Quotes for Today

Some quotes I hope may resonate with you.

"Disagreement is not oppression. Argument is not assault. Words - even provocative or repugnant ones - are not violence. The answer to speech we do not like is more speech." - Douglas Murray

"A great man is hard on himself; a small man is hard on others." - Confucius

"The more the Internet exposes people to new points of view, the angrier people get that different views exist." - Benedict Evans

Flotsam and Jetsam

 Miscellaneous thoughts and observations.

So how long will it be before the Red Sox announce they are bringing Alex Cora back as their manager? Is his 1-year suspension up after the regular season or after the World Series?... Congrats to Mike Leach on his first victory as coach of Mississippi State. I have a soft spot for Leach and if you like sports books his Swing Your Sword (written with Bruce Feldman) is one of the better ones out there... So Jeff Samardzija was released by the Giants. The 35 (soon to be 36) year old Samardzija still wants to pitch but he may find few takers. The former Notre Dame receiving sensation made the right choice choosing baseball as he's made over $122 million in his career. Potential Hall of Famer Calvin Johnson who was the second overall pick of the 2007 NFL Draft made just over $113 million in his career and Samardzijo was no Megatron... "If we would just slow down, happiness would catch up to us." - Dr. Richard Carlson. Sunday's are good days for slowing things down... Go Pats!!!...

Mike Leach - Swing Your Sword

From the Mike Leach autobiography co-written with Bruce Feldman:
...I told the team how similar football teams are to pirate crews, guys of all kinds of ethnicities coming from all corners of society, serving a gamut of roles onboard. I explained how the pirates viewed their swords the same way football players viewed their bodies.
"They took great pride in their swords, sharpening them just like players do their bodies by lifting the weights and doing all the drills we do," I said.
    The players said nothing.
I swung this long sword through the air in front of them.
"Your body is your sword. Are you going to swing your sword aggressively, but really out of control like you're out there playing street ball?" I said as I began to haphazardly swing the sword around.
"If you're frantic, without being clear-minded, you put yourself into a vulnerable position. Are you going to duck your head and swing it timidly? Or are you going to have great technique and swing it without hesitation?"
Some of 'em nodded their heads. Some laughed watching me flail around with the sword. Some couldn't wait till I stopped talking just so they could come up and touch the sword. But the point was made. We were pirates, and the next time we went into battle, our swords would be ready. "Swing Your Sword" became a battle cry for us.
Go out there today and Swing Your Sword!

Flotsam and Jetsam

Miscellaneous thoughts and observations.

How long before Hillary Clinton alleges that Amy Robach is a Russia asset?...  Meanwhile an important message from Dennis Rodman... I would really like to know how many people complaining about Kurt Suzuki wearing a MAGA hat at the White House also have a COEXIST bumper sticker on their car... Something I was wondering today - in what professional sports locker room do you think you'd find the most book lovers? My gut says the NHL but I guess it really depends upon the team and not the sport... I wish there was a Venn diagram of people who support #MeToo and those who still support Hillary Clinton so I could mute the people on Twitter who fall in the overlap... I think Mike Leach would make a good fit and a good hire as the next Florida State head football coach. He loves Key West, is an offensive savant and Gardner Minshew mania is going on in Jacksonville. He checks all the boxes to succeed in the State of Florida...

Mike Leach on David vs Goliah

"I do kinda wonder if the Davis vs. Goliath story doesn't get misinterpreted sometimes. What David did was impressive, but it doesn't just illustrate that the little guy went out and beat the big guy, and it was a miracle! It's more an illustration of how if you find a way to master the mental, physical, and spiritual aspects of your life, problems that previously seemed insurmountable suddenly don't seem all that big. Any problem is solvable if you allow yourself the clear-mindedness to find the solution." - Coach Mike Leach

Karma

A great example of karma is Mike Leach who was basically fired as head coach of Texas Tech for how he supposedly mistreated Craig James son Adam.

It should be noted that Mike Leach was the only coach to offer Adam a scholarship and only did so at the behest of Craig James who had made the same plea to his alma mater SMU who declined.

Craig James is a homophobe and now a pariah in college football while Mike Leach has found success as the head coach of Washington State who will be playing Iowa State today in the Alamo Bowl. Texas Tech has not come close to succeeding to the same level they enjoyed under Leach.

It is hard not to root for the likable Mike Leach.

And hard not to think karma was real for all involved in this story.

Linky Links

Stuff I found interesting or amusing and thought I'd share.

- Bad Lip Reading of Twilight. These are always amusing.

- This is why I'm a fan of Mike Leach. Too bad he won't be available to fill the BC job.

- This is so sad - Kevin McHale's daughter passes away at age 23

- Rob Gronkowski buys $1.6 million bachelor pad in Tampa. I had him figured for a South Beach guy.

-  Big Stupid Tommy has his list of his 50 favorite books. I should do a list like this too. Of the books on Tommy's list -I've only read 16 but that number will increase as I take Tommy's recommendations to hear.

Flotsam and Jetsam

Miscellaneous thoughts and observations.

I am a big fan of Josh Reddick. I thought he was going to be the starting RF in 2012 for the Red Sox. I also think his late season drop-off probably had a lot do do with his injured wrist. Having said that -  really like the trade for Andrew Bailey. He becomes the closer and lets Daniel Bard become a starter. The one thing I'm not so hot on is the idea of Bailey keeping number 40 on his uniform. The last closer to wear that number for the Red Sox was Calvin Schiraldi. Bad juju... Who knew? According to Mental Floss "Barry Manilow's hit 'I Write the Songs' was not written by Barry Manilow"... The Boston Celtics have lost 3 games in less than a week. You would have to go back to October to find 3 losses for the Boston Bruins... Just saying but if I owned a zoo - I would make money on the side doing body disposal Mr. Wu on Deadwood style. Good thing I don't own a zoo... This is an interesting nugget via Sports by Brooks, "Keep in mind, [Mike] Leach was only coach in America who offered Adam James a scholarship, at Craig's behest. SMU wouldn't"... Is it possible that Rex Ryan is actually a worse coach than Herm Edwards? When Edwards was done in NYC he at least was able to get another HC job with the Chiefs. When Ryan is eventually fired by the Jets do you think another team will take on his baggage? Even asking the question comparing him to Edwards is an indictment on Ryan... If Drew Brees broke the passing record before Christmas he might have been able to sell a ton of Isotoner gloves... My daughter makes an awesome drink she calles a Ferrero Rocher. It's half Hazelnut coffee and half hot chocolate.

Flotsam and Jetsam

Miscellaneous thoughts and observations.
Lost Rainbow Toad found after 87-years. I hope they find the elusive hypno-toad next... Good to hear that Blue's Clues star Steve Burns did not die of a heroin overdose. Maybe I'm out of the loop but I wasn't even aware there were rumors of his demise... ESPN suspending Bruce Feldman is despicable. I don't have an Insider account I can cancel so instead I'm going to buy one of his books to show my support. Swing Your Sword: Leading the Charge in Football and Life the Mike Leach book looks like a very good read... The administration at Kent State must be very proud of the level of education alumni James Harrison is exhibiting recently... The guys who do these short films are very talented. The Sean Bean Death Reel... I was late to the game for CSI but really got into watching the series via syndication. I burned out on the show just about the time Laurence Fishburne joined the cast. Having Ted Danson join the show just may peak the interest for me to start watching again... Some Linky Links to finish up:

- Tough Quiz: Name the Most Populous U.S. City for Each Letter of the Alphabet...

- This just made me laugh. I don't apologize...

- Beer Hydrates Better Than Water. Beer - is there anything it can't do?

- I also laughed at this. Again - no apologies.
