Linky Links

Stuff I found interesting or amusing and thought I'd share.

- Dan Wetzel: NCAA tournament expansion is bad, but it's happening.

- From the archives: The history of A1 sauce.

- Some interesting WW II history.

- Charlie Baker: Congress must secure the future of college sports. After watching the blatant money grab of playoffs expansion in basketball and football - I don't think the NCAA is in the position to ask for anything from the public.

- Ukraine agrees to a 30-day cease fire. Now the ball is in Russia's court. We live in interesting times.

- From the archives: Peter Attia on the epidemic of Martiomania. It's that time of year again!

So Very True

Nation's men prepare to pretend they've been following college basketball all season.

You know the type and with March Madness starting on Saint Patrick's Day everyone will be an expert after the third beer.

Wuhan Virus Flotsam and Jetsam

Miscellaneous thoughts and observations about the coronavirus Wuhan virus.

Honestly I was a person who viewed the coronavirus Wuhan virus as something worse than the common flu but not as bad as the Black Death. Then the NBA goes and cancels the rest of their season and suddenly I'm thinking this may be closer to the Black Death than I thought... The Wuhan virus exposes the danger of reliance on China. I feel that this crisis is going to hurt our economy but only temporarily. I think the damage to the Chinese economy will be permanent as countries realize the position relying on the Chinese has put them in and begin decoupling and moving those manufacturing requirements out of China... If NBA refs are paid by the game then I have to think that Rudy Gobert never gets a close call for the rest of his career. In fact I'd look for Rudy Gobert to foul out on a regular basis if the NBA ever gets back to playing games... The coronavirus Wuhan virus could force the NCAA to play March Madness tournament games in empty arenas. And as the story points out its not the virus itself that's the big issue but potential lawsuits over the virus that may force the NCAA's hand... I predict one of the outcomes from colleges suspending in-person classes for the rest of the semester will be rampant grade inflation. Professors will be sympathetic to the situation to begin with but then factor in flubs with videoconferencing - that's an A for everyone. Student complains that lack of teacher availability hurt their grade - give that student an A and an apology... Another prediction - look for Albert Camus' book The Plague to shoot up the Amazon best seller list in the next few weeks...

Flotsam and Jetsam

Miscellaneous thoughts and observations.

Keep seeing that Elizabeth Warren came in third in her "home state." Let's be clear - Warren is not from Massachusetts. She's a carpetbagging Harvard professor... If science showed that one of the side effects of the corona virus was penis enlargement - what percentage of men do you think would be willing to purposefully risk infection?... I think a one-man show of Hemingway's Old Man and the Sea starring Erik Estrada would be so bad its good in a Springtime for Hitler type way... "In America, the young are always ready to give to those who are older than themselves the full benefits of their inexperience." Oscar Wilde in 1887 explaining Bernie Sanders popularity with the American youth of 2020... Just a reminder - we know exactly who President Obama picked each year in his NCAA March Madness pools we still don't know where he was the night our embassy in Benghazi was attacked...

Midnight Special

It's March Madness but man does not live on brackets alone. This week I'm looking forward to going to see the new movie Midnight Special. It looks intriguing and I really like Michael Shannon.

I have an extra set of tickets that were sent to me by the good people at Grace Hill Media - shoot me an email if you'd like to go (tickets good until April 21st).

Go Holy Cross!

Flotsam and Jetsam

Miscellaneous thoughts and observations.

Americans spend more money on March Madness than on Presidential elections - by a wide margin. Tell me again why the money these schools make from the TV contracts for March Madness isn't taxable... Watched the Donald Rumsfeld documentary The Unknown Known on Netflix over the weekend. Two big thumbs up! Then again I'm a big fan of Rummy...  Georgetown's colors of blue and grey were chosen back in 1876 to support "unity between the Northern and Southern boys of the college"... It has been 10 weeks since the NFL appointed Ted Wells to "investigate" "Deflategate". Ten weeks!... Heh heh... I was never bothered by that picture of Rumsfeld shaking hands with Saddam Hussein. If he was photographed shaking hands with Dan Shaughnessy - different story!... Of the Congressmen to vote against the Civil Rights Act of 1964 - 74% were Democrats... The phrase "gent bent" is supposedly short for "you should get bent over so that someone can sodomize you on Christmas". And a Merry Christmas to you too...

Flotsam and Jetsam

Miscellaneous thoughts and observations.

I have 99 problems but a busted bracket ain't one of them. Another year and no brackets filled out - give them up already... Heh heh - wisdom from a WWII veteran... Georgetown's nickname of Hoyas means "what rocks!" in Greek. Based upon their performance in the NCAA these past few years - I wonder what is Greek for "what bricks!"... David Petraeus - ISIS is not our biggest problem in Iraq, Iran is... The Mesopotamian god of the moon was called Sin which is appropriate since most "sins" occur at night... This issue could be loaded with irony. Coal plants are needed to protect the manatees... A TV show called Rick Santorum Vatican Spy would be awesome. It would be a cross between The West Wing and Archer... Excellent point - Starbucks wants to talk race relations but they have no stores in Selma, Fergueon or other mostly black communities. Hypocritical posers... So what is killing the bees?...

Coolest Alums from All 68 March Madness Schools

This list is pretty cool - albeit very subjective.

Like him or hate him - Bill Clinton is a cooler Georgetown alumnus than Bradley Cooper. You could make similar arguments for many of the schools - except San Diego State.

Hypocrisy - Thy Name is NCAA

NCAA president Myles Brand is a piece of work:
In a separate news conference at Ford Field, NCAA president Myles Brand said the organization only prohibits gambling on college and professional sports But Brand said he would prefer athletes don't gamble at the casinos.

"Well, I warn against that slippery slope. It's a fair question," said Brand, who was not asked specifically about Lawson. "What a student does, play bingo in his church for example, while we discourage that, we prefer not to try and regulate that particular kind of activity. But it's highly discouraged."
Did any reporter have the brains or balls to follow up by asking Brand about all the gambling associated with March Madness brackets? Does Brand try to discourage broadcast partner CBS from offering brackets and bracket contests (for amusement only wink wink) for instance?
