NFL Championship Sunday

There's many making comparisons of Brock Purdy to Tom Brady and the Patriots magical 2001 season. I too see a comparison to that season but its in the way Philadelphia may be overconfident in the outcome of the Championship game they are hosting similar to how so overconfident the Steelers were when hosting New England in 2001. Pittsburgh even went so far as to start giving out travel advice to New Orleans to their fans. That's not to say I think the 49ers will win - just that the game is giving off similar vibes.

As far as the Bengals vs Chiefs in the AFC  - who would be surprised if either team won? Same is true in the NFC. Should be some good football on Sunday.

Josh McDaniels

One thing I haven't seen mentioned in discussions of Josh McDaniels losing out on the Eagles head coaching job to Colts assistant Nick Sirianni is how much McDaniels existing salary is.

In order to keep McDaniels and persuade him to decline the Colts offer to be their head coach a couple of seasons ago - the Patriots had to give McDaniels a significant bump in pay. In line with what an NFL head coach makes. It would not surprise me in the least if McDaniels' salary as the Offensive Coordinator in New England is more than what Nick Sirianni is getting as the head coach of the Eagles. It may be even more than what the other assistants hired by other teams like the Jets, Lions, Chargers and Falcons are paying their new head coaches.

It has long been reported that Robert Kraft has an agreement to keep Bill Belichick the highest paid coach in the NFL. Would it be a stretch to assume that McDaniels has a similar agreement to be the top paid assistant coach? That's both a blessing and a curse for McDaniels. He's highly compensated with less pressure than would come with the job of head coach but his price tag may limit his opportunities to take a job at the next level.

Flotsam and Jetsam

Miscellaneous thoughts and observations.

How great would it be if you took all the great "Hail Mary" passes in football history (Stabauch, Flutie, etc.) and set them to the music of Ave Maria?... In January of 1835 the U.S. national debt was reduced to $0 for the first and only time in history (file this under things that will never happen again)... Interesting look at what went wrong with Carson Wentz and the Philadelphia Eagles. Was amused by this line in the article, "When you believe you've found the Great White of team sports - an elite quarterback - you hold on for dear life and you feed the beast." Even the moderately literate get that "Great White" is a Moby Dick reference but I chuckle knowing many out there will wrongly read it as some sort of MAGA dog-whistle or even sillier as some kind of reference to the movie JAWS... Has anyone asked Joe Biden if he plans to move the US Embassy out of Jerusalem? I know Biden has only been asked softballs but I'd be really curious to hear his response to this question... Need a ruling on this - the way Amazon, Apple, and Google trampled Parler would that have been considered a violation of Net Neutrality if Net Neutrality was the law of the land? If not - what's the good of Net Neutrality?...

Flotsam and Jetsam

Miscellaneous thoughts and observations.

Personally I think the writer of the anonymous NYT opinion piece was a hold-over from the Obama Administration...  I'm still disappointed that the nickname "the Junk Mailer" doesn't show up on Brett Favre's Football-Reference.com page... "Mumble, mumble, mumble, discontention"(My favorite thing to say under my breath at meetings that run too long)... On many trips I've asked myself the same question... Why hasn't Taylor Swift spoken out about the Nike Kaepernick ad controversy? What is she hiding?... Legal brothels in Nevada have added the "Philly Special" to their "menu". (In actuality they just changed the name of their "Mexican Avalanche" offering.) Only the best for Eagles fans... Heh Heh...

Flotsam and Jetsam

Miscellaneous thoughts and observations.

OK I'll say it! The real reason the Patriots lost to the Eagles in the Super Bowl was because of Tom Brady's lack of a proper playoff beard!... I love stories like this. Turnabout isn't just fair play it's awesome!... Remember to live every week like it's Shark Week... Mea culpa - I have to admit that years ago when Andrew Bogut was coming out of college I thought that he'd be just as good an NBA pro as Tim Duncan. Could be I overestimated Bogut's ability and vastly underrated Duncan's greatness there... Seriously congratulations again to the Eagles. Their Super Bowl rings look fantastic... Am I alone in wishing the producers of Wheel of Fortune would bring back the part of the show where winners went shopping and had to spend their winnings on merchandise?... Ballooning spider, flying spiders, no thank you spiders...

Flotsam and Jetsam

Miscellaneous thoughts and observations.

I just know somehow some Eagles players are going to blame the White House "disinvite" on the New England Patriots... If it's true that less than 10 Eagles players planned to attend the White House ceremony then I don't blame the President for revoking the invitation. And how can Eagles players complain about being disinvited if none of them planned on attending anyway?... Still say that when it comes time for September call-ups the Atlanta Braves should add "The Freeze" to the roster as a pinch runner... It must be cool to be able to see America through the child-like wonder of the Greek Freak... Also still say that if people in the South really want to get rid of the statues of Confederate Generals there should be a Kickstarter to replace those statues with ones of Gregg Allman... If you see this quote from Tom Brady on NBA refs circulating on the Interwebs just know it's 100% made-up...  Rest in peace Dwight Clark. Visiting your restaurant Clark's By the Bay was a highlight of a trip my fiancee and I took to San Fran in 1989 (though the restaurant wasn't easy to get to)...

Flotsam and Jetsam

Miscellaneous thoughts and observations.

Congratulations to the Philadelphia Eagles and all their fans. Very deserved victory Sunday night. Yes I'm disappointed the Patriots didn't win but you cannot take away from the game the Eagles played. They were the better team... I want this door knocker... When people ask "how are you?" Or "how you doing?" I'm going to answer "I'm aggressively happy" and leave them wondering just what the hell that means... Who knew? Cycling causes more concussions than football... In modern dollars the ransoms paid to release England's King Richard the Lionhearted would have cost over $2 billion (34 tons of gold)...  Heh heh - funny because it's true!... February 14th could easily now be renamed National Shave Your Legs and Pubics Day sponsored by Lady Gillette instead of Valentine's Day and there would be more truth in advertising...

Flotsam and Jetsam

Miscellaneous thoughts and observations.

So when the Patriots did not resign Darrelle Revis to a contract many in the Boston media were all over them for not stepping up and signing the great corner. But here's the thing - if the Patriots had signed Revis to a similar deal to what the Jets gave him then those very same media members would have instead ripped New England for overpaying for a CB and breaking their rules of financial restraint. You know it's true... RIP Gene Patton - aka Gene, Gene the Dancing Machine... Today is Michael Caine's birthday. Probably going to watch one of his older movies at some point today. Something like The Man Who Would Be King... Heh heh... So if your fantasy football league had a trade that sent LeSean McCoy and Nick Foles to another team for Sam Bradford and DeMarco Murray who would you say won that trade? Basically that's what the Eagles just did... Cool... As a reminder - if you say "My Cocaine" you are also saying "Michael Caine" in his own voice... Hmmmm - no net change in thickness of Arctic Sea ice since 1940... Today is also Albert Einstein's birthday. Just a reminder that even though E=MC2 is perhaps the most famous scientific equation in history - Einstein never received the Nobel Prize for coming up with it. The reasons for this slight were mostly because Einstein was Jewish... Muppets as comic book characters... Random Albert Einstein trivia; when Einstein lived in Princeton he had a small 17-foot sailboat he named Tinef which is Yiddish for "piece of junk"... Tom Hanks is a really nice guy...

Flotsam and Jetsam

Miscellaneous thoughts and observations.

Am I a bad person because I laughed at this?... If I had a brewery that competed against Heineken - I would have a commercial of two skunks drinking Heineken saying things like Heineken is their favorite beer and how you don't even have to leave it out in the sun for hours to get it to the way skunks like their beer... Space Shuttle breaching the clouds... I really think many Red Sox fans are paying more attention to how Pawtucket is doing in the AAA playoffs than how Boston is doing in MLB... The word "alamo" is Spanish for the cottonwood tree. "Remember the Cottonwood" just doesn't have the same ring as a rallying cry though... Kinda like the Eagles (+3) and the under (54) tonight. If the line goes to 3.5 then I'd love Philadelphia in this game. Everyone and their brother seems to like the over which is a good time to go the other way...

Flotsam and Jetsam

Miscellaneous thoughts and observations.

Not that QB rating is that great a stat but I find it interesting that Eagles QB Vince Young has career rating of 75.1 while the Broncos Tim Tebow has a 79.8 rating - yet some people insist Young is better. I've become a Tebow fan more because of the people rooting against him than for what he does on the field at this point... Van Morrison's I'm Not Feeling it Any More is one of his more under-appreciated songs... The Muses were the daughters of Zeus and Mnemosyne (Memory). They were born of Memory so their arts cause the soul to remember a higher plane of being. The Ancients seem to have had a better grasp of what the arts do then we moderns... New Company Policy: We are not hiring until Obama is gone... Quote for the Day: "The harder you work, the harder it is to surrender." - Vince Lombardi... Every time my doctor talks to me about ADHD I change the subject... Does Walking Through Doorways Cause Forgetfulness? Surprisingly the answer seems to be YES... Dave Attell and Jay Glazer should star in a remake of The Odd Couple except I'd have Dave be slob photographer who boozes too much while Jay is an over organized sports reporter with MMA friends. Just the guest stars you could bring in each week could make the show a success... Any time I see Newt Gingrich speak I always picture him as Santa's gay half-brother to see if it makes him any more likable... Who knew? Urban Meyer was drafted by the Atlanta Braves in 1982 and spent and couple years in their minor league system...

Flotsam and Jetsam

Miscellaneous thoughts and observations.

I wonder if Michael Vick would still vote for himself for MVP after yesterday's performance. I hate to toot my own horn but I did call that Vick would make the Eagles a one and out playoff team... Kind of funny to see Drew Brees and Peyton Manning in commercials now that their teams were eliminated in the first round... I guess "Wealthy Hippies" don't exist... The things you learn from the Internet: The La-Z-Boy got its name in a contest. Other submissions included the Sit-N-Snooze and the Slack-Back (via Mental Floss)... Very interesting theory - is Roger Clemens the real reason Andy Pettitte is retiring?... Every time I see that ad for Lectric Shave with Carmen Electra - I think the ad is going to be for a porn movie... When I was growing up people were worried about Irish bombs. Today it is Irish bonds. Is that progress?... Most comic use for activated carbon ever. If you are anything like me - you actually read that and think about buying some... The things you learn from the Internet Part II: Before renaming the team "Jets" in 1963, the New York Titans franchise considered the names Dodgers, Gothams and Borros (via Mental Floss). Too bad they didn't go with Borros because with a jackass for a coach it would really fit...

This is Why they Cancelled the Eagles Game Today

Not sure if it will be any better on Tuesday. This is what is in store for fans wearing Viking's jerseys. It will probably be 10 times worse if it is a Brett Favre jersey.

Flotsam and Jetsam

Miscellaneous thoughts and observations.

Supposedly back in July of 2005 the Blue Jays turned down a Ryan Howard for Ted Lilly deal. It is interesting to ponder on how that deal could have changed the fortunes of both franchises. Oh I know that a MVP caliber player for a 2nd starter seems one-sided on the surface but Lilly could have been the extra ingredient in 2005 to get the Phillies into the playoffs in a weak year when the Astros won the NL and the White Sox won the World Series... Movie Trivia: Captain Quint's name means "fifth" in Latin. In the movie Jaws - he's the fifth person killed by the shark... PJ O'Rourke on Democrats... Presidential Trivia: Richard Nixon is the only sitting President to ever attend a running of the Kentucky Derby... I checked my American College Dictionary and "physicality" is not a word. I wish sports announcers would stop using it... A blonde is a blonde, a brunette is a brunette, a redhead is a redhead but what do you call woman with black hair? You don't call her a black head... If you are bitten by Abe Vigoda - do you become a zombie?... They call me Heat Miser, Whatever I touch - starts to melt in my clutch - I'm too much!...

Flotsam and Jetsam

Miscellaneous thoughts and observations.

I think President Obama's problems stem from him not being fully understood. I think he should make nightly prime-time speeches so that the American public can get to understand how good the healthcare and stimulus programs are for the poor and middle-class of America. Yeah - that's the ticket!... Looking at Philadelphia's schedule - I think the Eagles are definitely playoff bound and if that's the case then Vick-mania will grow by the week. I don't think Vick can be mistake free in the playoffs though and the Eagles season will likely end with a whimper not a bang... Random Kurt Vonnegut thought for the day - I hope Kim Jong Il has not developed Ice Nine... I wonder how many fantasy football teams have dropped Saints kicker Garrett Hartley.... The Lion King 300 Recut Trailer... Just saying but the Oakland Raiders are 10th in total offense and 4th in defense. They could be a sleeper team - not quite playoff bound but not quite as bad as some may think. This is bad news for the Patriots who hold the Raiders 1st round pick. Unless New England ends up with a marque player like Alabama's Ingram then I think history will show that the Patriots trading Richard Seymour to be the wrong move at the wrong time... Notre Dame is going to KILL Boston College next week. I don't care what the line is - I'm betting the Irish big.... Cool - Stephen Fry Will Portray Mycroft Holmes in Sherlock Holmes 2...
