Top 5 - Michael Caine Roles

Yesterday was the anniversary of Michael Caine announcing he's retiring from acting and at his age who can blame him? Here's my favorite Michael Caine roles. (And a reminder - if you say say the words "my cocaine" you are also saying "Michael Caine" in his own accent.)

1. The Fourth Protocol as John Preston an English spy trying to outwit Pierce Brosnan's Russian agent.

2. The Man Who Would be King as Peachy Carnehan opposite Sean Connery.

3. Secondhand Lions as Garth in this very underrated movie for which I have a soft spot.

4. As Alfred in the Chris Nolan Batman Trilogy

5. Harry Brown - Caine doing a Death Wish style action movie at age 77? Yes - very underrated.

Please note I'm too young to have seen Alfie and have never seen The Cider House Rules, and don't think Get Carter has aged well (even though it was later remade by Sylvester Stallone). Remember these are my favorite roles - your preferences are bound to be different. Would have liked to put his role as Laurence Jamieson in Dirty Rotten Scoundrels on the list but honestly never felt a desire to re-watch that flick.

Quotes for Today

Some quotes I hope may resonate with you.

"The best years of your life are the ones in which you decide your problems are your own." - Albert Ellis

"Whoever could make two ears of corn, or two blades of grass, to grow upon a spot of ground where only one grew before, would deserve better of mankind, and do more essential service to his country, than the whole race of politicians put together." - Jonathan Swift

"A decline in courage may be the most striking feature that an outside observer notices in the West today." - Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn

"I'd rather be a poor master of my own fate than a rich servant of someone else's." - Michael Caine

Flotsam and Jetsam

Miscellaneous thoughts and observations.

Today should have been the annual Saint Patrick's Day Parade in Worcester. This is one of the 5 largest St Patty's parades in the country but because of Covid we can't have nice things... Reminder - we knew exactly who President Obama picked in his NCAA pool but we never learned where he was the night our Embassy in Benghazi was attacked... Cancel culture may have started with lawn darts. First they came for Jarts and I said nothing... The Quest for Good Explanations would be a good name for a blog... Happy 88th birthday to Michael Caine. Remember if you say "my cocaine" you are also saying Michael Caine's name in his own voice...

Linky Links

Stuff I found interesting or amusing and thought I'd share.

- TDS claims another victory. Guessing Cheney won't be re-elected in 2022. She'll be labeled as being part of "the Swamp" and that label will stick.

- Heh Heh - "Skynet is a private company. They can do what they want."

- Why the Left has to Suppress Free Speech

- Poetry Break - Kipling's IF read by Michael Caine (one of my favorite poems)

Linky Links

Stuff I found interesting or amusing and thought I'd share.

- Churchill in Hitler's bunker. (Via)

- Scientists say "Planet Nine" can't hide much longer. The hypothetical planet is supposed to be 10-times the mass of Earth and 50-times further from the Sun than Pluto

- This is the best

- Cool - a way to remember deep time

- Europe wants to mine the moon by 2025. There is a new space race going on.

- Interesting Michael Caine interview. Seems I've read many of those answers before though.

- A poker playing robot goes to work for the Pentagon

Flotsam and Jetsam

Miscellaneous thoughts and observations.

Not only is today Albert Einstein's birthday it is also Michael Cain'e birthday and Pi Day (3/14)... Yesterday was the Saint Patrick's Day Parade in Worcester. Or as I like to call it - 10,000 Maniacs (with apologies to Natalie Merchant)... Hours upon hours of my childhood ruined by facts... Speaking of Pi - back in the 17th century the value of Pi was known to 35 decimals. Today it is known to 1.2411 trillion except in Alabama where by law the value of Pi is rounded to 3.14... Heh heh - the wife of Pi... By the way did you know that if you say "My Cocaine" you are also saying Michael Caine in his own voice?... I want this T-Shirt... In honor of Michael Caine - here's the song by Madness called appropriately enough Michael Caine:

Flotsam and Jetsam

Miscellaneous thoughts and observations.

So when the Patriots did not resign Darrelle Revis to a contract many in the Boston media were all over them for not stepping up and signing the great corner. But here's the thing - if the Patriots had signed Revis to a similar deal to what the Jets gave him then those very same media members would have instead ripped New England for overpaying for a CB and breaking their rules of financial restraint. You know it's true... RIP Gene Patton - aka Gene, Gene the Dancing Machine... Today is Michael Caine's birthday. Probably going to watch one of his older movies at some point today. Something like The Man Who Would Be King... Heh heh... So if your fantasy football league had a trade that sent LeSean McCoy and Nick Foles to another team for Sam Bradford and DeMarco Murray who would you say won that trade? Basically that's what the Eagles just did... Cool... As a reminder - if you say "My Cocaine" you are also saying "Michael Caine" in his own voice... Hmmmm - no net change in thickness of Arctic Sea ice since 1940... Today is also Albert Einstein's birthday. Just a reminder that even though E=MC2 is perhaps the most famous scientific equation in history - Einstein never received the Nobel Prize for coming up with it. The reasons for this slight were mostly because Einstein was Jewish... Muppets as comic book characters... Random Albert Einstein trivia; when Einstein lived in Princeton he had a small 17-foot sailboat he named Tinef which is Yiddish for "piece of junk"... Tom Hanks is a really nice guy...

Flotsam and Jetsam

Miscellaneous thoughts and observations.

Martin Luther King Jr. quote worth remembering these days, "Returning violence for violence multiplies violence, adding deeper darkness to a night already devoid of stars"... Well it is tough to argue with this logic... As pointed out elsewhere, if you say "My Cocaine" you are also saying "Michael Caine" in his own voice... Good question... I wonder if Bill Cosby has looked into booking tour dates in countries with no extradition yet... Never change Bill Clinton, never change... After reading that "My Cocaine" / "Michael Caine" thing above - you said "My Cocaine" out loud didn't you?... Can't argue with this logic either...

Michael Caine

I thought of this lost classic from the 80's today for some reason. Michael Caine by Madness (a very under-rated UK band)
