"After 1932, New Zealand, Japan, Greece, Romania, Chile, Denmark, Finland, and Sweden began seeing industrial production levels rise again - but not the United States...
The big question about the American depression is not whether war with Germany and Japan ended it. It is why the Depression lasted until that war. From 1929 to 1940, from Hoover to Roosevelt, government helped to make the Depression Great...
There remains a question. If so much of the New Deal hurt the economy, why did Roosevelt win reelection three times? Why, especially, the landslide of 1936? In the case of the third and fourth Roosevelt terms the answer is clear: the threat of war, and war itself."
Turns out the only thing we had to fear was war.

Reportedly the Senate will vote today on the Protect College Sports Act. On the fence about the measure but did see an ad that claimed the college sports is out of hand and Congress needs to step in. "Socrates' technique was to make his interlocutor, who started with a thesis, agree to a series of statements, then proceed to show him how the statements he agreed to are inconsistent with the original thesis, thus establishing he has no clue as to what he was talking about. Socrates used it mostly to show people how lacking in clarity they were in their thoughts, how little they knew about the concepts they used routinely - and the need for philosophy to elucidate these concepts."
This helped clarify how the Socratic method works but in Taleb's words Fat Tony then eviscerates Socrates. I tended to agree with Fat Tony. Which perhaps was Taleb's objective.

President Trump is scheduled to be at today's Texas at Tennessee game. There's no doubt the man loves football. "Authors, artists, and even philosophers are much better off having a vey small number of fanatics behind them than a large number of people who appreciate their work. The number of people who dislike the work don't count - there is no such thing as the opposite of not buying your book, or the equivalent of losing points in a soccer game, and this absence of negative domain for book sales provides the author with a measure of optionality."

"With personal risk, you can easily barbell yourself by removing the chances of ruin in any area. I am personally completely paranoid about certain risks, then really aggressive with others. The rules are: no smoking, no sugar (particularly fructose), no motorcycles, no bicycles in town or more generally outside a traffic free area such as the Sahara desert, no mixing with the Eastern European mafia, and no getting on a plane not flown by a professional pilot (unless there is a co-pilot). Outside of these I can take all manner of professional and personal risks, particularly those in which there is no risk of terminal injury...
So take for now that a barbell strategy with respect to randomness results in achieving antifragility thanks to the mitigation of fragility, the clipping of downside risks of harm - reduced pain from adverse events, while keeping the benefits of potential gains."
