Substack.

The Celtics clinched a playoff birth with their win over Charlotte yesterday. Boston was expected to make the playoffs but the way they did it was surprising. A 50+ win season and with no Jalen Brown or Derrick White in the clincher? Jason Tatum scored 32 points in the victory. The same Jason Tatum that is coming back from a torn Achilles ankle. Hard not to be bullish on the Celts chances.

Discipline, Perfection, and Continuity

Saturday Flotsam and Jetsam

Have a new miscellaneous thoughts and observations post up on Substack.

The March Madness Elite Eight field is set with the big upset last night of 6 seed Tennessee beating Iowa State 76-72. Amazed that this field will be pared to the Final Four by the end of Sunday. Amused by the folks who wonder why college football playoffs can't be more like March Madness. Have you ever tried to play a football game on just one day's rest? Opening Day and the Dawn of ABS Made Me Think of this Commercial

Thursday Flotsam and Jetsam

Have a new miscellaneous thoughts and observations post up on Substack.

Technically last night was Opening Day with the Yankees at the Giants but as far as I'm concerned today is the true Opening Day with the Red Sox at the Reds in Cincinnati. Boston's season win total is 87.5 games and as the saying goes it's either "Hell yeah!" or it's a hard no so I'm holding off betting anything on the season. Seems this team can either be playoff bound or suck.

Tuesday Flotsam and Jetsam

Have a new miscellaneous thoughts and observations post up on Substack.

Noticing a trend of conference realignment taking the better teams combined with millions of NIL money making Cinderella's less and less common and games more boring in March Madness. Yet powers that be keep talking about expanding the field. Can't help but think that even tanking NBA teams could probably beat any of the teams in the Final Four. The Sweet 16 field is set and the biggest upset was Iowa taking down defending champ Florida 73-72. That was a 9 over 1 upset and guessing it wrecked many of the brackets out there. Take comfort if you had the Gators reaching the Final Four that you weren't alone.

The NCAA is suing DraftKings for trademark infringement over the betting site's use of trademarked terms like March Madness and Final Four. This is a well known no-no and I can't help but think of how the Trump Administration won't use the term "war" to describe what's going on in Iran since that too would be a no-no since Congress never authorized a war. The math of March Madness is impressive. You start with 64 teams (I refuse the count the play ins) and by the end of the first weekend its down to the Sweet 16. After next weekend we get the Final Four with a champion crowned the following Monday. The thing to remember is that this math works in reverse too. You can start with one but if you keep doubling you'd have 64 in no time. And so on. Next thing you know old Jed's a millionaire.

Saint Cornelius of Ireland

Though not widely remembered today - at one point Saint Cornelius of Ireland (not to be confused with Saint Cornelius of Antioch) was second in popularity in the Emerald Isle only to Saint Patrick.

Saint Patrick is remembered for driving the snakes out of Ireland. Saint Cornelius was said to have driven the squirrels out of Ireland. This "miracle" of Saint Cornelius later proved to be his undoing. During the Great Potato Famine starving Irishmen and women wished they had tasty squirrel meat to eat and they cursed Saint Cornelius for driving out the furry rodents. In response to this outrage - Pope Pius IX removed Cornelius from the roll of official Catholic Saints.

His traditional Feast Day was celebrated April1st.

There was a tragic shooting at Old Dominion yesterday yet the usual voices calling for gun confiscation after such events are oddly silent today. Skeptical minds might think this is because the shooter was a radicalized Islamist felon given early release by a liberal judicial system and the good guys were unarmed military cadets. That doesn't quite match the preferred narrative does it. Wonder if that's why those voices are silent today?

The NFL is about to open their calendar year tomorrow but teams and players can announce deals now. This is why you've seen a flurry of top names being cut or signed with the actually contracts not being signed until tomorrow or later. Look for mid-level players to be signed later - maybe even after the NFL draft next month.

Monday Flotsam and Jetsam

Have a new miscellaneous thoughts and observations post up on Substack.

President Trump says he will not sign another bill into law until the Save America Act is passed in the Senate. Voter ID is something most Americans are in favor of and I hope this Presidential boycott works. It's another 80/20 issue Trump has placed the Republicans on the side of the 80% leaving the Democrats to explain why they favor something 88% of citizens are against.

Home Depot - Built from Scratch

Been meaning to post about this book on the history of Home Depot written by the founders but mainly by Bernie Marcus. They wanted to build a "do it yourself" superstore with a focus on, "Whatever is better for the consumer is better for the economy."

Important to remember that Lowe's was number one in the building supply industry until Home Depot sailed past them in 1989.

File this under once you see it you can't unsee it, "...the logic of supermarkets. Lumber was our meat. When you go into a grocery store, you never see the meat up front, because you want all the people to buy all the condiments before they get to the meat."

Home Depot started their affiliation with the Olympic Games in 1992 when the games were held in their home town of Atlanta. They remain one of the largest providers to Olympic hopefuls in the world. If you watched the recent Winter Olympics - you may have noticed the connectron.

Been doing Spring forward and Fall back for Daylight Savings all my life and it screws me up every time. I'm so sick of this ignorant way of doing things. I'd rather go back to sundials. Sorry for the crazy schedule today.

Saturday Flotsam and Jetsam

Historians may look back at yesterday's college sports roundtable as President Trump's "jump the shark" moment. A time when someone out there said to themselves MAGA can be beaten. Trump's best when he simply attends sporting events and waves to the fans instead of trying to insert himself into a sports controversy.
