Interesting and informative look at what may have happened with the Nordstream pipeline. It most likely wasn't sabotage.
I was hooked at the common sense look at a 17-hour gap between explosions but was completely sold after the explanation of hydrates, maintenance of pipelines, and the incompetence of Russian workers.
College Football Power Rankings
Phil Steel has the updated college football Vegas Power Rankings up on his site. These would be the hypothetical point spreads between teams on a neutral field. Two things of interest jumped out at me:
- Ohio State would be an almost 10-point favorite over Michigan on a neutral field but this year that game is AT Ohio State.
- Boston College would be just a 2-point favorite over Buffalo but Holy Cross beat Buffalo at Buffalo this season. Does that mean a hypothetical BC/Holy Cross game this year would be a pick-em?

Do We Need 10K Steps a Day?
Interesting look at where the idea of needing to get 10,000 steps a day to stay healthy came from (hint - it didn't come from science). And also some useful knowledge:
One major study released in March debunked the 10,000 step goal, suggesting that anywhere between 6,000 and 8,000 steps a day is just enough, and anything more than 8,000 doesn't actually count in terms of health benefits.
Starlink Maritime
Was surprised at both the download speeds (up to 350 Mbps) and its cost ($5,000 per month). Guess the thinking is if you can afford a yacht - you can afford $5,000 a month for Internet.
Netflix in Trouble?
A survey of 1,000 Americans says 1 in 4 plan to ditch the service in the upcoming year.
As things get tight, people living from paycheck to paycheck will naturally look to cut expenses they can live without. Netflix falls into that category. But so does other services like Disney+, Hulu, etc. This doesn't even take into account the amount of people who may cut the cord on cable TV as well for similar reasons.
The one service that may be immune to this financial crunch may be Amazon Prime. Many, like me, signed up for the service because of the free shipping and the streaming service was just an added bonus. British Pound Sinks vs US Dollar
England is experiencing an "economic crisis" according to some. Across the board tax cuts are, in some people's minds, the reason for the crisis. The tax cuts will lead to deficits which in turn will lead to inflation.
Is it me or are the same people warning that government deficits in the UK will lead to inflation the same folks who were cheerleaders to the Biden Administration's huge deficits? Which coupled with the printing of trillions of dollars backed by nothing and ignorant energy policies has led to inflation.

The Bonfire of the Headscarves
For Iran's protesters, the fight for women's freedom of choice is now synonymous with a desire to end rule of the ayatollahs.
With the risks these citizens are taking and the sacrifices they are making, they are proving that if any tradition needs defending 24 hours a day by armed men who have to beat people to embrace it, then it deserves to perish.
Amen to that.
The cynic in me wonders if we haven't seen the same type of "I stand with the women of Iran" social media out-poring stances as we did with the "I stand with Ukraine" social media flood the zone because the Biden Administration is looking to make a deal with the ruling elite in Iran and supporting women's freedom in Iran may hurt the money train.
Meta Now Firing People Based Upon an Algorithm
No HR expert but firing people supposedly "at random" based upon an algorithm seems like a class action lawsuit waiting to happen. May have worked in the past at smaller tech firms but Meta's, formerly Facebook, deep pockets are bound to attract some cash hungry attorneys. Woe to Meta if the algorithm isn't truly random but uses weighted measures a jury may find biased.
Also amused that Meta blames the War in Ukraine for reduced revenue. The two things killing Meta is Mark Zuckerberg's insistence on going all in on VR when the market is still 5-years away and Apple's privacy stance which has greatly hampered Meta's ability to harvest personal data from users like in the past.

Amazon's $1 Billion Thursday Night Football Deal Is Off To Good Start
Interesting look at how Amazon's 11-year $11 billion Thursday Night Football deal is paying off.
Amazon says the first TNF game resulted in more Prime membership signups during a 3-hour period than any time in the company's history, including Prime Day, Black Friday, and Cyber Monday.
The revenue from commercials during the broadcast go a long way for paying the $1 billion per year pricetag but the $139 yearly Prime subscription fees and the fact that Prime members spend on average $1,400 per year on Amazon is the real cherry on top.
I've long advocated that Amazon make a similar deal with Notre Dame once the Fighting Irish's contract is up with NBC. They would have similar success for similar reasons if they inked that deal.

Child Predators Use Twitch to Systematically Track Kids Livestreaming
You should not allow your children to use Twitch (or TikTok). Disturbing.
The fact that Bloomberg and a researcher could uncover so many predatory accounts shows that Amazon and Twitch are not making child safety a priority.
Meanwhile this is the type of account they are apparently cracking down on. Guess that messaging is not OK but "spicy" children is to Jeff Bezos.

Starlink Speeds Slow in US and Worldwide
This makes sense as Starlink is a shared network and the more users the more bandwidth contention you'll run into. It's also good to remember that even Elon Musk calls the service, "better than nothing." Which it is - if you have no access to broadband at your home or just DSL - Starlink is a fantastic solution. But if you have access to fiber or cable services - you'll get better broadband going those routes.
Where I see Starlink being really financially successful is in non-traditional connection settings. Longhaul trucks, RV's, yachts, boats of all kinds, and airlines are some applications just to name a few. Also the T-Mobile partnership is very interesting - potentially you could have cell service in North America everywhere you can see the sky.
B-21 Raider Will Be Rolled Out In Early December
Very cool. The sixth-generation stealth bomber - the B-21 will be rolled out in early December.
The key words there being "rolled out" since the images of the B-21 have already been made public (the above image was via a simple Google image search) and the B-21 is not scheduled to have its actual first flight until some time next year.
There are only six B-21's in production and the actual pricetag for the bomber is unknown but still - very cool.

2023 Football Hall of Fame Class
A max of 5 players can be elected and from the newcomers I would vote for Darrelle Revis, James Harrison, and Joe Thomas. From the returning players I'd support Zach Thomas (he was Brian Urlacher without the hype) and Clay Matthews (who like Thomas was wrongly overshadowed by more hyped but not more productive players).
For contributors I really hope Robert Kraft finally gets his due and gets elected. He's not getting any younger and it's a crime that Jerry Jones was inducted before Robert Kraft.
The big problem with the Hall election process is the use of an advocate to plead the player's case. Get a bad advocate and miss induction. It's a very flawed process.

Have Two Important Things Changed in America?

Ignoring for a moment that we're a republic and not a democracy - I'm left wondering if some of the problems we face today are because those two key aspects of American life have changed?
Americans are no longer "joiners" and associations and friends "in real life" seems to becoming a thing of the past. Spending so much time in the Metaverse seems an awful waste to me. "Bowling alone" is increasingly a problem.
So too is the fact that government in the US has become much more centralized than ever before. And more powerful. The government of 1918 wouldn't have had the power to lock down the nation like we recently did.
Are we losing two of the things that de Tocqueville saw that made us great? I worry we are trending in the wrong direction. I also worry we may not be able to get off the path we're on.

Characteristics of Cities

Made me wonder if there are modern indicating characteristics to cities in the US being either Democrat or Republican that would be similar to the printing press making a city Protestant or Catholic back in 1500. What is the Ethereum ‘Merge’ and What Does it Means for Crypto?
On Wednesday, the world’s second-most valuable cryptocurrency completed an update that would significantly slash its energy usage.
The new system will use 99.95% less energy, according to the Ethereum Foundation. The upgrade, which changes how transactions occur and how ether tokens are created, could give Ethereum a major advantage as it seeks to surpass rival blockchain Bitcoin.

How the Media Fell for A Racism Sham
Everything that happened here fits into a growing problem in mainstream newsrooms; the injection of political values even into straight reporting, undermining the very purpose of journalism.
There were so many red flags to this story yet people like the NY Times ran with it because it fit their narrative. The only red flag missing was the Duke player saying after they called me the n-word they yelled, "This is MAGA country!"
What are the repercussions here? Who will take responsibility for the lie? Will the NY Times issue an apology? Will Duke suspend the volleyball player who issued the accusations? Unlikely. We live in an age where increasingly nobody is forced to take responsibility for their actions.
Denmark ENDS Covid Vaccinations for Almost Everyone Under 50
Hard to read this as anything other than admission by Danish health officials that the risk of adverse effects from mRNA shots is now viewed as more risky than actually getting COVID. Denmark is not saying COVID is over or gone away - just that they still believe in the principle of "first do no harm." I firmly believe that any US doctor who recommends vaccines for a patient under 18-years old is probably breaking their Hippocratic Oath.

Justin Verlander

Was thinking last night about how great Justin Verlander has been these past couple of seasons. He's the reigning AL Cy Young award winner and is second in odds to win it again this year. His 16-3 record and 1.84 ERA is pretty impressive but will it be enough to overcome Dylan Cease's excellent season for the White Sox.
Also couldn't help but think of how Verlander was taken with the second pick of the 2004 MLB draft behind Matt Bush who was taken by San Diego first overall. Bush never made it to the major leagues. Can you imagine how the fortunes of the Padres may have been much different if they had gone with Verlander instead?
Also to top it off - Verlander is married to Kate Upton (pictured above).

Luck favors the prepared mind. Couldn't help but think this is excellent advice for poker players.

Choosing Happiness
The two types of happiness and choosing to be happy. Truly agree that happiness is a choice. But also with the great man that said happiness needs courage:

It takes courage to choose to be happy and to take the actions required.

The Fakery of “Fighting Inflation”
Some interesting points made here. Some nuance may be oversimplified but in the whole I agree with the argument.
In government and at the Federal Reserve it should be the same as with doctors - first do no harm. But instead the bankers feel they must tinker to show they're doing something. And generally there's no repercussions for when their tinkering goes wrong.
