NFL Championship Sunday

There's many making comparisons of Brock Purdy to Tom Brady and the Patriots magical 2001 season. I too see a comparison to that season but its in the way Philadelphia may be overconfident in the outcome of the Championship game they are hosting similar to how so overconfident the Steelers were when hosting New England in 2001. Pittsburgh even went so far as to start giving out travel advice to New Orleans to their fans. That's not to say I think the 49ers will win - just that the game is giving off similar vibes.

As far as the Bengals vs Chiefs in the AFC  - who would be surprised if either team won? Same is true in the NFC. Should be some good football on Sunday.

Kansas City Chiefs and Karma

Dan Wetzel has a good article about Ariel Miller who was critically injured in a suspected DUI last Thursday night. The driver that injured Ariel was Chiefs assistant coach Britt Reid, son of head coach Andy Reid.

The paragraph that most upset me was:

By now, either the Reid family, who have made tens of millions coaching in the NFL, or the Hunt family, billionaires who own the Chiefs, should have stepped up and said they would cover all costs. As of midday Monday, the Miller family said they haven't heard from either party.

Shame! Shame on the Kansas City Chiefs and the Reid family. Shame!

Flotsam and Jetsam

Miscellaneous thoughts and observations.

There was a large bomb that was detonated in Nashville. The media has been lagging in reporting about it because they need to know the motivation of the bomber first before framing the story. That in a nutshell is the state of our media today... In Star Wars they are called Tie-Fighters but nobody in that universe seems to wear ties. Minor detail that bugs me... Wonder if you could get a Super Bowl bet on the Kansas City Chiefs vs the Field? And what would be the odds on the Field? I like the field... People who have to shovel the snow never dream of a White Christmas - just saying... Instant Entropy would be a good name for a demolition construction company... Part of me would like to see a version of I Will Survive sung by Donald Trump with Joe Biden as the feckless lover... The only people making a better return on investment this fall than people who invested in Bitcoin are bookies taking NFL action...

Flotsam and Jetsam

 Miscellaneous thoughts and observations.

If you find yourself upset about the state of political discourse in this country just remember that 2-years ago at this time people were discussing whether President Trump's penis was shaped like mushroom or not - seriously!... AC/DC getting the band back together. New album soon to be released... Salvation a la Mode (and a Cup of Tea) would be a good name for a blog... The Kansas City Chiefs have averaged 30.3 points per game the first 3 games of the season. They would have to average 38.3 points per game for the rest of the season to match the Patriots record of 589 points in a season... Washington first responders among first to use Starlink in the field. They came away very impressed...

Linky Links

Stuff I found interesting or amusing and thought I'd share.

- US tech giants halt Hong Kong police help. The first step is acknowledging there's a problem. I'd prefer if there was a stronger word than "halt" though because that could mean the "help" could resume.

- Earth's magnetic field can shift 10 times faster than scientists previously believed. No mention in the article of why this could be so significant. Maybe UPI doesn't want to be cancelled by the "science is settled" zealots?

- Signaling vs certification at Harvard. Some interesting points in the comments. Makes me think of the Naval quote, "The best peers are on the Internet. The tools for learning are abundant. It's the desire to learn that's scarce."

- Dear Israel - keep up the good work!

- Tom Curran makes some good points about Pat Mahomes new contract with the Chiefs

- Heh Heh. A joke you either get or don't. If you don't get it be careful Googling the explanation.

Flotsam and Jetsam

Miscellaneous thoughts and observations.

In the next day or two I guarantee that you will see graphics showing the members of the Kansas City Chiefs who say they will not be going to the White House. I also guarantee that people will then come up with new graphics that add either Hillary Clinton or Elizabeth Warren to the people who will not be going to the White House... Heh Heh... "Choose the non-emotional response to any given situation and see how much easier your life becomes." - Excellent life advice from Naval Ravikant... Interesting long read from Outside - The FBI of the National Park Service. Kept thinking it could be called CSI: Yosemite instead...  Another read worth your time is Tim Ferriss' latest blog post 11 Reasons Not to Become Famous which could easily have been called "The Dark Side of Fame." Makes you think twice about wanting to be famous (though I have nothing against still wanting to be rich)...

AFC Championship Game

To the left is the cover of a 30-page special section of the Kansas City Star for tomorrow's AFC Championship game.

What are the people at the Star trying to say here? That Tom Brady is Thanos and his five Super Bowl rings are the five Infinity Stones? [Spoiler Alert!] Don't the people at the Star know that Thanos won? Are they saying Tom Brady is going to simply snap his fingers and make the Chiefs disappear?

Are they saying Patrick Mahomes is a woman? They know that Captain Marvel is a woman - right? NTTAWWT.

My hunch is the guy who did this artwork must be a Patriots fan. Troll level - awesome!

At least they didn't make any Endgame allusions. Because that's for the Super Bowl (which is of course the end game of the NFL season).

Do better KC Star. Do better!

Flotsam and Jetsam

Miscellaneous thoughts and observations.

It still bugs me that the Patriots last second loss in Miami cost them home-field advantage this Sunday against the Chiefs... Good news - science says that drinking coffee is good for your long term life expectancy... If Andy Kaufman were alive today I'm convinced that instead of Tony Clifton his alter-ego would be an equally obnoxious extreme SJW... Interesting - how does Netflix actually make money?... One aspect of the projected bone-chilling cold in Kansas City this Sunday is that it should negate much of the home-field advantage for the Chiefs. Tough to be loud when you are literally muffled in extra layers of clothes... I'll never look at Adam Gase the same again... Any Democrat who used Cindy Sheehan's grief over the death of her son for political purposes should be made to face and answer to the Angel Moms who have had a child murdered by an illegal immigrant...

Flotsam and Jetsam

Miscellaneous thoughts and observations.

I've long said that Condoleezza Rice would make an excellent NFL Commissioner (a big improvement on joke currently holding the office)... The Kansas City Chiefs last night (as played by Glenn Close)... One of the biggest political / football "what ifs" of history is if there was no World War II there was a good chance that Dwight Eisenhower would have been made the head football coach at West Point... An update on NASA's Mars InSight lander (which is due to land on the red planet next week)... I wonder if Jeff Fisher sat at home last night thinking to himself, "There's no way one of my defenses would give up that many points!"... True US history - in the early 1900's there was a prostitute in Chicago named Suzy Poon Tang. She was so good in bed that her name became slang for - well you know... "We live two lives. The second one begins when we realize we only have one life to live." - Steven Sotloff...

Flotsam and Jetsam

Miscellaneous thoughts and observations.

It is hard to believe that it has just been a little over 2 months since the Penn State Athletic Director was charged with perjury which was first domino in chain that led to Jerry Sandusky being arrested, Joe Paterno being fired and Bill O'Brien hired as Paterno's replacement as head football coach... Not to be racist but if you have fears that your penis is shrinking then you are probably Asian. If you suffer from anorexia - you are probably not from Africa. Culture bound syndromes... Congratulations to Romeo Crennel on being named head coach for the Kansas City Chiefs. When good things happen to good people... People wonder why Bill O'Brien left the Patriots to take the Penn State job but that is simple. O'Brien will be paid much more money than he was making and his contract is for 5-years. Does anyone think Tom Brady will still be the QB for the Patriots in 5-years?... The highest unemployment rate under George W Bush was 7.7% and he was crucified for it. President Obama has an unemployment rate of 8.5% (the real rate is 10.9% but that's another story) and he is getting praised for it?...  The two best teams in the NHL may be the Bruins and the Rangers. They are also the two teams that lead the NHL in fights. There is some correlation there...

Flotsam and Jetsam

Miscellaneous thoughts and observations.

I'm a little torn in my AFC West rooting now. I like how Tim Tebow drives some people crazy but I also want Romeo Crennel to succeed so he wins the head coaching job in Kansas City... Boston Celtics doctors can detect Jeff Green's thoracic aortic aneurysm but somehow they completely missed Delonte West and his mental illness... 19 Outstanding Words You Should Be Working Into Conversation... Right now Daisuke Matsuzaka has cost the Red Sox $1.9 million per win. By the end of 2012 John Lackey will have also cost the Red Sox $1.9 million per win... Phil Martelli was great in Young Frankenstein... Christopher Hitchens famously debunked the saying "Whatever doesn't kill you makes you stronger" in his last column but I have to wonder what he'd have to write about the saying "No pain no gain"?... Speaking of Hitch - I knew Christopher Hitchens better than you... I'm hoping Norv Turner comes out and says that if he had a team as talented as the Jets then he'd have a playoff spot tied up by now. And speaking of the Jets - I agree with the sentiment that if you switched the QB's from the Jets and Giants then the team with Eli Manning would win by 2 TD's... If the government sold its remaining GM stock today taxpayers would lose about $16.5 billion...Who knew? There are more McDonald's in the US then Wendy's, Burger Kings and White Castles combined... Most rational leaders gave thanks at the news of the death of Kim Jong Il but Jimmy Carter sends condolences. He is truly a craven person...

Todd Haley and the Kansas City Chiefs

Very enjoyable read by Jason Whitlock on why he feels Todd Haley is not a legit NFL coach.

Nicely done.

It also - without expressly saying it - greatly complements Bill Belichick who hasn't lost a step in the personnel department despite losing Scott Pioli. Look at some of the draft picks and free agents that are helping the Patriots this year and it is hard not to think that Belichick may not just be the best coach in the NFL but also the best GM.
