- An oral history of Patriot's Day 2013. This is indeed our fucking city! Never thought about how Andrew bailey's blown save that day may have saved some people's lives. Great job by Tim Britton.
- A urine test to spot cancer? Yes please!
- 3-D printed house goes up in a day and costs $10,000.
- Remembering Harry the Hat - an appreciation of Harry Anderson
- Hipster Ninja Bats
- Heh Heh
- Recovering valuable metals from used electronics may be cheaper than mining for these metals in the first place.

The New Patriots Day?
April 16th really should be a holiday in the New England states. The date is both the anniversary of Tom Brady being drafted by the Patriots in the 6th round of the 2000 NFL draft and Bill Belichick's birthday (today's his 64th). Easily could be a holiday.
Problem is Patriots' Day is already a holiday in Massachusetts which is celebrated since 1969 on the third Monday in April. The holiday is supposed to celebrate the anniversary of the Battles of Lexington and Concord but that anniversary is technically the 19th of April. Locally this holiday is more known as Marathon Monday as it is the day the Boston Marathon is run (and the Red Sox play a morning game at Fenway).
There should be a way to incorporate Brady and Belichick especially since every once and a while the existing holiday will fall on the 16th anyway.

Flotsam and Jetsam
Miscellaneous thoughts and observations.
Two very interesting pairings this past weekend. You had the Mariano Rivera and Joba Chamberlain story and then Tiger Woods vs Sergio Garcia story-line at TPC Sawgrass. In both cases the younger player came off as bit of an ass... "Give us just the audio feed from Erin Andrews" said no TV producer ever... I read the subtext to this Dan Shaughnessy rebuttle by Red Sox part-owner Tom Werner as "I gave your daughter a job in Hollywood you ungrateful jerk"... God bless the Richard family. I cannot image the pain and grief they must shoulder every day... I still say that Tim Tebow would be a useful back-up to the Patriots. Tom Brady likes those one-yard goal-line plunges too much. He's getting older and there's no reason to risk him in those situations when you could have a guy like Tebow... Part of me thinks the Westboro Baptist Church is just some real elaborate hoax being pulled off by an not-dead Andy Kaufman... Playing off the success of ChristianMingle.com - I'd like to start a site ChristianDivorce.com. Jesus want you to separate!...

Stuff I found interesting and thought I'd share.
- Marc Maron in space? I'm a fan of WTF and will check out this show.
- Interesting profile of Billy Joel. I've never understood the idea that you had to like either Springsteen or Joel. I've always liked them both.
- Michael Shannon reading the insane sorority letter is why the Internets were invented.
- Good timeline explanation on how the Boston bombers were identified and caught.
- Interesting look into the year 1968. If you are into history - these articles are like catnip.

Boston
Two of the best writers from the Boston area also have two of the best explanations of what Monday means to people for whom Patriot's Day has been an important part of our fabric of life.
Jackie MacMullan's take.
Charlie Pierce's take.
I flew out of Logan on Tuesday morning and though the mood was somber - the flights were on time and things were somewhat back to normal. Which is a good thing. Maybe being in an airport made me think this but I can't help but believe that just like post 9/11 the whole plane full of passengers would rush anyone trying to take over a plane - next year the security at the Boston Marathon will be fine because the onlookers will make it so. Next year God help anyone carrying heavy backpacks who hesitate to answer when half-drunk Sully and Murph ask "Hey - what's in the bag?"

Flotsam and Jetsam
Miscellaneous thoughts and observations.
This week some journalist will drive the Boston Marathon route from Hopkington to Boston and they will not be able to beat Kenyan racer Geoffry Mutai's time. That will make a nice story for out of towners but locals know that's just the way the traffic works... President George W. Bush to host 100 km bike ride with wounded Iraq and Afghanistan veterans... The only excuse I can think of for Mike Leake was if he was rookie hazed into stealing ala Animal House Food King run... I saw that Gary Glitter was trending on Twitter and I really hoped it was because he was dead... This Jim Thome video promotional video for the Twins is awesome... There should be a word for when a guy wades into the ocean and the waves break over his groin and he finally feels OK to dive in. We all know that feeling but there is no word for it... Some of these ideas are pretty nifty... I agree that the trip on the screen by Garnett was the key to Ray Allen hitting game winning 3-pointer. As a Celtics fan though you felt they were going to win no matter what. Even if they lost you had the feeling they would still win the series. I imagine that Knick fans were feeling just the opposite. I also have to think Knick fans are thinking, "We traded away half the team for that?"... These were pretty amusing... Next week is bad for me. Jonas Brothers are in town.

Las Vegas

Off to Las Vegas for the rest of the week - so blogging will probably be light.
Yesterday I had a great day going into Boston to watch the Red Sox beat up on the Orioles in the Patriot's Day matinee. Patriot's Day is a Massachusetts holiday celebrating the battle of Lexington and Concord and "the shot heard round the world." These days its pretty much known as Marathon Monday.
