Flotsam and Jetsam

Miscellaneous thoughts and observations.

How the world will end according to my latest fever dream - someone will bet Elon Musk that he can't boil the oceans... Have to think with the move of many companies to work from home flexibility and with new broadband sources like SpaceX's Starlink service I believe that many people may be adopting a van life / RV lifestyle in the not too distant future... The perfect counter programming for the All-Star game would be a UFC title card held in Atlanta that same night. Dana White could even have former President Trump as his guest of honor. That event's TV ratings would dwarf baseball's. Only problem is the UFC just signed a big contract with ESPN and ESPN is broadcasting the All-Star game... Speaking of the All-Star game - Joe Biden and Rob Manfred giving this guy a run for his money... Funny but 4-years ago the best basketball team in NYC was arguably the Harlem Globetrotters. The Knicks and the Nets have come a long way...

Dana White is a Hero

Dana White is a hero. His courage and resourcefulness saved his business.

"I'm not afraid of the media. Why should anyone listen to the media? Who are these people? What makes them experts? What have they ever accomplished?... It's easy to criticize from the sidelines when you risk nothing and do nothing." - Dana White

Dan Wetzel gets it - Dana White was right all along.

Flotsam and Jetsam

Miscellaneous thoughts and observations.

The bandwagon of people in New England clamoring for the Patriots to sign Cam Newton to a long-term deal is basically empty today after yesterday's awful performance. If Dallas or Washington offered anything in terms of a draft pick - I'd be fine with cutting bait and trading him.. Long been critical of the F-35 program. Recently though I'm starting to think the fighter may have turned a corner. If Trump is re-elected wouldn't be surprised if the cost overruns get under more control too... Had to mute Mark Teixeira on Twitter because of all the Depends ads. Normally I'm amused by Yankees' players pissing themselves but enough was enough... Can't wait until November 4th because then I'll finally be free of all the articles and posts about the importance of early voting... You could make the case that Khabib Nurmagomedov is the greatest MMA fighter of all-time.  I certainly would ague otherwise. Will be interesting to see of Khabib remains retired...

Flotsam and Jetsam

 Miscellaneous thoughts and observations.

Not for nothing but under Dana White the UFC has become the most inclusive sport on the planet. Athletes of all colors from various nations are on almost every fight card. There's openly gay fighters and its treated as no big deal. And it is not unusual for women fighters to be the main event. Name another sport that's more inclusive... This is me on an average Sunday morning... Reportedly only 20% of NBA players are registered voters. Even if you bump that number up to account for foreign players who cannot vote in US elections, less than 50% of NBA players are registered to vote. That makes all of their "get out the vote" efforts ring a little hollow - doesn't it?... 5 ways to help independent bookstores during the lockdown... The word "gullet" doesn't get used enough. "Shut your gullet." "He keeps shoveling food down his gullet." Etc... If Mark Cuban really was supportive of racial equality in this country he'd forego his white privilege and sell the Dallas Mavericks to a black owner. Sorry but if Cuban really wants to go by the woke playbook those are the rules...

- One month later, sports remain shut down. An inventory of where the different pro leagues (and I include college football as a pro league) stand. I think both college and NFL schedules should be published and if the home team cannot host an event because of lockdowns then that team simply takes an "L" and forfeits.

Flotsam and Jetsam

Miscellaneous thoughts and observations..

Watched the first ten minutes of the Aaron Hernandez documentary on Netflix then I turned it off because why should I waste my time on that piece of shit. Especially as it seemed that the documentary was somehow going to make excuses for Hernandez's behavior... "Page 3 of 2" would be a good name for a blog... "What's true isn't new and what's new isn't true" a phrase from a recent Eric Weinstein Portal podcast that really made me think... Maybe the best synopsis of the McGregor / Cerrone fight last night... What are the odds that the Astros Jose Altuve leads MLB in getting hit by a pitch next season. I'd like to bet on that... Tobacco Cologne would be a good name for a band or an actual joke product you could give to the smoker in your life... What ever happened to the Dreamers? Have the Democrats completely abandoned the Dream Act as an issue? Wasn't it an upmost priority just a little while ago?... "It is capitalism that pulled billions out of poverty. Flotsam and Jetsam

Miscellaneous thoughts and observations.

Donald Trump is now the only sitting President to attend a UFC event. Richard Nixon was the only sitting President to attend a Kentucky Derby... Think this picture encapsulates how much fun this Boston Celtics team is to root for (versus last year's team which was almost a burden to root for)... When I see all those Baker Mayfield commercials on TV I am reminded that a young just off a Super Bowl win Tom Brady had lots of offers to do commercials but he was very selective. And Brady always made sure to include either his offensive linemen or receivers in the commercials he chose to do. Baker Mayfield is no Tom Brady (on many levels)... Heh Heh... There's been some controversy over the extent Trump was cheered or booed at the UFC event but that misses the point. Can you think of any Democrat running for President who would have elicited any reaction from a UFC crowd at all?... Man can Drew Brees bring the pre-game speech or what!...

Flotsam and Jetsam

Miscellaneous thoughts and observations.

Yesterday 1.5 million people turned out in Boston for the Patriots Super Bowl victory parade. I was not one of them. I went to the first Patriots' parade in 2002 but it was so cold that I watched most of the parade go by from inside a bar. Never went to another... I see this Julian Edelman t-shirt and all I can think of it Edelman's story would make a good "Santa: the Early Years" movie... Holy crap! Man is attacked by mountain lion - man kills mountain lion WITH HIS BARE HANDS! He choked the beast to death. Dana White should sign this guy up for the UFC!... Non-Recurring Phenomenon would be a good name for a movie studio (and a nice tribute to William Goldman),,,  "Learn the rules like a pro, so you can break them like an artist." - Pablo Picasso... Fighting a big cat on land is terrifying but after seeing these photos I'm thinking fighting one in the water might be even worse... Anthony Davis' dad says he doesn't want his son traded to Boston because the Celtics aren't loyal - pointing to their trade of Isaiah Thomas. Ten years ago Anthony Davis' dad would have used the excuse that he didn't want his son traded to the Celtics because Boston is a racist city. So I guess that's progress?...

UFC 229 and What Should Be Done

UFC 229 was one of the most entertaining fight cards the UFC has ever produced but the quality of the matches will forever be marred by the violence and near riot that broke out at the end of the McGregor-Khabib bout. The responsibility for these action lie completely with the Khabib camp and according to reports from Dana White the only reason there hasn't been arrests yet is because Conor McGregor declined to press charges.

Here's what I think should happen.

Dana White and the UFC should strip Khabib of his title and give him a 2-year ban from the UFC. The members of the Khabib camp that assaulted McGregor after the fight should be given lifetime bans from any future UFC event.

The Nevada State Athletic Commission should give Khabib a lifetime ban from ever fighting in Nevada again. And any other State commission should look critically at ever sanctioning any of his fights in the future. Buyer beware.

The Las Vegas police, despite Conor McGregor declining to press charges, should arrest Khabib and any of his camp involved for inciting to riot and any other charges they can come up with. They should also ask the UFC to hold Khabib's purse to pay for any damages that might have been incurred because of his camp's actions.

The State Department should consider revoking Khabib's passport. Permanently!

Khabib's acts should have repercussions and consequences.
