Some quotes I hope may resonate with you.

"Behind it all is surely an idea so simple, so beautiful, that when we grasp it - in a decade, a century, or a millennium - we will all say to each other, how could it have been otherwise?" - John Archibald Wheeler

Have Two Important Things Changed in America?

Interesting observation in Niall Ferguson's The Square and the Tower:

"The French social and political theorist Alexis de Tocqueville saw the vitality of American associational life, along with the decentralized nature of the federal system, as the keys to the success of the new democracy."

Ignoring for a moment that we're a republic and not a democracy - I'm left wondering if some of the problems we face today are because those two key aspects of American life have changed?

Americans are no longer "joiners" and associations and friends "in real life" seems to becoming a thing of the past. Spending so much time in the Metaverse seems an awful waste to me. "Bowling alone" is increasingly a problem.

So too is the fact that government in the US has become much more centralized than ever before. And more powerful. The government of 1918 wouldn't have had the power to lock down the nation like we recently did.

Are we losing two of the things that de Tocqueville saw that made us great? I worry we are trending in the wrong direction. I also worry we may not be able to get off the path we're on.

Obesity in America

Cultural Offering has an excellent post on why Americans are so fat. You should make time to go through the post and let the information sink in on how bad the American diet is. If you have kids - go through the post with them so they can learn how they are being manipulated and their health being put at risk.

Eat real food - eliminate anything that comes in a box or a package from your diet. Only drink things that occur in nature. Soda is perhaps one of the worst things you can put in your body. I've narrowed down the things I drink to pretty much water, coffee (black), tea, and beer (we've been drinking beer for thousands of years).

"A common mistake that people make when trying to design something completely foolproof is to underestimate the ingenuity of complete fools." - Douglas Adams

"The person who says he knows what he thinks but cannot express it usually does not know what he thinks." - Mortimer Adler

"Life is not a problem to be solved, but a reality to be experienced." - Soren Kierkegaard

Quotes for Today

Some quotes I hope may resonate with you.

"In a long-term game, it's positive sum. We're all baking the pie together. We're trying to make it as big as possible. And in a short term game, we're cutting up the pie." - Naval Ravikant

"He who buys what he doesn't need steals from himself." - Swedish Proverb

"If you're good at something, never do it for free." - The Joker

"I believe we're on the edge of about 800 more years of American centuries. The biggest problem is all the people who see a problem. It's very fashionable to think the end is near." - Tom Wolfe

Quotes for Today

Some quotes I hope may resonate with you.

"It is a most wonderful comfort to sit alone beneath a lamp, book spread before you, and commune with someone from the past whom you have never met." - Yoshida Kenko

"Censorship is telling a man he can't have steak just because a baby can't chew it." - Mark Twain

"Liberty is the parent of science and of virtue, and a nation will be great in both in proportion as it is free." - Thomas Jefferson

Flotsam and Jetsam

Miscellaneous thoughts and observations.

America's sustained competitive advantage stems from our vast natural resources and our freedoms. Of the two our freedoms are by far the most important and irreplaceable. And we are chipping away at the bedrock of our freedoms - sometimes it seems with sledgehammers... No need to call me Lord... Peter Gabriel's first choice for the female lead on the song Don't Give Up wasn't Kate Bush - it was Dolly Parton! Just another example of how legendary Dolly is... Sadly this is true!... Time to dust off my Ben Ben Theory. I have a theory that if you substituted Ben Stiller for Ben Affleck and vice versa in any of their movies - the movie would automatically become much more interesting to watch... You may be cool but you'll never be as cool as Debbie Harry lounging in her New York apartment under an Andy Warhol portrait of herself...

Flotsam and Jetsam

Miscellaneous thoughts and observations.

America's sustained competitive advantage stems from our vast natural resources and our freedoms. Of the two our freedoms are by far the most important and irreplaceable. Just look at Hong Kong to see the truth of this... "Everything is changing. People are taking their comedians seriously and their politicians as a joke." - Will Rogers... No dirty hippies, NO WIRE HANGERS, and a splash of vodka on everything... I would love it if MLB started referring to left-handed pitchers as "left-wingers" and right-handed pitchers as "right-wingers" just to mess with people... Santa's super powers vs those of other super heroes... Prior to the second day of the Battle of Stirling the Scots knelt and prayed. King Edward II saw this and assumed the Scots were praying for mercy from the English. He was mistaken. The Scots were praying to beg forgiveness from God for what they were about to do to the English... Periodic reminder to Steelers fans - your team lost playoff games to both Blake Bortles and Tim Tebow...

I Need You - America

Such a simple yet beautiful song you really don't hear much anymore.

Flotsam and Jetsam

Miscellaneous thoughts and observations.

At the time the final play of the Miami/Pats game was very, very disappointing because of my rooting (and not insubstantial monetary) interests but I must say the sense of elation and joy of the Dolphins fans really was something to see and experience... So crazy it just might work... This win over the Patriots was really the Super Bowl equivalent for Dolphins fans. The high point of their season and a highlight for them that will be cherished the way the Flutie miracle in Miami pass was for BC fans... Drinking with quiet determination is often the best form of drinking... America's sustained competitive advantage stems from our vast natural resources and our freedoms. Of the two our freedoms are by far the most important and irreplaceable... Heh heh... The way I view Sunday's loss to the Dolphins is it was an early gift from the Patriots. Merry Christmas Miami...

Flotsam and Jetsam

Miscellaneous thoughts and observations.

As we enter the Christmas season a gentle reminder - if you play The Christmas Shoes on the jukebox I should be allowed to throw darts at you. No exceptions!... In America the government DOES NOT exist to make us equal but to treat us equally. Any government agency or policy that treats citizens unequally is un-American... Muscular Church would be a good name for a Christian rock band... Heh heh - awesome!... "Coming of Age" stories are a little too spot on if you just reverse the order of those three words... Also as a reminder as we enter the Christmas season - we don't say the word "Hark!" enough these days. Who wouldn't like hearing someone calling attention to something important by exclaiming "Hark!" Or maybe it's just me...
