Hmm. Property tax says “you will own nothing.” The state claims the ultimate ownership and right of usurpation: if you don’t pay your property tax you lose ‘your’ property. Services provided by govt have to be paid for. Having said that, to me property tax is the most offensive and insulting way to do so. SP RN
Not pictured - sales tax. Have seen it proposed that all taxes simply be replaced by a 5% sales tax. The more you buy - the more taxes you pay. Everyone is treated equally.
Property tax may be the least harmful to growth, but it is the most evil of all taxes. We can debate the size of government, but some government is needed and some taxation is required to fund government services. I would much prefer a national sales tax. You can exempt groceries so it is not too regressive. Could also have a higher percentage on luxury items (leading to fight over what is considered a luxury).
Don't necessarily disagree but of two minds when it comes to property taxes. Some local services like roads, trash pick-up, police, fire, etc are needed and property tax seems the way to pay for them.
True. But which taxes damage ordinary people most? "Growth" is not a positive good in and of itself.
