Flotsam and Jetsam

Miscellaneous thoughts and observations.

In the next 12 months this is a real possibility - President Donald Trump wins a Nobel Prize for bringing peace to Korea and the White House Correspondents Dinner ceases to be out of shame... I agree - they should also stop calling it the Nerd Prom. How many discussions on quantum biology or arguments on Gandalf and the eagles do you think were happening at those tables?... Wait - seriously? James Comey's brother Peter works for the Clinton Foundation's law firm DLA Piper? Talk about a conflict of interest... Heh heh - funny because it's true... After hiring Michele Wolf the White House correspondents really don't have any high ground to proclaim that Trump is lowering the level of political discourse in this country...  David Pastrnak is flat out good at hockey... Just saying but the motto of the Green Berets is "the Quiet Professionals". How many White House correspondents do you think could be described as "quiet professionals"? Also how many White House correspondents do you think served in the military? If any are able to check both boxes - what is the likelihood they wasted their time attending "Nerd Prom"?

Driverless Cars

Attacks on driverless cars is going to be a big issue in the very near future. For example I can see throwing snowballs at driverless cars becoming a big thing in the Northeast by bored or mischievous kids. Growing up we used to throw snowballs at buses because we knew the driver was prohibited from stopping (plus buses were a BIG target). Driverless cars will be similarly targeted.

I can also see scam artists waiting in crosswalks till the last moment to try and purposely get hit by driverless cars in the hopes of a big payday. Lots of ways to mess with driverless cars will be invented with very little sympathy for the autonomous victims.

And have we stopped saying autonomous vehicles and are now referring to driverless cars? How about "sedan drones"?

Flotsam and Jetsam

Miscellaneous thoughts and observations.

Like many Patriots fans I hoped the team would use either the 23rd or 31st pick on QB Lamar Jackson. However, as I am not qualified to be an NFL GM and New England has enjoyed a small amount of success over the years - I will trust that Bill Belichick knows what he's doing... Staring at boobs is one of six easy ways for men to live longer. Yay! Boobs! (Although I think number three on the list can just as easily lead to an early death for men)... Heh heh... Congrats to Red Sox great Kevin Youkilis on going back to college to get his degree... Seven reasons Donald Trump should pardon Martha Stewart. Would love to see this happen... I would really like to see a KFC commercial with Jeff Goldblum as the Colonel... Black women were more likely to be married than white women until 1970. That's when they started voting for the Democrats. Just saying...

3. My Hero, Zero
4. No More Kings
5. Lolly, Lolly, Lolly, Get Your Adverbs Here

Flotsam and Jetsam

Miscellaneous thoughts and observations.

After seeing those Dominoes pizza insurance commercials I've come to the conclusion that I'm too smart and coordinated to buy their pizza. However, your self-esteem may allow you make a purchase... Snow in space? Would also be a good name for an intergalactic cocaine smuggling thriller... Just a reminder - Barack Obama did not attend Nancy Reagan's funeral. Given the bad blood between the Bush family and Donald Trump - I think the situation at Barbara's funeral was handled properly... People are calling this taunting? If so this has to be the most polite taunting in NBA history. Watch Duke home games to see proper taunting... US oil floods Europe hurting Russia and OPEC offerings. Was this what Trump meant when he said trade wars are good and easy to win?... Vanderbilt University and every college in Nashville should step up and offer James Shaw Jr's daughter a full-boat scholarship to thank him on behalf of the entire Nashville community for his heroics at the Waffle House. It's the least that should be done for the man...  On this day in 1915 the Armenian genocide was begun. How is it possible that the international community (including the US to our shame) still does not officially recognize that this happened?...

- 14 States hit record low unemployment. I have to wonder if this is due in part to the way unemployment is measured being changed under the Obama Administration. They tried to make the numbers not look so bad but now is that why they look so good?

Scooter Libby

President Trump recently quietly (or you'd assume quietly based upon the lack of media coverage this story got) pardoned Scooter Libby. Many people who recognize the name Scooter Libby think he's the guy who leaked the name of CIA employee Valerie Plame. Except that wasn't Libby. That was first Richard Armitage and then Ari Fleisher.

Nothing happened to Armitage. Nothing. He was the reason there was a Special Counsel in the first place but even when the truth was proven nothing happened to Armitage. And Fleisher? That rat got immunity. But Libby faced charges because his recollection of events was different than Tim Russert's. And the other witness against Libby later recanted her testimony. He was railroaded pure and simple.

So was Trump sending a political message with this pardon? Yes absolutely. But he also was pointing how badly Libby was treated and this pardon helps rectify that wrong.

And let's not forget that Valerie Plame is a vile anti-Semite.

In God We Trust

On this date in 1864 the U.S. Congress passed the Coinage Act which mandated that the inscription "In God We Trust" be placed on all coins minted as US currency. Part of the reasoning behind this was because the US Constitution does not talk about God while the Confederate constitution did. This was a measure in part to show that the Union wanted God on their side in the Civil War.

Lust for Life - Iggy Pop

Happy birthday to Iggy Pop who turned 71-years old today.

Flotsam and Jetsam

Miscellaneous thoughts and observations.

If President Trump replaces Mike Pence on the 2020 ticket with Nikki Haley he would almost all but guarantee re-election... Complaining is not a strategy... The hospital in the Harry Potter books was called Saint Mungo's. Did you know there was an actual Saint Mungo? He's the patron saint of Glasgow, Scotland... Never thought about it this way... A life without meaning is like a foot without a big toe. And Tom Brady is always going to be here to be that big toe for us. I think we owe a big round of applause for our newest, bestest buddy and big toe - Tom Brady... An oldie but still makes me chuckle... One Jackie Robinson nugget to keep in the back of your head - when Jackie Robinson was first on the Hall of  Fame ballot 22% of the BBWAA did not vote for him...

The Golfing Nun

A nun walks into Mother Superior's office and plunks down into a chair. She lets out a sigh heavy with frustration. "What troubles you, Sister?" asks the Mother Superior. "I thought this was the day you spent with your family."

"It was," sighed the Sister. "And I went to play golf with my brother. We try to play golf as often as we can. You know I was quite a talented golfer before I devoted my life to Christ."

"I seem to recall that," the Mother Superior agreed. "So I take it your day of recreation was not relaxing?"

"Far from it," snorted the Sister. "In fact, I even took the Lord's name in vain today!"

"Goodness, Sister!" gasped the Mother Superior, astonished. "You must tell me all about it!"

"Well, we were on the fifth tee...and this hole is a monster, Mother - 540 yard Par 5, with a nasty dogleg left and a hidden green...and I hit the drive of my life. I creamed it. The sweetest swing I ever made. And it's flying straight and true, right along the line I wanted...and it hits a bird in mid-flight not 100 yards off the tee!"

"Oh my!" commiserated the Mother. "How unfortunate! But surely that didn't make you blaspheme, Sister!"

"No, that wasn't it," admitted Sister "While I was still trying to fathom what had happened, when this squirrel runs out of the woods, grabs my ball and runs off down the fairway!"

"Oh, that would have made me blaspheme!" sympathized Mother.

"But I didn't, Mother Superior!" sobbed the Sister. "And I was so proud of myself! And while I was pondering whether this was a sign from God, this hawk swoops out of the sky and grabs the squirrel and flies off, with my ball still clutched in his paws!"

"So that's when you cursed," said the Mother with a knowing smile.

"Nope, that wasn't it either," cried the Sister, anguished, "because as the hawk started to fly out of sight, the squirrel started struggling, and the hawk dropped him right there on the green, and the ball popped out of his paws and rolled to about 18 inches from the cup!"

Mother Superior sat back in her chair, folded her arms across her chest, fixed the Sister with a baleful stare and said...

"You missed the fucking putt, didn't you?"

An old joke but a good one.

Donald Trump the Killer Rabbit

It occurred to me that perhaps a good metaphor for Donald Trump is Monty Python's Killer Rabbit. Prior to the election the left wasn't afraid of Trump at all. What was he going to do to the Hillary jugernaut - nibble her bum?

Then he won the election. Then he put Gorsuch on the Supreme Court, then he passed a wildly popular tax cut and now he may be about to bring peace to Korea. Now the Democrats are all "Run away! Run away!"

They hope each new manufactured scandal will be their Holy Hand-grenade of Antioch. James Comey - nope. Stormy Daniels - nope. The Mueller investigation - maybe but then again that one is just as likely to explode in their hands.

And the great wizard who some call Tim? That's Dilbert creator Scott Adams in this metaphor. He's the only one who saw the real power of the killer rabbit Donald Trump.

Barbara Bush

That cartoon brought a tear to my eye.

This thread also helped exemplify the type of person Barbara Bush was.

RIP

Andre the Giant

Watched the HBO documentary Andre the Giant and I give it two big thumbs up! If you were a WWF fan in the 1980's you knew Andre was the man. If you are a fan of the movie The Princess Bride you got a glimpse of the gentle spirit behind the "brute squad".

If you don't want to take my word for it - the documentary also has a 93% score on Rotten Tomatoes.

Flotsam and Jetsam

Miscellaneous thoughts and observations.

When did playoff beards go out of fashion in the NHL? How is the average fan to tell which team wants it more now?... Advice on how to get the best Rx prices... Prediction sometime in the near future the punchline from that famous joke is going to be changed from  "the Aristocrats!" to "Florida!"...  Why hasn't Taylor Swift commented yet on the James Comey book? What is she hiding?... 12 bad decisions you make every day without realizing... "Beware the IoT (Internet of Things)" is bound to become the modern equivalent to the ancient saying "Beware Greeks bearing gifts"... Starting to get the feeling that if Hillary Clinton was a Game of Thrones character she'd be Littlefinger who was eventually undone by just too much scheming and formerly naive characters finally waking up to his true character...

Barbara Bush

George and Barbara Bush's wedding photo in 1945.

- Statement from President George W Bush on the passing of his mother.

- Statement from President and Mrs. Obama on the passing of Barbara Bush.

- A reminder on the type of person Barbara Bush was.

- General Chuck Yeager has a couple of anecdotes on how fine a person and how down to earth Barbara Bush was.

- Five years ago George HW Bush shaved his head in support of the son of a secret service agent. It should be remembered that George and Barbara lost their first daughter Robin to childhood leukemia. Now after 73-years of marriage George has lost the love of his life. Reportedly he was holding her hand as she passed.

My prayers are with George HW Bush and the rest of the Bush family.

Harry Anderson

Magician Harry Anderson has passed away at age 65. I say "magician" and not "actor" because to me Harry Anderson was first and foremost a magician.

Anderson started off as a street magician in San Francisco but I first saw him doing his magic on the original Saturday Night Live. (That was way back when they had magicians like Anderson and Penn & Teller on the show.)

Then came Anderson's occasional appearances on Cheers as Harry "the Hat" a con-man who was at heart still a fast-talking street performer. Then came Night Court where he played the affable Harry T. Stone. Night Court remains an under-appreciated sitcom but I think much of its success was from people thinking that Anderson was basically playing himself. He was that likable.

Anderson had other acting roles but for the last decade he's been basically out of "the business". The joy he brought to people in the 1970's and 80's would be tough to match by any performer from that time. 65 was way too young. He will be missed.

The New Patriots Day

April 16th really should be a holiday in the New England states. The date is both the anniversary of Tom Brady being drafted by the Patriots in the 6th round of the 2000 NFL draft and Bill Belichick's birthday (today's his 66th). Easily could be a holiday.

Problem is Patriots' Day is already a holiday in Massachusetts which is celebrated since 1969 on the third Monday in April. The holiday is supposed to celebrate the anniversary of the Battles of Lexington and Concord but that anniversary is technically the 19th of April. Locally this holiday is more known as Marathon Monday as it is the day the Boston Marathon is run (and the Red Sox play a morning game at Fenway).

There should be a way to incorporate Brady and Belichick especially since every once and a while (like today) the existing holiday will fall on the 16th anyway.

Flotsam and Jetsam

Miscellaneous thoughts and observations.

I keep waiting for some MSM reporter to explain where the chemical weapons in Syria came from in the first place. I bet much of the stockpiles came from Saddam but reporting that would ruin the idea that there were never any WMD's in Iraq... Hopefully the Zuckerberg hearings in Europe will be broadcast in the US... Could dark matter simply be the leftover quantum entanglement from the matter and antimatter that was annihilated just after the Big Bang?... Elon Musk might end up being President Trump's biggest supporter if Trump can get Musk a manufacturing plant in China without giving up ownership and if Trump can get the NTSB off Tesla's back... "Tiger" running amok in Manhattan was actually a raccoon.  And the existential threat to the fabric of Western Civilization was actually just a Chick Fil-A franchise... Historically - which rock band was more dysfunctional The Kinks or The Ramones?...  The truth in advertising back cover to James Comey's new book...

Tom Brady

Tom Brady visited the troops at the Al Udeid air force base in Qatar. A couple of observations:

- I'm glad he took his son so that he can see firsthand the respect his famous QB dad gives to the servicemen and women in uniform.
- If you look closely at the picture in the article - it looks like the three female service members are taking their own selfie. I just hope there was one they could all agree on was acceptable
- Brady also took time out for individual photos.
- And supposedly he even had time to autograph a bomb that was later dropped on Syria.

How can you not like Tom Brady?

People Who Died - Jim Carroll

Thinking of Dolores O'Riordan this morning got me thinking of this song.

My brain works differently than most.

Flotsam and Jetsam

Miscellaneous thoughts and observations.

Serious question - who had a better NBA season Gordon Haywood or Jae Crowder?  I mean at least people think Haywood is still a starting player in the league... Cool - man who escaped Alcatraz writes letter to the FBI telling them he's still alive... Before coffee this morning I started thinking about the death of Cranberries lead singer Dolores O' Riordan. It's been almost 3 months since her death. Cherish life and live in the moment... I was amused by this stat. I was amused because I immediately wondered if those numbers are giving credit for the explosion in polar bear population to Al Gore somehow. I mean do those numbers also include the half bear-half Gore ones too. Even briefly thought about writing a screenplay Al Gore - The Man Who Slept with Polar Bears (my mind works differently than most)... Heh heh - it's funny because its true... I get a kick out of Brad Marchand. He's like the reincarnation of the great John L. Sullivan "I can lick any sonofabitch in the house!"...  They still haven't announced O'Riordan's cause of death...

Flotsam and Jetsam

Miscellaneous thoughts and observations.

Not to take anything away from Marcus Mariota because he seems like a sincerely good guy but Tom Brady has been supporting both the Special Olympics and the Best Buddies charity for years with little or no fanfare... Cult of Inhibitions - band name or all-inclusive singles resort?... This is fantastic...  Yesterday was the anniversary of Robert E. Lee surrendering to Ulysses S. Grant at Appomattox in 1865.  One of the most important dates in US history goes by with little or no mention and we wonder why kids today seem so uninformed...  My whole childhood is a lie... The Barkley Marathons

If you are looking for a good documentary - check out The Barkley Marathons: The Race That Eats Its Young

The people who run this definitely have a different mindset. I can't comprehend having that mindset where a simple marathon simply isn't challenging enough. Don't get me wrong - I'd love to try to make a single loop of the Barkley even welcoming the "stigma" of being runner number 1 (the human sacrifice) but I'd hate taking up one of the 40 slots for the race.

What got me thinking of the Barkley was this article in Outside Magazine on The Women of the Barkley Marathons.

Good article - good documentary - both well worth your time.

Walmart's Robot Bees

Walmart has filed a patent on robot, autonomous bees. These robot bees can be used to autonomously pollinate flowers just like real bees. At least that's the public explanation being rolled out by Walmart's public relations people of why the bees are being developed.

Conspiracy theorists probably believe the real reason is this is the first step in the Mega-Corporation Robot Wars. These robot bees would be just the right tool to randomly disable Amazon delivery drones. Just a couple robot bees "accidentally" sacrificing themselves into the rotor blades of the Amazon drones will be just enough to put a black mark on Amazon's delivery record.

Just the first step.

Random Business Ideas

Here's two random business ideas to start off your day. I can't claim that these ideas are uniquely my own - so if you wanted to invest your time and energy into perusing either - have at it!

First - fake Medic Alert bracelets that say "If found unconscious please administer oral sex." Would make great joke gifts or gifts for Lotharios who believe in buying girls who smoke cigarettes drinks (idea being if they put a cigarette in their mouths - they'll put anything in their mouth). Could be a big selling items at nursing homes (for men and women).

Speaking of nursing homes - second idea is a competitor to Amazon's Alexa marketed toward the elderly. The product shall be called Rhonda. "Help! Help me Rhonda (I've fallen and I can't get back up)."

Enjoy!

Flotsam and Jetsam

Miscellaneous thoughts and observations.

An update on super-gambler Billy Walters (currently behind bars). I don't feel bad for Walters but I do come away with less respect for Phil Michelson... Not sure if this is true but I heard the only college willing to admit David Hogg was Trump University... If I recall my comic books correctly - Super Gonorrhea is teenage Spider-Man's biggest nemesis... If I were a pitching coach every time I left the mound I'd turn back and shout "and candlesticks always make a nice gift"... Interesting - could using blockchain end movie piracy? This could also revolutionize the way music is purchased and shared... How much do I love the Boston Bruins? Nutrocker by Emerson, Lake and Palmer was my wedding song (old-time Channel 38 Bruins fans will understand)... Cool...
