Flotsam and Jetsam

Miscellaneous thoughts and observations.

Now would be a good time for President Trump to announce he's moving the Department of Agriculture to Kansas and the Department of Energy to Texas... I'm still convinced that Peyton Manning and his brother Eli only work out using Shake Weights... After the passing of NBA Hall of Famer Wes Unseld on Tuesday I've become overly worried about another NBA great Tiny Archibald who is 71-years old and had a heart transplant two-years ago. Tiny was a childhood favorite of mine... This is from two years ago but really the Babylon Bee could just re-post periodically... Random NBA observation - Terry Rozier was having a pretty decent season for Charlotte scoring 18 points per game to go along with 4 assists and 4 rebounds per game before the season was interrupted... The Wages of Sin (Minus Taxes) would be a good name for a band...

Flotsam and Jetsam

Miscellaneous thoughts and observations.

When I see a PI challenged mentioned in relation to preseason NFL games my mind imagines the head football coach throwing the red flag to challenge the referee to see who can name PI to the most decimal places... I like the 21/90 rule... I think the last time I went to Burger King was a couple of years ago on my birthday. I wanted one of those stupid paper crowns to wear out drinking... It's going to make many NFL fans happy (including me) when both Drew Brees (520) and Tom Brady (517) pass Peyton Manning (539) on the all-time TD pass list this season... Rio de Janeiro means "River of January". I wonder if somewhere there's a Rio de Febrero?... "Stay away from negative people. They have a problem for every solution." - Albert Einstein...

Flotsam and Jetsam

Miscellaneous thoughts and observations.

Don't understand people who consider reading to be a hobby. Do they also consider breathing to be a hobby? Because reading to me is just something my body does or has been conditioned to do... Funny because it's true... "To every man is given the key to the gates of heaven; the same key opens the gates of hell." - Buddhist proverb... He is known as the "tank man" to the outside world but I wonder if the man's name is known and venerated inside of China?... I'm still convinced that Peyton Manning and his brother Eli work out using only Shake Weights... Who knew? Albert Einstein and fellow physicist Leo Szilard once invented and patented a refrigerator... Laughed way too much at this (yes my mind is different from most)...

Flotsam and Jetsam

Miscellaneous thoughts and observations.

Peyton Manning should have insured his passing record with State Farm before it was broken... Heh heh... William Shakespeare, perhaps the greatest writer of all-time, was married to a woman who could neither read nor write... Maybe Boston fans were right - the Yankees do suck... For those following at home - Nike stock is now at $75.91. It was at $82 when they announced their Colin Kaepernick ad campaign... I'll say it again - if Donald Trump makes Nikki Haley his VP he'd be unbeatable in the 2020 election and potentially set Haley up for 8 more years of a Republican in the White House... What the world needs now is a Prog Rock Kazoo channel...

Flotsam and Jetsam

Miscellaneous thoughts and observations.

When the outrage over Justice Kennedy retiring dies down, President Trump should announce that he's turning the White House Press Briefing Room back into a swimming pool. Can you imagine how well the MSM would take that news?.. I'm still convinced that Peyton Manning and his brother Eli only work out using Shake Weights... It's funny because it's so true... Idea for a movie - Zombie Inventory Takers. The undead converge on a local mall to take inventory... The stuff nightmares are made of - the insect that sucks his prey dry and then wears the corpses of his victims... Have the "TRUMP/PENCE 2020 - No Fat Chicks" bumper stickers been printed up yet?... Looks like the attendance poor Mets are planting the seeds of a September Tim Tebow call-up...

Top 5 - Worst New England Patriots Losses

Disappointed in Sunday's Super Bowl loss but it is not close to the worst Patriots loss in my lifetime. Here's how I'd rank them.

1. 2007 Super Bowl loss to the Giants - this was supposed to be the "perfect" season. If this game is played 100 times the Giants maybe win once and guess what happens? Silver lining was that Tom Coughlan was respected in Boston by many for what he did for BC football so we felt good for him.

2. 2006 AFC Championship game 38-34 loss to Peyton Manning and the Indianapolis Colts. This one really hurt. Indy went on to win Super Bowl LXI over the Bears. The Patriots would have destroyed Chicago.

3. Giants Super Bowl XLVI loss. Not only did it give Eli Manning and the Giants two Super Bowl wins over the Pats but believe it or not there was a bit of a vibe that the end of the road was near for Tom Brady. That was six years ago.

4. 1978 preseason game vs Oakland. This is the game Darryl Stingley was paralyzed by Jack Tatum. Don't even know if this was a loss on the scorecard but we lost Darryl Stingley. Am I a bad person that this isn't higher on my list?

5. Super Bowl XX 46-10 loss to the Chicago Bears. Every male in New England felt much less manly after that beatdown.

The loss to the Eagles Sunday doesn't come close to making the list. Philadelphia was simply the better team - no shame in losing to a better team. The most devastating loss in my lifetime was the 2003 extra innings home run by Aaron Boone off Tim Wakefield. The Yankees went on to win the World Series and the day after that loss I had to drive to NYC for business. When I got there I seriously thought about jumping off a bridge (I take sports much less seriously now).

NFL Sunday - Week 9

So last week I wondered about what would happen if a major advertiser pulled out of sponsoring the NFL and I also laid blame of most of the NFL's problems at the forehead feet of Peyton Manning and what do you know. Papa John's blamed advertising with the NFL for the company's sluggish revenues. Shots fired. From the official pizza sponsor of the NFL!  Some trace Papa John's "rant" against the NFL to Jerry Jones, owner of the Cowboys who also owns 94 Papa John's franchises. But keeping in mind the common thread of suckitude - Peyton Manning also owns 32 Papa John's. If you love the NFL and America - it's your duty to boo Peyton Manning whenever you see him.

Some (like me) suggest the ratings drop is primarily due to people "cutting the cord" and getting rid of cable. Others are blaming the ratings drop on crappy Thursday night and crappy early Sunday morning London games diluting the product. Others are staying away from the violence of the NFL because of the damage caused by CTE. Some are boycotting the NFL over the National Anthem protests by the players. A controversy that's not going away. Whatever the reason viewers are abandoning the NFL and they aren't coming back.

On another front President Donald Trump's war on the NFL took another turn as the proposed new tax codes hits the NFL in another vulnerable spot - the NFL's penchant for blackmailing cities into ponying up tax dollars for new stadiums.  Viscerally Trump has hit the NFL in its two weakest spots - protests over the National Anthem and tax dollars for billionaire team owners. You have to hand it to him its a genius move. Is Trump finally getting revenge from the NFL for what they did to the USFL? I mean Trump can easily negotiate away some other proposed unpopular tax code changes but what elected Congressman or Senator is going to bat for the NFL these days and still remain electable? Genius.

Anyway on to the picks for the day. With a season record of 4-14-1 there's nowhere to go but up!

Dallas -.2.5 vs Kansas City

A two team moneyline parlay on the Eagles and Seahawks (risking $200 to win $140). Go birds!

Good luck.

NFL Sunday - Week 8

The man holding the sign may have a point. I haven't done the research but I'm guessing the NFL's decline in ratings probably starting going down right about the time Peyton Manning's grotesque forehead starting polluting the airways in thousands and thousands of cringe-worthy commercials. Everything bad in the NFL can in some way be blamed on Manning. So if you love the NFL and are a good American - you should boo Peyton Manning whenever you see him.

I have to wonder but if a business announced that they were no longer advertising with the NFL because of the anthem controversy  - would the public perception of that business be positive? I think it would. The company could enjoy a bump in good PR while at the same time saving those monies that would have been spent on commercials.

With wheelchair bound President George HW Bush having to apologize for patting a girls butt - I can see the following future NFL scenario; an openly gay NFL player files a harassment suit saying his teammates and coaches often pat him on the behind after good plays. It's coming.

First they denied there was a TV ratings problem, then they said the National Anthem protests had nothing to do with the ratings decline. Now they are justifying the rating decline by saying that it's less a decline than the rest of prime-time TV. Whistling by the graveyard.

On a nice note - you may have missed this but my favorite part of last week's games was Tom Brady high-fiving 200 military service members before the game with the Falcons.

On the year my picks are 3-12-1 on the season so maybe fade them. Good thing this is for entertainment purposes only.

Today I'll take the Pats/Chargers over of 49, Dallas -2.5 at Washington, and  Atlanta -6.5 at the Jets.

Good luck.

Flotsam and Jetsam

Miscellaneous thoughts and observations.

Republicans having to root for Donald Trump must be like Chicago Bears fans having to root for Jay Cutler... Kudos to Bob Cousy and Holy Cross... So is that DirecTV commercial implying that Lionel Ritchie and Peyton Manning are gay lovers? Why else would Ritchie be in Mannings' home first thing in the morning with Peyton's wife nowhere to be found... And yet Johnny Pesky is not in the Hall of Fame... Suzy Kolber's Mancave would be a good name for a fantasy football team... The truth is the truth...  When Scott Boras is trying to sign a new client - how long do you think it takes him to casually mention that he got JD Drew $94 million in career earnings?... Debunking the Aquatic Ape Theory... July was National Beer Month and August was National Anal Sex Month (seriously). They should combine those two and make September National Regrets Month... Interesting - why Obama won't pardon Snowden...

Flotsam and Jetsam

Miscellaneous thoughts and observations.

What a horrible Final Four aesthetically. Blowout games plus a court and camera angles that literally hurt the eyes... The science of why you should spend your money on experiences not things... North Carolina opened as a 1.5 point favorite over Villanova. I like the points... JayWrightsSuits - what a great Twitter handle... How about this for a trade - Red Sox send Pablo Sandoval and Steven Wright to the Padres for James Shields. Let's get it done!...  Excellent video breakdown of the Celtics win Friday night over the Warriors... Just for the heck of it I'm going to start calling people "Sugar Biscuits". "Hey Sugar Biscuits - how's it going?" It's the little things that amuse me... Disappointed that nobody has compared the D'Angelo Russell situation with the Lakers to the Wade Boggs' "Delta Force" situation back in the day with the Red Sox... Rob Gronkowski is the best!... So one of the athletes named in that Al Jazeera report just got suspended 80 games for PED's. The HGH allegations against Peyton Manning are going to stick in people's minds... Win a $650,000 bet but almost kill yourself? No thank you...

Flotsam and Jetsam

Miscellaneous thoughts and observations.

Going to do one of those payday loans today and spend all the money on Powerball tickets! What? No I don't need a financial adviser! Why do you ask?... Heh heh... If you watch the movie To Kill a Mockingbird backwards - it is the story of a black man brought back from the dead to break up some furniture (not sure it this was original to me)... Stephen Tobolowski tells the best stories... Speaking of movies - still amazed that role in Airplane! that went to Leslie Nielsen was originally offered to Christopher Lee... This is a pretty handy tool... Salad bars really should be re-named "vegetable buffets"... The ultimate US road trip... Has anyone made the "I'm skinny legs Peyton Manning and I have cable" and "I'm jacked up on HGH Peyton Manning and I have DirecTV" joke yet?... Interesting... Now that Brian Urlacher has all that hair - if he really grows it out would the Vikings offer him the job of Ragnar?... Best explanation of high school football I've read... I don't care how good the show Making a Murderer might be - I'm not going to invest 10-hours of my time in something that will just make me angry... Navy ship to be named after Medal of Honor winner Hershel "Woody" Williams...

Flotsam and Jetsam

Miscellaneous thoughts and observations.

If ESPN's Chris Mortensen was asked to sit on a jury on a case involving Peyton Manning - he'd have to be recused because he's a longtime friend. Yet we are supposed to think he's objective when it come to Peyton's reputed HGH usage... Excelsior! Stan Lee turned 93 yesterday... Is the brain "affected" by alcohol or "effected" by alcohol? Or both?... Manning's doctor is famous for his HGH therapy but we are supposed to believe he was going to him for other treatments... The Ewoks are dead. All of them... Words in a Cunning Order would be a good name for a blog - or a publishing company... My favorite part of the Manning story is now whenever Peyton gets mad at anyone - people can immediately ascribe it to "Roid Rage"... Touching stories of George W. Bush visiting soldiers in the hospital... So does Manning retire at the end of the season with this HGH story hanging over his head or does he try to stay on and dare the Broncos to cut him?... I'm an awful person for laughing at this...

Peyton Manning

Peyton Manning has never used HGH or broken any NFL rules ever. He is a great person of integrity is is beloved in America as witnessed by the large number of commercials he does. Praise be his name. Also Bill Cosby did not rape those women. - Baghdad Bob ESPN Spokesman

Flotsam and Jetsam

Miscellaneous thoughts and observations.

[Shocked] Shelby Miller was worth all of that? [Scratching my head] Is Shelby Miller worth all that? This trade has a whiff of Doyle Alexander for John Smoltz to me except this is pre-season not during the season... Heh heh... The things you learn on the Internet: the difference between caramel and butterscotch is butterscotch contains brown sugar instead of white... This may be the only thing from Charles Schultz that actually made me chuckle (I'm a bad person)... How much money do you think it would take to get Peyton Manning to sing, "On the bench it feels so weird" in that State Farm jingle?... Neal Pert is retiring from drumming... Still not 100% convinced that the @realDonaldTrump Twitter feed isn't actually a parody account. It would explain so much... Holy shit! Wait for it!... Boston sports troll Dan Shaughnessy won the Spink Award which means he gets into the baseball Hall of Fame -  which means going to Cooperstown to rub my balls all over Shaughnessy's plaque just made my bucket list...
