Happy 75th Birthday to Mark Knopfler
What It Is - one of my favorites. Great example of why he's awesome at both guitar playing and as a lyricist.

Dire Straits - Sultans of Swing
Mark Knopfler explains how he came up with this iconic song. Said it before but Knopfler is the most underrated artist of the last 50-years.

Sultans of Swing
Saw this post at American Digest about Dire Straits signature song. As serendipity would have it - I recently saw this video explaining just how Mark Knopfler came up with this iconic song.
I've said it before but Mark Knopfler is perhaps the most underappreciated artist/musician of the past 60-years.

Flotsam and Jetsam
Miscellaneous thoughts and observations.
"You know what the issue is with this world? Everyone wants a magical solution for their problems, and everyone refuses to believe in magic." - Alice in Wonderland... If I could listen to just one artist on a desert island I think I would probably end up choosing between Mark Knopfler (Dire Straits and solo) or George Harrison (The Beatles and solo)... Convinced that the very best obituaries of Little Richard will mention his crucial role in the movie Mystery, Alaska... "Life is short, break the rules. Forgive quickly, kiss slowly. Love truly. Laugh uncontrollably and never regret anything that makes you smile." - Mark Twain (emphasis added for the tip I really want to take to heart)... Michael Jordan's Bulls were swept twice in the NBA playoffs by the great Larry Bird Celtic's teams of 86 and 87 (the 86 team is considered by many to be the greatest NBA teal of all-time). These were best of 5 series so the sweeps were just 3 games. If you put the 33-year old Jordan on those Bulls teams they don't get swept by the Celtics. And I still say if you put a 33-year old Jordan on the Cavs instead of LeBron James they don't get swept in 4-games in the 2018 NBA Finals by the Warriors... Happy Mother's Day to all the moms out there...

Boom Like That
I had McDonald's for breakfast and it put me in the mood for this song - the best fast food history song every written.

Flotsam and Jetsam - New York City Edition
Miscellaneous thoughts and observations from the Big Apple.
The New England Patriots theme song should be Mark Knopfler's "What It Is" that way when people ask what song it is you can say "It is 'What It Is'"... Velociraptors have ambitions too... The other night I was at a minor league game and for whatever reason I started wondering if people still use fungo bats? I can't recall the last time I saw someone use one. Or have infield practice for that matter. I feel like Larry King asking a question like this... Speaking of theme songs - I always thought this should be John Kruk's theme song... Later today I'll be spending time in the financial district down near Ground Zero. I'm disappointed that my schedule won't allow me time to walk the Brooklyn Bridge. I've always wanted to do that for some reason...

Top 5 Songs About Boxing
This post over at the Straight White Guy got me thinking. The Zevon song Boom Boom Mancini has always been mesmerizing to me but where does it stand in relation to the other songs about boxing? Here's my attempt at listing the top 5.
1. Hurricane by Bob Dylan
2. Boom Boom Mancini by Warren Zevon
3. Song for Sonny Liston by Mark Knopfler
4. The Boxer by Simon and Garfunkel (ummm... maybe a bit of a stretch despite the title of the song)
5. Black Superman - Muhammad Ali by Johnny Wakelin & The Kinshasa Band
Geez - there's not a whole lot of quality songs about boxing. Maybe I'm missing some songs but I struggled to fill out the list. I almost had to go with Eye of the Tiger by Survivor to fill out the list.

Heavy Fuel
Just a reminder of how great a guitarist Mark Knopfler is.
I've been running on heavy fuel for the past few weeks (if you know what I mean).

Morning Music
Here's this morning's listening (and watching I guess) music selections.
- Mark Knopfler - What It Is
- They Might be Giants - Particle Man
- Go Gos - Our Lips Are Sealed. A blast from the 80's. As an aside - they are singing "our lips are sealed" but I used to think they were singing "honored to see you."
- Clancy Brothers - Patriot Game. I get the chills every time I hear this song.
- Dire Straits - Calling Elvis. A double shot of Mark Knopfler this morning.
