Linky Links

Stuff I found interesting or amusing and thought I'd share.

- Jonathan Turley on Liberal Democrats calling for saving democracy through bloodthirsty means. That's how we get events like last night. And they know it!

- Donnie Wahlberg offered 50% of his salary if Boston Blue could be filmed in Boston but it was too expensive. So you're seeing Toronto instead.

- What's next for Red Sox after firing Alex Cora.

- Take the 52-week Black and White film challenge. Seen a number of these films multiple times and some have already been remade in color. Don't think it would work for all films especially comedies but don't be surprised to see some re-makes come out.

Flotsam and Jetsam

Miscellaneous thoughts and observations.

This article on what benefits Presidents get after they leave office reminded me that a significant political rift has existed in this country for a long time. President Eisenhower signed the Former Presidents Act mainly to help out Harry Truman who was financially struggling because he refused to cash in for simply being President. This dynamic is interesting because Eisenhower famously refused to enter the White House on Inauguration Day until Harry and Bess Truman had left. No handshake - no nothing.. Interesting bit of history of why there's 60 seconds in a minute and 360 degrees in a circle...  Another example of the political rift was when Chuck Yeager visited the White House after breaking the sound barrier - Yeager's father refused to shake Truman's hand because Truman was a Democrat and Yeager's dad was a staunch Republican... Wish I had bet on Alex Cora being named the new Red Sox manager after his one-year suspension. It was the easiest prediction I've made in quite some time... Civil Wart would be a good name for a band... George Washington wasn't perfect. He didn't like whiskey...

Flotsam and Jetsam

 Miscellaneous thoughts and observations.

So how long will it be before the Red Sox announce they are bringing Alex Cora back as their manager? Is his 1-year suspension up after the regular season or after the World Series?... Congrats to Mike Leach on his first victory as coach of Mississippi State. I have a soft spot for Leach and if you like sports books his Swing Your Sword (written with Bruce Feldman) is one of the better ones out there... So Jeff Samardzija was released by the Giants. The 35 (soon to be 36) year old Samardzija still wants to pitch but he may find few takers. The former Notre Dame receiving sensation made the right choice choosing baseball as he's made over $122 million in his career. Potential Hall of Famer Calvin Johnson who was the second overall pick of the 2007 NFL Draft made just over $113 million in his career and Samardzijo was no Megatron... Flotsam and Jetsam

Miscellaneous thoughts and observations.

Ted Cruz is advocating for a Bill that would hold elected officials liable for allowing rioters who destroy lives and businesses. I support this 100% and have long supported something similar for elected officials in "Sanctuary Cities" for any damage or crimes committed by illegal immigrants "caught and released" within their jurisdiction...  Heh Heh... Have a sneaking suspicion that the Red Sox plan to tank on purpose this season so that they can justify bringing back Alex Cora as manager next season... Do you really want to get your political views from heiress actor celebrities? On the other hand - The Mighty Tree Octopi would make a great band name... Wonder if one of the lasting unreported effects of all these protests and riots in big cities will be infestations of head lice? Not the most of hygienic folks... Mike Tyson is set to fight an exhibition on September 12th against Roy Jones Jr. As the article points out Tyson isn't fighting because he's broke (he's not). And as I'd like to point out here - I'm probably going to be watching this fight...

Flotsam and Jetsam

Miscellaneous thoughts and observations.

With Astros GM Jeff Luhnow and manager AJ Hinch first being suspended for a year by MLB then fired by Houston's owner Jim Crane, I'd look for the next shoe to drop being a heavy fine and suspension for current Red Sox manager Alex Cora. I'd also expect the Boston Globe (owned by Red Sox owner John Henry) to do a big expose on the Patriots in response... Q: What did the fish say when it bumped its head on a cement wall? A: Dam!... Why do I feel the phrase "Stuck on Stupid" is going to make a big comeback in 2020... "Writing is like prostitution. First you do it for love, and then for a few close friends, and then for money." - Moliere... GOOP has a candle called "Smells Like My Vagina" while Burger King has a meatless burger called "Tastes Like My Ass"...

One Year Ago Today

Last year on this date the Red Sox announced Alex Cora as their new manager. And Cora made this "prediction":

"Every win we're going to celebrate... hopefully there's like a hundred and something... if we do that that means we're going to have a parade here in Boston." - Alex Cora November 6, 2017.

Give that man a new contract!

Flotsam and Jetsam

Miscellaneous thoughts and observations.

One of Alex Cora's most underrated moves the last night was to have Chris Sale come in to close out a 5-1 game. Sale was supposed to have started that game but Cora made the right move to go with David Price. This had to have hurt the ace's ego but allowing Sale to be on the mound when the Series was clinched was a good way to make sure everyone was "good"... Heh Heh... Went to a They Might Be Giants show last night in Providence. Just guessing but I think the SAT scores of that crowd must have been off the charts... Might be a character defect on my part but I have a strong dislike of anyone who has thousands of songs available to choose from on a jukebox but still plays Hotel California... Speaking of overlooked World Series moments - I really hope the Sox can keep Nathan Eovaldi... Kite of Destruction would be a good name for a band (or a military drone)... Flotsam and Jetsam

Miscellaneous thoughts and observations.

I'm sure Alex Cora will be a fine manager for the Red Sox but I just don't have any enthusiasm to give to that team as this point of the year... Heh heh - we've all been there... The people who love the intrigue and baseness of politics must share some core common trait with people who can't get enough Dr. Pimple Popper videos... Heh heh - one year ago... Joe Thomas' consecutive snap streak was one of the more impressive athletic achievements in recent memory. Feel bad for Thomas that it had to end Sunday... Cool visualization of the warping of spacetime... Speaking of warping spacetime - a teaspoon of a neutron star would weigh as much as one billion tons. Just throwing that out there... The Heartbreakers react to the loss of Tom Petty...
