Priests Playing Poker

The sins associated with playing cards are nothing new. The Synod of 1404 forbade card-playing by the clergy and in 1423 Saint Bernard called for the faithful to go home, get their playing cards and burn them right in the public square outside of Saint Peter's in the Vatican.

I wonder if that ruling against clergy playing cards has ever been rescinded?  Personally I can't ever recall seeing a priest at a poker table. And now I really want a version of Dogs Playing Cards but with priests instead.

Idea for a New TV Show

Combine the craziness for Sports Talk Radio and Poker on TV. Here's the format:

  • Instead of an appearance fee - five players from a combination of sports writers / former pro athletes / local celebrities get $250 (or whatever the show's producers can afford) in poker chips
  • The game is No Limit Texas Hold 'Em
  • You have a dealer who is also the show's moderator/host
  • The show lasts 1 or 2 hours and with each hand dealt the dealer/moderator throws out a quick topic of discussion
  • Each player has say 10-15 seconds to throw out their take on the subject AND decide whether to bet or drop
  • The winner of the hand gets an extra 15 seconds on the topic
  • At the end the show - the players get to keep their chips and if they bust out - the player gets nothing, nada, zilch.
How could this format fail. You could even have a Tournament of Champions. (BTW - I reserve all rights to the idea)

RIP Texas Dolly

Poker legend Doyle Brunson has passed away at 89 years of age. Doyle was a pioneer in poker and Brunson and his son Todd are the only father/son duo to have both won World Series of Poker bracelets.

Have a feeling many people will be playing 10-duece the next week or so in his honor. Time to break out Super System II to brush up on the poker wisdom Doyle bequeathed us. Can't wait to read all the great Texas Dolly stories that get told over the next few weeks.

He was one of a kind. There will not be another.

- Gabe Kaplan to retire as High Stakes Poker commentator. What a versatile guy. Standup comedian, TV star, expert poker player, and perhaps the best poker commentator ever. Also was a heck of a pick-up basketball player when younger.

Poker and Crypto and House Money

Interesting article on the similarities between the poker boom and the crypto explosion and how "the house money effect" comes into play.

"The house money effect is a theory used to explain the tendency of investors to take greater risk when reinvesting profit earned through investing than they would when investing  their savings or wages."

Can attest that this is 100% true. When playing poker with my buddies - if I'm up I often go into ATC (any two cards) mode. I know it's technically bad poker but it also makes me unpredictable. For me it adds an extra level of enjoyment maybe because of the risk of playing bad hands (including "the hammer" - 7-2 off-suit).

It would be interesting to look back on some of those grinders who became online poker millionaires and how they are doing financially today. It should also be noted that the federal government ended the online poker boom through legislation known as Black Friday in the poker world. Could there be a Black Friday coming in the crypto world? And are people prepared for it?

Flotsam and Jetsam

Miscellaneous thoughts and observations.

Did you ever start reading a book and suddenly realize, "Wait I've read this before." Just had that experience with James Ellroy's LA Confidential. Only once the book was in my hands did I realize I had already read it (remembered reading The Black Dahlia but forgot I read this one too)... Porn Stache Donald Trump would be a good name for a lesbian Gordon Lightfoot cover band... Once I got a hundred pages into a biography of Jack Dempsey before realizing I had already that book... Not sure about you but I find myself actively avoiding any news or articles about Afghanistan because they are just making me sad and upset. It's a mental health thing. My condolences to anyone who served there or who had family members who did. This must be an extremely bitter pill to swallow... Having said that I feel I must comment on people noting that Joe Biden saying "the buck stops here" during his Afghanistan speech doesn't mean what he thinks it means. Most people get this wrong. As Truman meant it - it is a poker term meaning the dealer's "buck" (aka puck) stops here. That meant it was Truman's turn to pick a game (aka strategy or policy) and he wasn't going to shy away from that responsibility and pass the deal. Sadly the way Biden is going if he does pick a game I'm afraid it will be "Crazy Eights" while all the other world leaders are playing poker...

- LHC creates matter from light

- An example of why Mike Sexton was so important to poker

- The Washington Post used to be upheld as one of the examples of journalism at its best. Now they are an agenda driven bunch of hacks which their treatment of Clay Travis is just the latest example of. They've completely thrown away their integrity and for what?

- Heh Heh

- Is sunscreen bad for you? I've cut way back on my use of sunscreen for many of the reasons raised in the article.

Stuff I found interesting or amusing and thought I'd share.

- Legendary poker player and announcer Mike Sexton has passed away. Sexton was roundly regarded as one of the nicest persons in poker.

- Still amazed that the Peace Deal between Sebia and Kosovo isn't a bigger story.

- The first successfully cloned endangered Przewalski's horse was born at the San Diego Zoo. For many this brings thoughts of Jurassic Park, others wonder about bringing back the passenger pigeon. Me? I wonder about using this method to clone Ted Williams.

- NFL, NFLPA announce a 1-hour special on social justice to be aired on NBC. Imagine the ratings for this will be great (sarcasm off). Am curious if they will have commercials because any advertisers are bound to face some backlash.

- Still awesome life advice.

- Reminder it was just 3-years ago the NBA was mandating that all players and coaches stand for the anthem. They understood the damage it could do to TV ratings and revenue.

Flotsam and Jetsam

Miscellaneous thoughts and observations.

There should be a remake of the TV show Knight Rider but starring Elon Musk. I mean the guy already has fleets of self-driving cars and frigging spaceships. Think of the possibilities!... Scott Peterson was sentenced to death in 2004 for killing his wife Laci. He's still on death row. Get it over with already!... The Mesopotamian god of the moon was called Sin which is appropriate since most "sins" occur at night... "'No' is often a decision, frequently temporary, to maintain the status quo." - Chris Voss... I imagine that casino chips for poker and table games must be a nightmare for trying to utilize proper sanitation methods in the face of the Wuhan and other viruses. Players wearing mandatory surgical gloves maybe?... Knowing that Neil Diamond wrote Sweet Caroline about prepubescent Caroline Kennedy - his song Girl You'll Be a Woman Soon is even more creepy... Guessing that right about now getting back those rights to Australian Rules Football is looking pretty good to ESPN... An old joke said that microbiologists were easy to spot. They were the ones who washed their hands before and after they went to the bathroom. Now we're all microbiologists...
