Tim Scott on Being Black in Modern America

"Here’s the challenge though. Black families survived slavery. We survived poll taxes and literacy tests. We survived discrimination being woven into the laws of our country. What was hard to survive was Johnson’s Great Society, where they decided to put money, where they decided to take the Black father out of the household to get a check in the mail. And you can now measure that in unemployment and crime and devastation." - Senator Tim Scott

Marginalia

Marginalia is what Maria Popova calls her notes she writes in the margins of books. So it was natural for her to choose The Marginalian as the replacement name for Brain Pickings. She explains the reason for the name change in this 2021 essay.

Fully agree that we should not encourage more incompetence by rewarding badly written or spam emails. She is a voracious reader and has suggested authors Seneca, Alan Watts, Dani Shapiro, James Gleick, and Janna Levin. I've put a book from each on my reading wish list.

You may find me reposting some of her essays or reviews from time to time and I highly recommend her site.

Currently Reading

Here's the books I'm currently reading:

Just finishing up Michael Lombardi's latest book Football Done Right. Will probably do a Substack post on this book soon but I highly recommend it. Perhaps the best book on the NFL I've read. Liking it so much because I'm also reading it in Lombardi's voice.

Reading Elon Musk by Walter Isaacson. At the point where PayPal was just sold in the book. So far enjoying it very much.

Re-reading The Russia House by John le Carre. Have read the book and seen the movie in the past but am finding the context of the War in Ukraine gives the book deeper meaning than I appreciated in the past. Am having a hard time picturing Barley as anyone but Sean Connery though.

About halfway through Tim Ferriss's Tools of Titans. The Internet related content may be somewhat outdated but finding great book recommendations and timeless quotes. Still feel a real-world MBA based on just the books of Walter Isaacson and Tim Ferriss would be a big winner.

Monday Flotsam and Jetsam

Have a new miscellaneous thoughts and observations post up on Substack.

Today is September 11th and it just feels off. Is the Administration intentionally playing down the date because it would just bring up questions about the horrible abandonment of Afghanistan? Or is it more nefarious? Just feels off.
