Wuhan Virus Flotsam and Jetsam
Miscellaneous thoughts and observations about the coronavirus Wuhan virus.
Honestly I was a person who viewed thecoronavirus Wuhan virus as something worse than the common flu but not as bad as the Black Death. Then the NBA goes and cancels the rest of their season and suddenly I'm thinking this may be closer to the Black Death than I thought... The Wuhan virus exposes the danger of reliance on China. I feel that this crisis is going to hurt our economy but only temporarily. I think the damage to the Chinese economy will be permanent as countries realize the position relying on the Chinese has put them in and begin decoupling and moving those manufacturing requirements out of China... If NBA refs are paid by the game then I have to think that Rudy Gobert never gets a close call for the rest of his career. In fact I'd look for Rudy Gobert to foul out on a regular basis if the NBA ever gets back to playing games... The coronavirus Wuhan virus could force the NCAA to play March Madness tournament games in empty arenas. And as the story points out its not the virus itself that's the big issue but potential lawsuits over the virus that may force the NCAA's hand... I predict one of the outcomes from colleges suspending in-person classes for the rest of the semester will be rampant grade inflation. Professors will be sympathetic to the situation to begin with but then factor in flubs with videoconferencing - that's an A for everyone. Student complains that lack of teacher availability hurt their grade - give that student an A and an apology... Another prediction - look for Albert Camus' book The Plague to shoot up the Amazon best seller list in the next few weeks...
