Boston Bruins

It's been more than two weeks since the Boston Bruins lost the deciding game 7 against the Florida Panthers. To say that the series loss shocked and depressed Boston fans would be an understatement (myself included). You have to understand that any Bruins season that ends before the anniversary of Bobby Orr's iconic goal (May 10, 1970) is considered a failure. This season even more so because Boston had set the NHL record for success in the regular season and were the top ranked team in the playoffs. 

It should be remembered, though, that great things were not expected of this team before the season started. They were a 25-1 long shot to win the Stanley Cup before the first puck was dropped in the season. They were a long shot for a reason. New coach, and big questions on both the goaltending and blue line fronts. These expected deficiencies did not rear their heads during the regular season. In fact the Bruins had the best goaltending in the league. It was in the first round of the playoffs that these deficiencies made their presence known and now hockey fans in Boston are forced to watch other cities strive for the cup.

What saddens me the most is that this was no way for Captain Patrice Bergeron to end his Hall of Fame career. If he does retire, he'll do so as the reigning Selke Award winner as the top defensive forward in the NHL. Basically still at the top of his game. Bergeron is one of the nicest people in all of sports and I'll be sad to see him go if he does decide to hang up his skates.

Did you know that the Stanley Cup was the result of Arthur and Algy Stanley asking their father, Lord Stanley, for a trophy to award to the champions of the Amateur Hockey Association in Montreal? The silver cup only cost $48.67 and was first awarded in 1893.

The first “Stanley Cup” tournament was held in 1894. Lord Stanley never actually attended any of the Stanley Cup hockey games.

Seeing the victorious team skate the Stanley Cup around the ice starting with the team captain is one of my favorite traditions in all of sports. The pure joy on the face of each player as they hoist the Cup always puts a smile on my face no matter the team. And keep in mind this only happens after the traditional handshake line against the vanquished foe - another of my favorite traditions... Interesting - how the NCAA v Alston ruling effects college athlete "loss of value" insurance. Big schools will now insure top players for millions giving additional incentive for players to stay in school. Which in turn with help that school's marketability... Just a thought but with the NCAA v Alston Supreme Court ruling and NIL payments happening left and right - what is the reason or justification for college sports remaining non-taxable? Think that should change... Hockey players are the best (no inner dialogue whatsoever)...

Does anyone seriously believe that Jeffrey Epstein would have been arrested if Hillary won the 2016 election? Seriously?... After the Civil War Robert E. Lee asked Congress for a pardon. It was never given... The future of grocery stores?... I agree that the US men's and women's soccer teams should be paid the same. I know the men's World Cup generates billions in revenues while the women's World Cup's revenue is measured in millions but that's worldwide. In the US the interest in the two teams is about equal and so should be the pay... But while we're at it - the Women's World Cup Finals generated an overnight TV rating of 10.0. How about we pay the winning team of any college football bowl game that generates a 10.0 rating or better the same as the US women's team just got paid? Where's the social justice activism for something like that?... OK if we're being honest the reason the Boston Bruins made the Stanley Cup Final this season is because the Tampa Bay Lightning shit the bed in the playoffs. Doubt that will happen two years in a row... Rest in peace Ross Perot. Running as an Independent may have cost George H.W. Bush a second term and gave the world Bill Clinton but Perot did a lot for veterans and much of his charitable work was done anonymously...

Congrats to the Blues from a Bruins Fan

First off let me say congratulations to the St Louis Blues and all the Blues fans. It was a well earned game seven victory. A truly historic Stanley Cup playoffs run for a franchise that had never tasted the fruit of hoisting the Cup.

I could say I have no idea of the joy Blues fans are feeling right now but I do know that joy. It was the same joy Boston fans felt after the Patriots won an equally improbable championship in 2001. Ironically enough at the expense of the Saint Louis Rams. Poetic justice? I'm sure many in St. Louis would say yes.

Secondly let me say that I am writing this fresh off the loss. The game seven alcohol is still in my veins and the smell of the cigar I smoked watching the game is still seeped in my clothes and breath. I am raw but lucid.

People across the nation say that Boston fans were greedy wanting to have the championships of three major sports at the same time. But the players on the Bruins bench did not get Patriots championship rings this week. Most of them were also not here in 2011 when the Bruins last won the Cup. I feel for them.

Especially I feel for Tuukka Rask who remains in my opinion - nay in fact - the best goalie in Boston Bruins history. Also for Zdano Chara who has the heart and class twice that of any normal human yet remains wildly unappreciated by so many Bruins fans. Despite being the captain of that 2011 championship team.

Blues fans enjoy tonight. Call in sick tomorrow. Cancel all plans to attend your parade.

The Bruins got absolutely SCREWED by the NHL and the referees last night. No two ways about it. Absolutely SCREWED... My feelings exactly after the game... Random Bruins thought not involving referees - if Cam Neely were a football player he would have been Rob Gronkowski. And vice versa... This is sooo good... Here's my solution to the Democratic Party having too many candidates for the Presidential debates - add Voldemort to the polls and any candidate who cannot poll better than He Who Must Not Be Named is eliminated from participating... Learned a new word yesterday - palimpsest. It was in a book I was reading and I didn't recognize it. Learning a new word makes me happy. It's the little things in life... Such an awesome photo by Steve Biro...

So the Boston Bruins are going to the Stanley Cup finals and last night right after the game I checked for ticket prices for Game 1. Tickets start at $549 per with the best seats going for $2,300 each. Guess I'll be watching the finals from a bar (as usual)... I am convinced that Irish Car Bombs were invented by a bartender who hated gullible young people. What a terrible drink choice... Many fingers of blame are being pointed for the disappointing season turned in by the Boston Celtics but lost in many of the discussions is the awful "C us Rise" motto they tried foisting on the fans. Let's hope that motto is tossed into the dustbin of history... "Lillies that fester smell far worse than weeds." - Shakespeare... Speaking of lillies that fester - statistically Kyrie Irving had the best season of his career yet the Celtics only finished 4th in the Eastern Conference. Pretty sure Boston could finish 4th (or better) without him. Now firmly in the hope Kyrie packs his bags and leaves camp... You can go to jail for renting a car from Hertz. I crossed them off the list of companies I'll do business with long ago... There are 3-month old babies in New England who have never known the joy of a championship parade. Won't someone please think of the children? Go Bruins!...

Now that Muhammad Ali has passed - is Hugh Hefner the biggest icon left from the 1970's?... Heh heh... Whe I listen to the announcers of the Stanley Cup Final on TV - ever time I hear the name "Letang" - I think that really sounds like the title of a ZZ Top song... Heh heh...
