NFL Flotsam and Jetsam
Miscellaneous NFL thoughts and observations.
For those who are interested - the Reagan Theory of football betting (home teams getting 3 or less points) is now 9-14-2 on the season... The Cardinals and Bengals managed to score a combined 62 points but neither team managed to have a player with either 100 yards receiving or 100 yards rushing. I just found that unusual... The San Diego Chargers were 14-2 last year but this year are a pedestrian 5-5. The only thing that really changed from this season from last was the head coach being let go (and the coordinators leaving). The Chargers are just 1-4 on the road this season. I have to wonder if the team has trouble maintaining focus when not at home and I have to think that is a failure on the part of the coaching staff... For those who are interested - the Ted Baxter Theory of football betting (taking teams getting 10 or more points) is now 10-12-2 on the season... If Eric Mangini can game plan the Steelers into a 19-16 loss. How bad do you think the Steelers will do faced with a Bill Belichick game plan?... During his first 5 seasons - Peyton Manning averaged 20 INT's per season. Manning then had a 4-year stretch when he had 10 or fewer INT's. This year he has already has 11 picks. During his first 5 seasons Manning was sacked on average 21.6 times per year. Then he had a 4-year stretch where he was sacked on average 15.5 times per season. This year he's on pace to be sacked about 20 times. I think that we are seeing the regression and decline of Manning due to getting old. Its not an aberration. Manning is losing that magic touch...

Ronald Reagan vs. Ted Baxter
Time for another installment of the Ronald Reagan vs. Ted Baxter betting NFL football contest.
The conservative theory of NFL betting is to take a home team getting 3 or fewer points. Who is more conservative than Ronald Reagan? Note - this theory does not include games which are a "pick". The Ted Baxter theory of football betting says to take the NFL teams getting 10 or more points under the idea that both teams are professionals and how much difference could there be between two groups of professionals? Ted Baxter used this method to soundly whip Lou Grant betting football games.
Week 8 NFL Picks
Ronald Reagan - going into Sunday the Ronald Reagan theory has been 8-5 for the season. Sunday, however, was not a good day for the Ronald Reagan Theory as it went 0-3 with St. Louis getting 3 losing to the Browns, Minnesota getting 1 losing to the Eagles, and San Francisco getting 2.5 losing to New Orleans. That puts the Ronald Reagan Theory at .500 for the season at 8-8.
Ted Baxter - going into Sunday Ted's record was at 5-8-1 for the season. On Sunday Ted's theory went 1-2 with the Dolphins getting 10 covering, San Diego easily covering giving 10 and the Patriots giving 15 smoking the Redskins. That puts the Ted Theory at 6-10-1 for the season. It should be noted that if you did not include the Patriots games (I don't think even Ted Baxter would bet against the Patriots) then the Ted Baxter theory becomes 6-7 for the season.

Week 7 NFL Picks
Ronald Reagan - going into today the Ronald Reagan theory has been 7-4 for the season. Last week the theory went 1-0 with the Chiefs getting 3 beating the Bengals. Today, once again, there were one game each for Ronnie and Ted. The Bills were getting 3 from the Ravens and Buffalo won outright 19-14. That raises Ronnie's season mark to 8-4. The Monday Night game between Jacksonville and Indy also will qualify as the Jags are at home currently getting 3 points.
Ted Baxter - last week the Ted Baxter theory went 0-1 as the Chargers easily covered. This week the Patriots were giving 16 to the Dolphins and they also covered easily by winning 49-28. That put Ted's record at 5-8-1 for the season. Not sure about you but it's beginning to become clear that there's something to the Ron Reagan theory.

Week 4 NFL Picks
Ronald Reagan - going into today the Ronald Reagan theory has been 6-4 for the season. Last week the theory went 0-2 with both the Chiefs and Broncos getting smuckled at home. Today there were one game each for Ronnie and Ted. Chiefs getting 3 beat the Bengals 27-20. That raises Ronnie's season mark to 7-4.
Ted Baxter - last week the Ted Baxter theory went 1-1-1 as the Colts easily covered, the Patriots pushed giving 17 and the Cowboys were lucky to leave Buffalo with a W never mind cover the 11 points. This week the Chargers were giving 10 to the Raiders and they covered by winning 28-14. That put Ted's record at 5-7-1 for the season.

Week 4 NFL Picks
Ronald Reagan - so far the Ronald Reagan theory has been 6-2 for the season. Last week the theory went 3-2. Right now there are two games that qualify. The Chiefs are getting 2 hosting the Jaguars and the Broncos are getting 1 hosting the Chargers. Two other games are close and I'll base things on final game-time point spreads (the Rams are getting 4 against the Cardinals and the 49ers are getting 3.5 against the Ravens).
Ted Baxter - last week the Ted Baxter theory went 1-2 as both the Cowboys and Colts easily covered while the Chargers lost outright to the Chiefs. That puts the Ted Baxter theory at 4-5 for the season. This week there are three games that fit the theory. The Cowboys are giving 11 to Buffalo in Buffalo on Monday night. The home Patriots giving 17 to the hot and cold Browns. Finally the line on the Indy / Tampa Bay game has moved down to 10 points at the time of writing from the 11 points its been at most of the week. Some places have the line at 9.5 - I am going to include the Indy game as an official pick for Ted Baxter but check the line at kickoff.

Week 4 NFL Picks
Ronald Reagan - so far the Ronald Reagan theory has been 3-0 for the season. There were no games that fit the theory last week but this week there are a bunch. The Falcons are getting 2.5 against the visiting Texans. The Lions are getting 3 against the visiting Bears and their new QB Brian Griese. The Vikings are getting 1.5 against Brett Farve and the Packers. The 49ers are getting 2 against the Seahawks. Finally tonight the home Giants will be getting 3 against the visiting Eagles. Honestly none of the home teams appeal to me personally but these 5 games should be a good test for the Ronald Reagan theory.
Ted Baxter - last week the Ted Baxter theory went 0-2 as both the Patriots and Steelers easily covered (although a friend of mine says the Steelers game shouldn't count because he had 9 points as the spread at game-time). Going with the 0-2 mark for last week - that puts the Ted Baxter theory at .500 for the season (3-3). I would like to point out that the three losses were due to either the Patriots or Steelers (maybe they should be the exceptions to the betting rule). This week there are three games that fit the theory. The home Cowboys are giving 13 to the surprisingly inept Rams. The home Chargers are giving 11.5 to the inept and badly coached Chiefs. Finally the line on the Indy / Denver game has crept up to 10 points at the time of writing from the 9 points its been at most of the week. I am going to include the Indy game as an official pick for Ted Baxter.

Week 3 NFL Picks
Ronald Reagan - there are no home teams getting 3 or less points this week. This theory went 2-0 week one with Buffalo and Green Bay getting the wins. It went 1-0 in week 2 with Arizona successfully defending home turf. That's 3-0 for the season.
Ted Baxter - there are two game that qualify this week - the Bills are getting 17 points against the Patriots and the 49ers are getting 10 points against the Steelers (this line has been jumping between 9 and 10 points but its at 10 currently). There were no teams getting 10 or more points in week 1 but the theory went 3-1 in week 2 (Steelers covered while Baltimore, Chicago and Jacksonville did not). That's 3-1 for the season.
