More Linky Links

More stuff I found interesting or amusing and thought I'd share.

- Antifa attacks Portland Democratic Party HQ. Peace in the Middle East may be as simple as giving the Palestinians the City of Portland. Not much different  than what's going on now.

- Morgan Housel: A few thoughts on writing.

 - A $15 Federal minimum wage is a BAD idea (The They Might Be Giants song on the other hand is awesome)

- Big day in New England history.

- Phillip Rivers retires from the NFL

Rip Torn

Actor Rip Torn has passed away at age 88. Known for many iconic roles to me my favorite was starring in this music video:

Torn was 80-years old when he filmed this. Also hard not to think about Rip Torn's legendary fight against Norman Mailer.

Torn was one of a kind.

Flotsam and Jetsam

Miscellaneous thoughts and observations.

One of Alex Cora's most underrated moves the last night was to have Chris Sale come in to close out a 5-1 game. Sale was supposed to have started that game but Cora made the right move to go with David Price. This had to have hurt the ace's ego but allowing Sale to be on the mound when the Series was clinched was a good way to make sure everyone was "good"... Heh Heh... Went to a They Might Be Giants show last night in Providence. Just guessing but I think the SAT scores of that crowd must have been off the charts... Might be a character defect on my part but I have a strong dislike of anyone who has thousands of songs available to choose from on a jukebox but still plays Hotel California... Speaking of overlooked World Series moments - I really hope the Sox can keep Nathan Eovaldi... Kite of Destruction would be a good name for a band (or a military drone)... "I know not all that may be coming, but be it what it will, I'll go to it laughing." Stubb in Moby Dick...

Charles Bukowski Question

My mind works differently than most. This morning I lay in bed wondering if the They Might Be Giants song Birdhouse in Your Soul was inspired in part by the Charles Bukowski poem Bluebird.

Then I wondered how mind-blowing would it be if the reverse were true? The They Might Be Giants album Flood was released in 1990. The Bluebird poem was part of The Last Night of the Earth Poems released circa 1992.

How awesome would it be if this were true?

Flotsam and Jetsam

Miscellaneous thoughts and observations.

Love TJ Oshie for what he did in the shootout vs Russia. Love him even more for what he said about being a "hero"... Random thought - I still say Luis Tiant was better than Catfish Hunter but it is Hunter who was rewarded with a spot in the Hall of Fame... I have a soft spot in my heart for They Might Be Giants - especially for Birdhouse in Your Soul and the whole Flood album for that matter... When I see Vladimir Putin I can't help but think he's the real life character Karla out of all those John Le Carre novels... According to Ted Talks - the 100 websites you should know and use... I've said it before but John Travolta's best role may have been as the Boy in the Bubble. All downhill from there... PGA golfers Ricky Barnes and James Driscoll share what it was like golfing with Tom Brady and Bill Belichick... Patrick Swayze's Sex Pottery would be a good name for a band or a fantasy baseball team...  Who knew? Great Britain won the Olympic Gold for hockey in the 1936 Winter Olympics... Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band play Highway to Hell in Perth, Australia... Funny to remember that Donald Trump blamed Derek Jeter breaking his ankle in the 2012 playoffs on karma because Jeter had just sold his apartment in Trump Towers...

Linky Links

Stuff I found interesting and thought I'd share.

- A guy decides to live on $0 per year (I did this too but I just called it senior year in college)

- 1 Minute Physics - Explaining Dark Energy

- Holy crap - remind me to NEVER mess with Russian security guards. I had to watch this three times to get the full effect of the violence.

- They Might Be Giants plus 80-year old Rip Torn bare knuckle fighting = AWESOME

Strange

This video is all full of strange. Strange to see Steve Burns of Blue's Clues fame with a shaved head. Strange to hear him covering a They Might Be Giants song. Maybe strangest of all that the upbeat guy picked the existential Dead as the song he wanted to cover.

Strange.

Morning Music

Here's this morning's listening (and watching I guess) music selections.

- Mark Knopfler - What It Is

- They Might be Giants - Particle Man

- Go Gos - Our Lips Are Sealed. A blast from the 80's. As an aside - they are singing "our lips are sealed" but I used to think they were singing "honored to see you."

- Clancy Brothers - Patriot Game. I get the chills every time I hear this song.

- Dire Straits - Calling Elvis. A double shot of Mark Knopfler this morning.

Morning Music

Here's this morning's listening (and watching I guess) music selections.

- Tears for Fears - Mad World. The Original. I agree that the dance moves shown are known as "doing the seizure."

- The Waterboys - The Whole of the Moon. I wish I was able to find a nice copy of Fisherman's Blues.

- Warren Zevon - Boom Boom Mancini. Great boxing clips to go with the singing of Warren Zevon.

- They Might Be Giants - Ana Ng

- Gary Jules - Mad World. A very different but equally good remake.
