Richard Feynman and Elmore Leonard - Both Cooler Than Cool

"You get used to it, that was all. You made up your mind you were going to be good at it and not panic. It was something you developed in your mind, a coolness. No cooler than cool... It was a coldness you had to develop. The pro with ice water in his veins." - Elmore Leonard

Two weeks ago I finished a book and was looking through my bookshelves for a replacement. I happened upon the Richard Feynman memoir Surely You're Joking, Mr. Feynman and realized I had been thinking of the book recently but haven't read it in a while. So I started re-reading it.

Then the next day at 5:30 PM the power went out and soon it got too dark to read. That's when I picked up my backlit Kindle and saw Cooler than Cool the Elmore Leonard biography. So I started re-reading that too. The power came back about 7:00 PM the next day but I kept at both books.

It occurred to me that both men were "cooler than cool" and worth emulating - if not for their particular skills for their outlooks on life.

"I used to cross the United States in my automobile every summer, trying to make it to the Pacific Ocean. But, for various reasons, I would always get stuck somewhere - usually in Las Vegas." - Richard Feynman

Happy 96th Birthday to Clint Eastwood

Today is Clint's birthday (he turns 96 today - can you believe that?). Here are what I consider his Top 5 movies.

1. Unforgiven
2. The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly
3. Dirty Harry
4. Fistful of Dollars
5. (tie) Kelly's Heroes (tie) Where Eagles Dare (tie) Outlaw Josey Wales

Really liked Grand Torino but the ones I picked were classics. Also liked The Eiger Sanction but the book was better. The other Dirty Harry films didn't make the list because that character became cartoonish as it went along. Used to have The Outlaw Josey Wales as my number one but Sondra Locke's presence really detracts from the film.

News out of Texas is that not only was QB Brent Sorsby a compulsive gambler but he also was not trying to innocently turn his life around - he got caught and may have been in full damage control mode. This is not looking good for Texas Tech. No wonder they seem so anxious to change the story to a rivalry against the Texas Longhorns.

Richard Feynman

Today would have been Richard Feynman's birthday. This was of course a physics Nobel Prize winner and American original who took a year off to study biology while at Cal Tech and almost solved the riddle of the DNA double helix before Watson and Crick did - and he would have too if his year "off" didn't run out.

Feynman was notoriously famous for working on problems like the structure of DNA and then just putting it aside in a file. His file cabinet is said to be chock full of such half-finished problems. I have long thought that a great use for AI would be to put this amazing computing power to work to solve these "files" for the benefit of mankind.

As always I recommend the book Surely You're Joking Mr. Feynman in his honor. Richard Feynman was a very interesting character and I enjoyed his "autobiography". I use the words in quotations because it was really more a collection of stories. Feynman, along with two others, won the Nobel Prize in 1965 for his work on quantum electrodynamics. But that's barely a blip in the book. In fact I don't think it is even mentioned until there were about 50-pages left in the book.

Feynman was a one-of-a-kind character. A man who was always curious and always learning. As a kid he was interested in how radios worked and soon became the go-to person for adults to see to get their radios fixed (back in the days before TV). While working on the Manhattan Project he became interested in becoming a safe cracker and soon became expert on that too. Drumming, Samba music, Portuguese, Japanese and painting became other interests of his. Can you see why Feynman was considered so unique?

I would also recommend the essay What Impossible Meant to Feynman. Often when I learn something new I'd find myself exclaiming "Impossible!"

Carlo Rovelli on the Size of the Planck Scale

"...if we enlarged a walnut shell until it becomes as big as the whole observable universe, we would still not see the Planck length. Even after being enormously magnified thus, it would still be a million times smaller than the actual walnut shell was before magnification. At this scale, space and time change their nature. They become something different; they become 'quantum space and time,' and understanding what this means is the problem."

Get the feeling President Trump might help end the war in Ukraine, remove the Iranian regime as a threat, and drain the swamp but some will still find fault like the way he combs his hair or talks. Such people are getting less and less credible by the day.

Knowledge

What is the road to knowledge is one of the most asked questions in life.

Have a new post up on Substack on what some have said about the importance of knowledge. I wanted to share and hope one or may take hold with you.

No one ever said it was an easy path but it’s one you need to follow - though each in their own way.

The Iranian war has now reached its desperate measures stage. The Iranian regime (whoever is left in charge) has ordered suicidal futile attacks on US destroyers by speedboats and is dumping oil into the sea because they have nowhere left to store it. These are signs that the war is near its end but beware of the regime - a cornered animal is often at its most dangerous.

Thursday Flotsam and Jetsam

NFL referees vote tonight on a new contract with the league. Assume they will accept the offer because truth be told NFL referees have it pretty good. Think all that talk about replacement refs was just a negotiating ploy although there's a chance it backfires because the refs may know it was a bluff. Nobody wants to see replacement refs.

Jordan Peterson on One of the Benefits to Listening

"By contrast, if you are called upon to summarize someone's position, so that the speaking person agrees with that summary, you may have to state the argument even more clearly and succinctly than the speaker has even yet managed. If you first give the devil his due, looking at his arguments from his perspective, you can (1) find value in them, and learn something in the process, or (2) hone your positions against them (if you still believe they are wrong) and strengthen your arguments further against challenge. This will make you much stronger."

A cease fire has been announced in Iran's strait of Hormuz to allow negotiations to continue. Part of me wonders if these cease fires are announced periodically just to give the US military more time to reload. Seems like that doesn't it?

Tuesday Flotsam and Jetsam

Have a new miscellaneous thoughts and observations post up on Substack.

Last night in NBA playoffs the Knicks destroyed the 76ers and left me thinking that losing the way the Celtics did in the first round may have been a blessing in disguise. Philly fans were happy to just finally beat Boston but New York fans gloating about winning two years in a row may have been insufferable.
