The Importance of a Single Vote

On this date in 1867 the United States purchased Alaska from Russia for the price of $7 million which worked out to about $.02 per acre. This purchase was known at the time as Seward's Folly after Secretary of State William Seward who arranged the purchase. Seward was also in charge of trying to get the Senate to ratify the treaty authorizing the purchase. The treaty was ratified on April 9th but it passed by a single vote.

Think of that. If one person changed their vote from yes to no - Alaska might not be part of the US today

Thursday Flotsam and Jetsam

Have a new miscellaneous thoughts and observations post up on Substack.

Amusing that if Joe Biden loses re-election many will blame Donald Trump while a good number of others will blame RFK Jr. for "stealing" votes from him. Very few will blame Joe Biden which is a sign of how some people never take responsibility for their own actions. Ever. Also find it funny that all the Democratic Party's problems could be solved by replacing the Biden/Harris ticket with the RFK/Shanahan one. RFK Jr. did initially run as a Democrat until Biden blocked him. As always - please Subscribe, hit the Like button, or share the Link. Thanks!

Chicago Trib vs NYT

Interesting comparison between the Chicago Tribune (Trib) and the New York Times (NYT). The Trib used to be wholly isolationist in the FDR and the post WW II era plus Republican while the NYT seems completely pro globalist, WEF and open borders while being a Democratic Party organ. Seeming diametrically opposites.

Additionally Colonel Robert McCormick completely viscerally hated FDR and the New Deal. Meanwhile the NYT seemingly hates Donald Trump and MAGA. Ask Senator Tom Cotton how the NYT feels about conservatives. They both filtered the news to meet their preconceived viewpoints and omitted those that did not to make sure they keep their subscribers' echo chamber alive - just 70-years apart.

The Trib called itself The World's Greatest Newspaper while the NYT's slogan is All the News Fit to Print. Arguably neither was ever true. The more things change - the more they stay the same.

When I heard the news about RFK Jr. nominating Nicole Shanahan as his choice as VP my first thought was of George W. Bush selecting friend Harriet Miers as his choice for Supreme Court nominee. Education of a Wandering Man

"That much maligned man General George Armstrong Custer - about whom more nonsense has been written by people who know nothing about him than has been written about any man in history - was another. Secretary of War William Belknap (later dismissed from office) had been appointing political friends of his as Indian agents, and they were robbing the Indians, starving them, and taking every advantage. Custer objected, but a lowly Lieutenant Colonel (Custer's actual rank) got nowhere by complaining to the Secretary of War, and later they contrived an excuse for a court martial.

Custer saw the Indians being mistreated and in his book, My Life on the Plains, said that if he were an Indian he would be fighting.

How many Indians were present at the Little Big Horn we will never know. Their number has been estimated at between two thousand to nine thousand. Logic was completely on Custer's side. The Indians had never been able to field a large force because of the supply problem. When so many Indians came into an area, the game fled the country, so whatever food the Indian had he had to bring with him. For the same reason he could not stay long in the field.

A fact often missed is that just a few miles south and a few days earlier, General George Crook, another of our most successful Indian fighters, had made the same mistake.

In the bitter Battle of the Rosebud, often overlooked because of the drama of the Custer massacre, Crook was fought to a standstill by many of the same Indians. Had it not been for the protests of Frank Grouard, Crook's chief of scouts, and the fact he was down to eight rounds of ammunition per man, Crook may have pursued the Sioux down the canyon of the Rosebud into an even worse trap than Custer's, where he would have lost three times the men.

Knowing the Indian problems with supply, neither Crook on June 17 or Custer on June 25 was willing to believe that such a large force was in the field." - Louis L' Amour

That's a perspective I had not seen before. I bring it up now both because I'm currently reading the book but also because today is Medal of Honor Day and one of the few people who actually won two Medals of Honor was Custer's brother Thomas Custer who also killed at the Little Big Horn. Sadly, like many. my perception of George Armstrong Custer is largely colored by his portrayal in Dustin Hoffman's Little Big Man.

Pondering the Future of Commissioned Real Estate Agents

This is an issue and story I've been following and wondering about the fallout.

Steve makes some excellent points and I thought I'd share my anecdotal information. Recently I both sold my place and bought a home with my girlfriend so I have some first hand knowledge. We used the same real estate agent for both transactions and I was pleased with both.

As far as selling my place: my agent, who is also a friend, had me ask for $30,000 more than I planned on but he knows the market. He had to do all the advertising and was there the day of the Open House to answer questions from all comers. I was on vacation and it sold for the asking price the same day! As far as I'm concerned the extra money more then paid for his services. Sure it was a good payday for him but remember all those people who went to the open house all also had agents. Also remember my agent was chosen after years of being an honest, good guy to his friends who weren't in the market.

Buying a place we had three basic requirements: it had to greatly reduce my girlfriend's commute, a fenced in yard for our dog, and a smaller home (just me and her) - no need for more than 2-3 bedrooms or 1-2 bathrooms. We saw multiple houses and made multiple offers and was outbid on each by someone offering well over the asking price each time. We didn't pay a dime for those unsuccessful bids. The home we bought we offered the asking price and made the offer right away. We had everything lined up thanks to our friend.

We would hire him again in a heartbeat  and heartily recommend him. When the verdict was announced I never checked if this may have meant money coming back to me. We signed paperwork and went into this with our eyes open and would do it again.

My question is does that signed paperwork that specifies the commission rate supersede anything else? What to keep the better agents to ask for more then the industry standard 5-6%?

The Best Way to Remember Things - Take Notes!

The value of reading, and of writing things down that we read, or hear, cannot be overstated. Two expert guests (who specialize in speech and memory) on the Huberman Lab podcast explained that when we read text or listen to something and then write key aspects/takeaways down by hand- not typing, it engages our motor control centers in ways that deeply embed that information to our memory. Taking notes, however cursory, turns out to be the best way to remember and implement information later. - Andrew Huberman Ph. D

Dreams

Sometimes my dreams are very realistic mainly because they're sometimes of me doing some mundane task. Recently had one where I volunteered (for some reason) to set up cable and Internet at a vacation house we were staying. (Why we had to do this and not the landlord was another question I did not pursue.)

Anyway - we were staying in a small town in Maine that was served by Cablevision  and I was dropped off at the small local office and even waited in line to set up service. The strange thing is Mick Jagger was one of the people doing customer service behind the counter. He had a small role to play in this scenario but that was his job. It was very realistic.

My question is - do I now get to say I've met Mick Jagger?

What tipped me off that it was a dream is that we have no upcoming plans to vacation in Maine.

Let the Day Begin - The Call

Education of a Wandering Man

"They are out there by the thousands, wonderful stories. Many have never gotten into the histories, although occasionally told by local newspapers or in privately printed booklets. Stories of wagon-train massacres, buried treasures, gun battles, cattle roundups, border bandit raids - no matter where you go, east, west, north, and south, there are stories. People are forever asking me where I get my ideas, but one has to listen, to look, and to live with awareness. As I have said in several of my stories, all men look, but so few can see. It is all there, waiting for any passerby." - Louis L' Amour

"Ask not what your country can do for you - ask what you can do for your country." - John F. Kennedy

I used to think that phrase from JFK's Inaugural Address was the height of patriotism but as I've gotten older no longer agree. What part of liberty does doing things for the government entail? What part of capitalism?

If you think about it the "Ask Not" quote easily could be a slogan for the Chinese Communist Party. Almost fits like a glove.

Education of a Wandering Man

"Often, when people hear of my career and the many jobs at which I worked, they believe I did this for writing experience. That's nonsense. I worked at those many jobs because work was hard to get and one took what was available at the time. During the Depression years and immediately before, jobs were scarce and a man had to keep hustling to keep working. A job might last for an hour or two, or perhaps for several days, and weeks went by with no work at all." - Louis L' Amour

"This is a story of an adventure in education, pursued not under the best of conditions. The idea of education has been so tied to schools, universities, and professors that many assume that there is no other way, but education is available to anyone within reach of a library, a good post office, or even a newsstand."

"Often I hear people say they do not have time to read. That's absolute nonsense. In the one year that I kept that kind of record, I read twenty-five books while waiting for people. In offices, applying for jobs, waiting to see a dentist, waiting in a restaurant for friends, many such places. I read on buses, trains, and planes. If one really wants to learn, one has to decide what is important. Spending an evening on the town? Attending a ball game? Or learning something that will be with you your life long?" - Louis L'Amour 1939

Education of a Wandering Man

Started Louis L'Amour's memoir Education of a Wandering Man the other day and was pleasantly surprised to find the introduction to the 1939 book by Daniel J. Boorstin who himself was both an author and the Librarian of Congress. To say Boorstin knew a thing or two about books and authors would be an understatement. He wrote, "We are often told that we are what we eat. In our world since the printing press it may be more accurate to say we are what we read."

L'Amour read everything and though he was a "lone reader but somehow never felt lonely in the company of a book."

Louis L'Amour showed many of the traits of both a wise and happy man to Boorstin:

  • "Louis was a modest man, slow to reveal what he really knew."
  • "He kept his own values undented."
  • "Jealous of any time not spent writing, he luxuriated within the walls of his books."
  • "Louis was a good listener, as eager to learn from the spoken as from the printed word."
  • "Louis gives us a lesson - too seldom offered by academic or professional critics - in open-mindfulness and literary charity.
Louis L'Amour is quickly becoming a favorite of mine.

Blog Anniversary

Just another day to me but I know some people celebrate these anniversaries - especially as they get up there in years. Today is the date that my blog turns 20-years old. Hard to digest that I'm been doing this for so long.

A brief story on the number 20. A longtime goal of mine has been to drive Route 20 from Fenway Park to the Kingdom in Seattle. Route 20 is, I believe, the longest route in the country with the only break in its cross-country trek briefly in Yellowstone Park. Always wanted to do that drive. Closest I've come is once on a nice fall Sunday I drove a rented convertible from Auburn, MA to Auburn, NY all on Route 20. That was fun!

The reasons for this slight were mostly because Einstein was Jewish. The committee eventually gave Einstein the Nobel Prize in 1921 for his 1905 explanation of the photoelectric effect but that was really too little too late.

As smart as Einstein was it makes me chuckle to remember that when Einstein graduated from our equivalent of high school - he finished second in his class. The name of the person who was valedictorian is lost to history but I couldn't help but think of someone back then saying something like, "Yeah Einstein was pretty smart in high school but you should have seen this other guy!"

Also when Albert Einstein first visited the US in 1921 - the US Senate saw fit to debate the validity of the Theory of Relativity - seriously. Random Albert Einstein trivia; when Einstein lived in Princeton he had a small 17-foot sailboat he named Tinef which is Yiddish for "piece of junk". I find that endearing.

Top 5 - Movies that Would Be "Cancelled" Today

Here's a list of my top 5 movies that are too politically incorrect to be made today:

1. Tropic Thunder - Take your pick of character. No way that could be made today not even to mention Tom Cruise's cameo.

2. Dune: Part 2 - Keep wondering how a movie so overtly about Muhammad and Islam can be made without a fatwa against Timothy Chalamet or Dennis Villeneuve.

3. Dodge Ball - Watch it some time. Funny but sometimes you feel bad for laughing.

4. 10 - Rewatched it about a year ago and it it so cringe worthy.

5. A new all-girls Ghostbusters - the Hollywood equivalent of a double-negative. The all-girls remake was so woke to be unwatchable and now who would touch bankrolling a new version with a ten-foot pole.

Bill Walsh

"When you stand and overcome a significant setback, you'll find an increasing inner confidence and self-assurance that has been created by conquering defeat. Absorbing and overcoming this kind of punishment engenders a sober, steely toughness that results in a hardened sense of independence and a personal belief that you can take on anything, survive and win." - Bill Walsh from The Score Takes Care of Itself

Tuesday Flotsam and Jetsam

Have a new miscellaneous thoughts and observations post up on Substack.

Just one more day until NFL free agency arrives and teams are finally able to announce player signings. Like the Patriots could formally announce their 1-year deal with Jacoby Brissett.  They're still able to sign free agents that were on their team last season. Like New England signing Mike Onwenu to a 3-year $57 million deal. As always please Subscribe, hit the Like button, or share the Link. Thanks!

Sometimes When You Assume

Have to wonder why counties with sheriffs or governors who follow the law don't post personnel and signs that any illegal immigrant that tries to vote will be arrested and deported. Most legal immigrants are against illegal one's jumping the line. (Via)

Dune: Part Two

If you haven't read Frank Herbert's first Dune book or seen director Dennis Villeneuve's 2021 movie you may want to skip this review. Or skip this movie altogether.

Finally saw Dune: Part Two in the theater over the weekend and it has prompted me to write this review.

The NFL year starts on Wednesday but news of transactions is starting to "leak" out. Many (like me) are starved for any sort of football and news will do just fine for now. This is also why the NFL draft brings in such big ratings. A buffet fir the starving sports fans. As always - please Subscribe, hit the Like button, or share the Link. Thanks!
