RIP Texas Dolly

Poker legend Doyle Brunson has passed away at 89 years of age. Doyle was a pioneer in poker and Brunson and his son Todd are the only father/son duo to have both won World Series of Poker bracelets.

Have a feeling many people will be playing 10-duece the next week or so in his honor. Time to break out Super System II to brush up on the poker wisdom Doyle bequeathed us. Can't wait to read all the great Texas Dolly stories that get told over the next few weeks. 

He was one of a kind. There will not be another.

Billy Mills Wins 1964 Olympic 10,000 Meter Gold

Track and Field distance races aren't usually that exciting but I agree with poker legend Doyle Brunson that Billy Mills winning the 1964 Olympic Gold in the 10,000 meter may be the exception. (Honestly I had never heard of Billy Mills until Doyle mentioned this as one of the great forgotten moments in sports.)

Is it me or do all the "Stephen Drew will add depth to the Red Sox" stories you are seeing smack of desperation leaking by Scott Boras. It's like Stephen Drew is slowly morphing into Richard Gere in An Officer and a Gentleman, "I got no where else to go!" I liked Stephen Drew last year but I hope that ship has sailed... Nice article on poker Godfather Doyle Brunson... Would Dolph Lundgren have been a star if he went by Adolph Lundgren instead?... This is me when I drank Zima... When Barack Obama took office there were 37.9 million Americans living in poverty. Today there is 47.1 million - yet you won't see any stories about homelessness until a Republican is once again in the White House... Heh heh - Far Side comics in real life... If Bill Belichick played Ode to Joy on the accordion at his next press conference it would break the Internet... This week I vow to use the phrase, "Good day my jumentous fellow" and smile when saying it. Jumentous means "smelling like horse urine" but if you smile people will take it as a compliment...

WSOP Day 1A

Pauly has a post up about day 1A at the World Series of Poker. As always a very interesting read. I probably could have done without the image planted in my mind of Wayne Gretzky getting a blowjob (I know I'll end up having a dream where the Great One is making the "O" face and then suddenly breaks out singing O' Canada). If this doesn't make sense to you - I should mention that Janet Jones Gretzky busted out of the tournament in day 1A.

Pauly mentioning that Doyle Brunson and Johnny Chan busted out in Day 1A reminded me of a prop bet they had over at Bodog. Basically it was a "last longest" bet among the former Main Event Champions. I thought Brunson and Chan were bad bets (I forget their odds) because people would be gunning for the right to say they busted out these famous poker players. Besides Brunson and Chan probably would prefer to make money on side cash games than sit through the circus that the Main Event has become. Chris Moneymaker, Jamie Gold and Robert Varkoni are sucker bets. Lightning won't strike twice for those guys. Greg Raymer and Joe Hachem are good bets but my money would have been on Juan Carlos Mortensen (I think he went off at 3-1).

Hey - speaking of Doyle Brunson - what ever happened to those stock manipulation charges in regard to his supposed take-over of the World Poker Tour?

Pauly mentioned Bobby "the Owl" Baldwin in his post. This was a name I was not familiar with but am now fascinated with. I just ordered his book Tales Out of Tulsa but I am more interested in reading his biography (maybe Pauly or Michael Lewis could write it). Those are the types of books I love to read.
