Flotsam and Jetsam

 Miscellaneous thoughts and observations.

Recently the very talented Mac Davis passed away. I have been meaning for a while to post about how well the movie North Dallas Forty (1979) holds up. Davis plays QB Seth Maxwell. Worth a watch if you have a chance... Might be a character defect on my part but I have a strong dislike of anyone who has thousands of songs available to choose from on a jukebox but still plays Hotel California... Funny because its true... "Depend on nobody. Take pride in yourself. And fight for everything. That's the way it has to be." - Bob Gibson. Baseball lost one of its brightest stars and America lost one of its fiercest competitors. Rest in peace Mr.Gibson... Think both the songs Eve of Destruction and Ball of Confusion are ripe for a 2020-based cover with accompanying 2020-themed videos. It would be both entertaining but also pretty cool...

Top 5 - Baseball Players from Nebraska

Here are who I consider the top 5 baseball players born in Nebraska.

1. Grover Cleveland Alexander - 373 wins - 6 times led the NL in wins
2. Sam Crawford - Hall of Fame outfielder - all-time leader in triples with 309
3. Bob Gibson - Hall of Fame pitcher - in 1968 he won both the NL Cy Young and MVP Awards
4. Wade Boggs - even 3,010 hits couldn't keep him from going bald or being a jerk.
5. Richie Ashburn - Hall of Fame outfielder

That's a pretty good showing for the state of Nebraska. Five Hall of Famers.

Nebraska also had one of the players with the most interesting name - Mysterious Walker. I tried to find out how Frederick Walker got his nickname but alas - its a mystery.

Speaking of interesting names - Joba Chamberlain is also from Nebraska. If you haven't already read this article on Joba's father Harlan - do yourself and read it. One of the best written pieces I've seen this year.
