Richard Feynman

Today would have been Richard Feynman's birthday. This was of course a physics Nobel Prize winner and American original who took a year off to study biology while at Cal Tech and almost solved the riddle of the DNA double helix before Watson and Crick did - and he would have too if his year "off" didn't run out.

Feynman was notoriously famous for working on problems like the structure of DNA and then just putting it aside in a file. His file cabinet is said to be chock full of such half-finished problems. I have long thought that a great use for AI would be to put this amazing computing power to work to solve these "files" for the benefit of mankind.

As always I recommend the book Surely You're Joking Mr. Feynman in his honor. Richard Feynman was a very interesting character and I enjoyed his "autobiography". I use the words in quotations because it was really more a collection of stories. Feynman, along with two others, won the Nobel Prize in 1965 for his work on quantum electrodynamics. But that's barely a blip in the book. In fact I don't think it is even mentioned until there were about 50-pages left in the book.

Feynman was a one-of-a-kind character. A man who was always curious and always learning. As a kid he was interested in how radios worked and soon became the go-to person for adults to see to get their radios fixed (back in the days before TV). While working on the Manhattan Project he became interested in becoming a safe cracker and soon became expert on that too. Drumming, Samba music, Portuguese, Japanese and painting became other interests of his. Can you see why Feynman was considered so unique?

I would also recommend the essay What Impossible Meant to Feynman. Often when I learn something new I'd find myself exclaiming "Impossible!"

"...if we enlarged a walnut shell until it becomes as big as the whole observable universe, we would still not see the Planck length. Even after being enormously magnified thus, it would still be a million times smaller than the actual walnut shell was before magnification. At this scale, space and time change their nature. They become something different; they become 'quantum space and time,' and understanding what this means is the problem."

"By contrast, if you are called upon to summarize someone's position, so that the speaking person agrees with that summary, you may have to state the argument even more clearly and succinctly than the speaker has even yet managed. If you first give the devil his due, looking at his arguments from his perspective, you can (1) find value in them, and learn something in the process, or (2) hone your positions against them (if you still believe they are wrong) and strengthen your arguments further against challenge. This will make you much stronger."

Life Advice

"A learning experience is one of those things that say, 'You know that thing you just did? Don't do that." - Douglas Adams

I think living a good life can be boiled down to three simple rules.

1. First simply try to live life by the Golden Rule - treat others as you'd want them to treat you.

2. Try to make good decisions in life. For the most part you know instinctively a good choice from a bad choice. Try to make good choices.

3. You will make some bad choices - it's unavoidable. However when you do - treat your bad choice as a learning experience and take the words of Douglas Adams to heart and try not to make the same mistake twice.

Rinse, lather, repeat. A good life doesn't need to be complicated.

Monday Flotsam and Jetsam

Have anew miscellaneous thoughts and observations post up on Substack.

Ronald Reagan's favorables were polling pretty poorly until he was shot by John Hinkley and Reagan's grace and humor made the public love him. Wonder if President Trump's reaction to the WHCD shooter may do the same for Trump? By not blaming the press he is making them take any swipes at him seem petty and small. Just saying.

Stuff I found interesting or amusing and thought I'd share.

- Jonathan Turley on Liberal Democrats calling for saving democracy through bloodthirsty means. That's how we get events like last night. And they know it!

- Donnie Wahlberg offered 50% of his salary if Boston Blue could be filmed in Boston but it was too expensive. So you're seeing Toronto instead.

- What's next for Red Sox after firing Alex Cora.

- Take the 52-week Black and White film challenge. Seen a number of these films multiple times and some have already been remade in color. Don't think it would work for all films especially comedies but don't be surprised to see some re-makes come out.

Sunday Flotsam and Jetsam

Have a new miscellaneous thoughts and observations post up on Substack.

The big news of the day was of an active shooter at the White House Correspondents Dinner and the Red Sox firing coach Alex Cora. In my opinion the WHCD "nerd prom" should be cancelled completely - it has long outlived its usefulness - and Boston owner John Henry should sell the team. Don't think I'm alone in holding these opinions.

- Jonathan Turley on the legality of the redistricting map voted for by Virginia. Reminder the voters of Virginia also voted to secede from the Union - ask Robert E. Lee if that vote was overturned.

- How to keep your brain sharp.

- Interesting draft day story.

Saturday Flotsam and Jetsam

Have a new miscellaneous thoughts and observations post up on Substack.

Didn't watch any of last night's Day 2 of the NFL Draft. A list of who picked who will be available this morning and you really won't know if the pick was successful until once they players start seeing game action in the fall. Better spent that time watching the Celtics beat the 76ers.

Friday Flotsam and Jetsam

Have a new miscellaneous thoughts and observations post up on Substack.

The Patriots moved up from the 31st pick in the NFL draft to the 28th to pick OT Caleb Lomu of Utah who was rated as the last of the first round caliber tackles in the draft before the prospects drop off quite a bit. I did not stay up for the pick but must have gone to bed slightly just before it. Hard to get too excited about a potential swing tackle anyway.

College Football Thought

Some offseason college football thoughts and observations with the possible expansion of the playoff field and the proposed 5 for 5 eligibility getting the lion's share of the attention.

Was having these thoughts anyway and figured I may as well jot them down and share on Substack. I miss Mike Leach.

Thursday Flotsam and Jetsam

Have a new miscellaneous thoughts and observations post up on Substack.

Tonight is the first night of the NFL Draft and I hope your favorite team makes great picks. I won't be watching (I may check online to see who picked who). Though I remain staunchly against pre-draft mocks I still find myself listening to Todd McShay's podcast. That may be hypocritical but I find him entertaining and his pod is good to fall asleep to while I nap during the day.
