College Football Thoughts

Some preseason college football observations. One has to wonder if Nate Bargatze becomes to Vanderbilt what Shane Gillis became to Notre Dame. If so - what comedian is next? Does Will Ferrell and USC get grandfathered into this?

Was having these observations anyway and figured may as well jot them down and put on Substack.

Stuff I found interesting or amusing and thought I'd share.

- Rory McIlroy spares no expense with Masters Champions dinner.

- Matt Ridley: Ehrlich's anti-human legacy. Ehrlich was the opposite of a rational optimist.

- Glenn Reynolds: Don't drone me bro! "Trump loves tariffs, maybe an 'oil security fee' on each barrel of oil exiting the Gulf will appear." Like that idea!

- Notre Dame announces that any family making less than $150,000 a year will pay zero tuition.

College Football Thoughts

More college football thoughts and observations as we head into the offseason. Mostly about Indiana and Notre Dame but that's just the way it worked out.

Was having these thoughts anyway and figured may as well jot them down and post on Substack.

Notre Dame Got Screwed

No other way to describe what ESPN and the SEC did to the Fighting Irish.

Follow the money. Who profits from Alabama being included in the field but not Notre Dame? The SEC and ESPN. Their greed has been exposed and their conflict of interest laid bare for the world to see.

Have my thoughts on the situation up on Substack.

Tonight's College Football Game

I bet Ohio State to win the championship a long time ago but I'll be rooting for the Fighting Irish. Either way - I win.

Stuff I found interesting or amusing and thought I'd share.

-  Ryan Holiday's 38 rules for reading

- Hard to argue with Ron DeSantis's reasoning. Good for him.

- Do we love college football too much?

- Neuralink's Blindsight device seems pretty amazing. Wonder if it can later be applied to people who lose their sight due ti diabetes or glaucoma?

Stuff I found interesting or amusing and thought I'd share.

- Noah Smith on how BRICS is not a real threat to the US. Don't disagree with what he wrote but I'd also warn against overlooking 50% of the world's population and oil production at your own peril. Was also unaware that BRICS was originally a creation of Goldman Sachs.

- Interesting: AI vs human performance

- The Tail End by Tim Urban. Interesting perspective (from 2015 but new to me)

- Wow! ND is a massive brand.

Stuff I found interesting or amusing and thought I'd share.

- Tonga eruption blasted unprecedented amount of water into atmosphere. "The sheer amount of water injected into the stratosphere was likely only possible because the underwater volcano's caldera."

- Northwestern expected to add Chip Holtz to staff on a temporary basis. Calling Skip Holtz a veteran coach makes me feel old.

- Evidence of Biden Burisma corruption is overwhelming. File under - no kidding.

- This may interest only me but Notre Dame just signed huge deal to remain with Under Armour.

College Football Thoughts

A few thoughts and observations about the state of college football after Saturday's great slate of games.

Here's how I'd rank the current Top 4 Playoff teams:

  1. Georgia
  2. Ohio State
  3. Michigan
  4. TCU
If TCU remains unbeaten and is the Big 12 champ - they have to be in. Michigan and Ohio State play each other so one of them will be at least a one-loss team come playoff time. If The SEC comes down to LSU (big win over Alabama Saturday) vs Georgia and LSU wins - does that slot Georgia as the top one-loss team in the country over the loser of Michigan/Ohio State? Does a 2-loss LSU make the playoffs as the SEC champ? Things are going to get interesting.

Notre Dame had a wire-to-wire beatdown of Clemson on Saturday which should eliminate the ACC from the playoffs. Funny but now both the Big 10 and the SEC are rooting for the Fighting Irish. Ohio State's biggest non-conference win is against Notre Dame and they need that to pad the resume. The Irish basically single-handedly eliminated the ACC (wins over Clemson, Syracuse, and North Carolina). If they win out - including the regular season ending game vs USC - they could also help eliminate the Pac 12 from the playoffs. Oregon's crushing loss to Georgia to start the season will be held against them as a one-loss team and USC is the next best option for the Pac 12.  But not if they lose to Notre Dame.

(As an aside - I bet Notre Dame's season over total of 8.5 wins so I'll be rooting for them to win their last 3 games to finish 9-3.)

This past Saturday's great slate is the best advertisement for on campus playoff games when the playoffs get expanded to 12 teams.

Amazon's $1 Billion Thursday Night Football Deal Is Off To Good Start

Interesting look at how Amazon's 11-year $11 billion Thursday Night Football deal is paying off.

Amazon says the first TNF game resulted in more Prime membership signups during a 3-hour period than any time in the company's history, including Prime Day, Black Friday, and Cyber Monday.

The revenue from commercials during the broadcast go a long way for paying the $1 billion per year pricetag but the $139 yearly Prime subscription fees and the fact that Prime members spend on average $1,400 per year on Amazon is the real cherry on top.

I've long advocated that Amazon make a similar deal with Notre Dame once the Fighting Irish's contract is up with NBC. They would have similar success for similar reasons if they inked that deal.
