"I try not to speak about the charities and people I help, because I believe we can only truly be generous when we expect nothing in return." - Muhammad Ali

"You are going to die one day, and none of this is going to matter. So enjoy yourself. Do something positive. Project some love. Make someone happy. Laugh a little bit. Appreciate the moment. And do your work." - Naval Rivikant

How Cool Was Christopher Lee?

From the book, The Light's on at Signpost by George MacDonald Fraser:

Guy Hamilton told me a story which illustrates the kind of admiration which Christopher [Lee] attracts. Guy was directing him in the Bond movie, The Man with the Golden Gun, and the set was visited by Muhammad Ali, professing himself a devoted Lee fan, and requesting an audience. They were introduced, Ali assuring Christopher that he was his favorite movie star, and then he had added, "And I'm going to dedicate my next fight to you, too!"

This was taken as an extravagant compliment, no more - but sure enough, when Ali won his next fight (I've an idea it was the Rumble in the Jungle) and the ring was awash in fans, handlers, and journalists, the champion fought his way to the nearest TV camera and roared into the lens: "I won that fight for Christopher Lee!" Which, as Guy remarked, was not only a tribute to Christopher, but proved Ali was a man of his word.

You may be cool - but you'll never be as cool as Christopher Lee getting Muhammad Ali to dedicate one of the biggest fights of his career to him cool.

Quotes for Today

Some quotes I hope may resonate with you.

"Karma is just you, repeating your patterns, virtues, and flaws until you finally get what you deserve." - Naval Ravikant

"I have no responsibility to live up to what others expect of me. That's their mistake, not my failing." - Richard Feynman

"Somewhere, something incredible is waiting to be known." - Carl Sagan

"Free people make free choices. Free choices mean you get unequal outcomes. You can have freedom, or you can have equal outcomes. You can't have both." - Naval Ravikant

"People run in packs because they don't feel safe alone. I run alone because I don't feel safe in packs." - Muhammad Ali

"Those who lack the courage will always find a philosophy to justify it." - Albert Camus

Linky Links

Stuff I found interesting or amusing and thought I'd share.

- Interesting profile of Doug Stanhope.

- Muhammad Ali's son says dad would have hated 'racist' Black Lives Matter

- Reason's case against qualified immunity

- I wasn't familiar with the history of the "Hard Hat Riot."  Would not be surprised if shorty history repeats itself.

- Interesting Werner Herzog interview.

Flotsam and Jetsam

Miscellaneous thoughts and observations.

"You go to war with the army you have, not the army you might want or wish to have at a later time." - Donald Rumsfeld. I keep thinking of that quote whenever I see or hear people bemoaning the current choices for President and suggesting other alternatives... Oh the humanity! Covid-19 outbreak at Cruisin' Chubby's strip club in Wisconsin. Of course Covid-19 isn't the only virus these folks should be tested for... Having said the above that the choices in November will be either Donald Trump or Joe Biden there's a significant chance that the choice for Democrats may actually end up as Kamala Harris (or whoever Joe Biden picks as his VP candidate) if Joe Biden has to step aside because of his cognitive decline. But then that opens up a whole other can of worms... Heh Heh... Hiking Mount Wachusett in Central Mass with my daughter for Father's Day. Here's a nice article from Outside Magazine on suggested hikes in the White (New Hampshire) and Green (Vermont) Mountains... Happy Father's Day to all the dads out there...

Flotsam and Jetsam

Miscellaneous thoughts and observations.

Vote Orange? Isn't that a subliminal way of saying Vote Trump? No thanks I love America so that's why I'll vote for the Red Sox!... Puzzled by the phrase "I don't give a rats ass!" How much could a rats ass cost? And wouldn't it be at least more than a fiddler's fart?... Is Carlos Beltran a Hall of Famer? It is company like this that make me wonder... Now that Muhammad Ali has passed - is Hugh Hefner the biggest icon left from the 1970's?... Heh heh... Whe I listen to the announcers of the Stanley Cup Final on TV - ever time I hear the name "Letang" - I think that really sounds like the title of a ZZ Top song... Heh heh...

Linky Links

Stuff I found interesting or amusing and thought I'd share.

- Muhammad Ali and Andre the Giant meet and compare hand sizes. It makes you wonder if anyone could have stood up to Andre in the boxing ring. Just one solid blow from his hands would have ended most fights.

- Cool pool trick shots

- Formula E racing looks cool but not hearing the roar of the engine seems strange. Also not sure if I like the idea of having to switch cars when the batteries run low.

- Heh heh - epilepsy my cock

- Cool - soft robotic exosuits - faster please!

- Hannah Storm - what does the NFL stand for?

- The men with the red bandannas beat the USC Trojans last night. They "out-desired them."
